Good question! This is one I recently mulled over long and hard and I came to the following conclusion. Now, I've personally never used the articles - but - this is what happens to make sense to me.

1) I have seen sites that use RSS feeds of EzineArticles. So if someone wants to run an AdSense portal site with content on VoIP - they include an RSS feed from the VoIP category of EzineArticles with their own AdSense ad's on their site. Now they have fresh updated content at no cost to them. This probably won't get you too much traffic - BUT by submitting your article to EzineArticles - now you have EzineArticles linking to you, as well as a few other sites that use the EzineArticles RSS feeds on their site.

2)I've used a few articles from EzineArticles to build Squidoo lenses. Put up a couple articles with good content in your niche, and then put your affiliate links in another module. It's a quick way to build lenses and it's another example of using posted articles.

3)People may not be using submitted articles on their blogs or on their sites BUT they may be using them in their newsletters. The goal of a newsletter is to provide quality advice in the same niche. As long as the link in the resource box does not conflict with their interests then it can not hurt to include an article from an article directory. This means if you are providing great, high quality information to a niche and linking to something like your blog on a product - not directly to an affiliate program - people just might be tempted to send out your article to their list.
