There are numerous accounts of successful people who only sleeps about 3-4 hours. I sleep about 6-7 hours.. and hopefully would strech myself to 3-4 hours by the end of the year.

  • Hey, before you start making money, first you need to take care of your health. Nothing is important than your health. It is not good to have little time to sleep. Human should have 6-7hours of sleep so that you can be very productive in day time. Think about it again. You can earn money at any time but you can't really have a healthy body back if you didn't take care of it at the beginning.

    • Well, I agree! Maybe I can survive with 3 hours sleep only on the first day. On the second day, I need to sleep longer or else I won't function properly. I would say sleep is very important.

    • I totally agree with hazyl lee. Nothing is more important than the health of our body. At the end of the day, work will remain work and we never run out of work but our body will always find itself worn out and needs some rest.

    • OMG, I don't see sleep like that. I value sleep very much and never think sleeping "waste any minute" of my life. In fact, I find that I'm less efficient when I don't get enough sleep. I'm also very touchy and unable to concentrate. In short, my life is not so good when I don't get enough sleep.

      That's why one of the things I really hate is people messing up with my sleep like when calling while I'm catching my Zs and playing music, even if it's not that loud, but still audible.

      Like Oddah said it's about finding what's right for you. IMHO, having a few hours of sleep so you have more time to work shouldn't be considered a contribution to success.
    • I believe that you can train your body to sleep less instead of what they said, 7-8 hours. There was also finding that previously, people didn't really sleep 7-8 hours straight. They slept 4 hours, woke up, did some work (even visited friends at 2 or 3 am) and then went back to sleep.

      I tried to sleep only 3-4 hours a day... so far I sleep around 1 or 2 am and wake up at 6 am... then in the afternoon I take a one hour nap. It kinda works for me.

    I am bi polar i can go long periods of time with only 3-4 hours of sleep a night .. and then crash for a few days .. but i am never able to sleep more than 8.. well thats a lie when i tried meds .. i couldn't get enough sleep ..

    honestly when you find your rythym and what you are ment to do you won't need as much sleep .. but if your body needs rest always rest enough ..

    are they successfull because they only sleep 4 hours a night ... or because they get so much energy from what they do .. they just don't need as much sleep

      Seriously though, I personally wouldn't want to try and emulate any of those people because everyone should know what they need for their optimal performance and it just so happens that 3 or 4 hours of sleep isn't mine.

      And besides, not enough sleep can lead to weight gain and cause the body's natural healing process to fail.

  • most of the time my brain doesn't even fully turn on until 9 or 10 pm a night ..no matter what i do i can't stop this from happening.. so it is only recently that i have began to look for a way to benifit from instead of fight it
  • If you don't sleep because of work, you are stressed, even if you don't realize it and after some time you'll get a burnout.. that's normal, being stressed and forgetting everything around you - even your health, and than all of a sudden, it will hit you...

  • Well, I don't think I would survive that short hours of sleep. Rest is very important to me in order to be more productive in the next day. But if sometimes over time will be necessary, I wouldn't mind sleeping 3hrs but for the whole week with that kind of sleeping hours. I doubt I survive that.

    It's your choice if you want to be a slave to getting more money .. but if your makeing enough money to live and you just don't need more than 4 hours sleep ..enjoy

    • The answer to that question would maybe be twofold. 'Success' by its term is subjective and people can spend time differently, perhaps more wisely than the person who spends more time doing less of the same thing.

      ....like styling their hair for instance, which may, in the eyes of some, be a 'success' in some cases.

    • But for every successful person who is on your list of quotes of minimal sleepers, there may be hundreds of others who sleep a "normal" amount.

      Besides, it's not at all clear if it's even possible to "train" your body to need less sleep (beyond just living a healthy lifestyle). Some people just don't require as much sleep as others.
  • actually i think the quote should just be .. how does one sleep 12-14 hours a day .....and if that is a priority for you .. you only really need enough to buy an extremly comfortable bed ..

    then again .. he might have un knowingly been refering to hugh hefner ..and i'd stay in bed 12 hours a day if i had and endless supply of playboy bunnies ..

    • @Aaron : I sleep about 8-10 hrs which I think is a ridiculous waste of time. I could easily accomplish more with atleast an added 3 hours i.e. 100 hrs extra a month!!
  • In time of need, I actually can. But I don't prefer it. I am more productive with at least 6 hours of sleep.

  • Personally, I don't now how great would be for me only 3 hours of sleep and how efficient I would be. However, there are people who are doing polyphasic sleep and sleeping only 2 hours daily, by autodiscipline (they sleep 20 minutes at a few hours distance and this routine has to be strictly followed) and educating their bodies.
  • I prefer 8-9 hours of sleep, sometimes more, sometimes less.

    The key is to make your life so interesting that you'd rather be awake than sleep. Thats what happens when you live a life doing interesting stuff and work you love.

    • I remeber an old quote, a relative once said to me- he never seemed to sleep and I asked him about it. He said "I'll sleep forever when I am dead". Unfortunetly he had short life-perhaps from lack of sleep.
      I worked my way through college and after 5+ years with still 1.5 years to go I got frustrated-I took a full time job in a food processing plant- the hours where 7pm to 7am 3 days a week and 7pm to 1am for the 4th day then 3.5 days off.
      I went to school full time while I did this crazy schedule. I would get home at 8 am go to classes until about 1:30pm get to sleep by 2pm be at work zonked on coffee by 7pm. The shift swirled around a rotating schedule: Some weekends off others on. The off weekends while my friends went to parties I slept.
      I lived for several years on this schedule and to this day I can function OK on a few hours of sleep. BUT after a fewweeks I need a good solid 10 hours to recharge and rejuvenate. However most of my average sleep is 5 to 7 hours per night. We are all wired differently when it comes to sleep, my wife needs 9 to 10 hours every night. For her it is early to bed early to rise!

  • i have experienced moments in my life wherein i get soo much excited that i forget to get tired... these occur for days. perhaps that's just it. if you 1.) enjoy working so much that you are actually 2.) less stressed and 3.) your body is less likely to get tired.

    perhaps a 15 min power nap is enough.

    unfortunately, i had that experience while playing civilization 4.

  • In my opinion, it really depends with how you actually define success.

    If what success means to you is having a lot of money, I don't think you have to lessen your sleeping hours permanently for this. You just have to find ways how you can manage your time more efficiently and not micromanage everything.

    If you are passionate about your work though, and its not just about the money, then I can totally understand why you would want to lessen your sleeping hours.

    That's just my opinion though.
  • I actually only got 3 hours of sleep last night and I thought it was interesting seeing a thread relating to it. So from my perspective, I currently have a huge headache and can't keep my eyes open that long. To be honest I have stayed up for over 72 hours with probably only 2 hours of sleep maximum during those three nights and it was not fun at all. Surprisingly I was stil able to function.

    Although I did survive with 3 hours of sleep, I will not do that again. It hurts my health and my health is pretty much whats keeping me alive.
  • I have also seen some antedotal cases of highly successful people who sleep the more common 7 to 8 hours, so to say "ALL successful people" sleep very littel is definitely incorrect.

    Everyone has there own needs. The quality of the sleep may make a big difference. All sleep is not created equal!
  • I do not believe that one requires less sleep to be successful. I do believe that Most Successful people do sleep less that those of us that have 8 to 5 jobs or Blue Collar workers. I do think that Most of these successful folks do have an Energy about them and a mindset that does have less stress because of the enjoyment of the work they do. The mindset of these people is such that ideas and thoughts race through their mind in such a way that sleep is just another way for their mind to solve and create more solutions for the ideas they have thought of during the day.

    • This is a great thread. One of my favorite examples of a modern person who sleeps only 2-3 hours is Sri Chinmoy. He died recently, unfortunately. But as a spiritual teacher, he's famous for his achievements, which include writing over 17,000 songs, over 50,000 poems, and performing over 700 concerts.

      As far as I understand he meditated a few hours every day, however. A good read for anyone interested in this topic is the 4 Hour Body and combined with the Wakeup Productive program by Eben Pagan I've learnt that our body has cycles - "Ultradian rhythms" as its referred to.

      A big part of increasing my productivity these days is being attuned to the ups and downs of this cycle, resting when necessary, and staying awake at the cycle's apex. It's an interesting concept to research further for anyone who's interested in this area of their life.

  • The reason I think that someone with 8 hours of sleep as opposed to 3 hours of sleep may be more successful

    is because a rested mind is more powerful and active than a dull mind living on minimal sleep..

    Without sleep, you won't be able to think straight, you'll make bad decisions, you won't be on the top of your game.

    You can sleep 3 hours, and work 21 hours.. feeling horrible the entire time,

    or you can sleep 8 hours, eat healthy meals that fuel your energy, go out for a jog, and be in top mental health so you can do the work you would have done in 21 hours, in under 8 hours.. while being happy and healthy.

    Never sacrifice health for work.

    Maybe not all smart people have surpassed hard working people, but the smart healthy and happy people who do surpass the hard working people, usually end up MUCH richer and happier.

      Our health is more important than making money... to me and to my wife.

      Is making money important? Hell Yes! As long as it make you (and you family) happy and you make enough to live comfortable, to share, and to spare.

      We are a very successful people and get whatever sleep we require at any given moment... 7 to 10 hours; even 12 if we need it.

    • I think that the amount of sleep needed also correlates with your lifestyle. People who have physical jobs will need more sleep. Also I know a lot of the low sleep people quoted also eat very healthy and some are vegetarians. Also avoiding caffeine, alcohol, tobacco etc... are all traits of successful people.
  • I think the issue is time management. You need to be able to do what you need to effectively. There have been studies that show that mental aptitude decreases with less sleep (short-term and long-term). 8 hours is the recommended, so I would say anything less than 6 hours is pushing it.

    Remember there is a reason us humans need to sleep. Our eyes (that we view the computer screen/s on), our hands (that we type with) and brains (that we strategize with) all need relaxation to function properly.

    My reply was simple - "As long as it needs to be to say what it needs to say".

    The same principles apply for sleep - we need what we need, and for those people who think they can increase productivity by aiming to "sleep less" I say, 'Oh fool you!'

    If you want to know how much you personally SHOULD sleep then live a month without your alarm. Go to bed early and get up when you wake up - and I'm not talking about rolling over for a few more 3 or 4 times either.

    When I'm working on an exciting project I"l often only sleep 6 hrs or so. But once or twice a month I DON'T sleep of a night, and maybe catch and hour or three during the say. These are times when inspiration hits me and I can't stop writing.

    But then other times, between projects I'll often average 8 - 9 hours. It all depends on how active my mind is and what needs to be done.

    But the thing is, I don't use my alarm anymore except for those rare times when I MUST be up at a certain time to be at a certain place... just in case I'm not already awake.

  • I liked this thread. Sleeping hours is a topic which can be discussed on and on without a concrete solution. One simple logic is that we need to sleep for rest. However, at the same breadth I am sure that in most of the cases it's about mind. If you are mentally tired, then you can't work. If you are a regular mediator or you are regular performing yoga asanas, then you would be active through the day. Personally speaking I don't think body needs more than couple of hours of sleep. During my exams I used to end up sleeping only 2 hrs daily, and this would continue for over a month. This habit had least impact on me physically. It's all mind game. If we are mentally sound, then we would need lesser sleep.

    The question is "Can you survive in 3 hours sleep?" Well, to answer that directly, I think it's based on the health/physical condition of the person.

    With regard to relating this topic to one's success in IM or in any business, I think we still can't say that to be successful, you'll have to sleep 3 to 4 hours a day and follow the sleeping patterns of those successful people who were/are sleeping for 3 to 4 hours a day. It's all dependent on the person's health/physical condition. If your body can do it, then try it.

  • Apparently I DO have the entrepreneurial mindset! I too "hate sleep" I tell people it all the time, I say that I think sleep is a waste of time, and there are more productive things that can be done.

    That being said, I have been sleeping too much and my sleep schedule is all wake lately. Think its stress. I am not sure if I could function on 3 hrs of sleep for long, but I still have the same thoughts about sleep.

    The answer is yes.... but you will definitely shorten your lifespan. I'm not sure by how much, but there have been medical studies about this.

    Well, i suppose it's worth it if you live your short life with fame and fortune.

      Why are you getting 3 hours of sleep? Is it because you're engaged in something mentally stimulating like creating, learning and discovering?

      Or Is it because of something negative like worry, drugs, stress,etc.

    • The answer is "no", you can't. You can survive and function on 3 hours of sleep for only a very, very brief span, and even when that span is over with you will crash for longer than the average of 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night.

      Sleep is not a luxury, it is vitally necessary to your brain's health and your vascular system's healthy functioning. Lack of sleep is directly linked to weight problems, heart disease, eating disorders, and a vast array of emotional disorders. The lack of focus that will come with little sleep should be self-evident. No amount of money can make up for insomnia, be it voluntarily imposed on oneself or a medical disorder.

      The research about those who only sleep three or four hours per night doesn't tell you that these same people "power nap" all the damn time.

      I could go on and on, but the bottom line is: get your sleep, and make your work time in your waking life Quality Time. Multi-millionaires and those with billions of dollars don't skimp on sleep. They get plenty of it. What they do differently than you is: they spend most of their waking hours engaged in activities that can make money. They love and enjoy these activities. Make your vocation your vacation.

      Went to bed late and got up early. Reigned as Prime Minister for 11 years, longest serving and lived to 87. Not bad. Richard Branson does the same.
      Must be some connection to successful people and only requiring minimum sleep.

      My Uncle used to get 2-3 hours sleep and passed away at the age of 45. Ideally due to our hectic lifestyles, you need 7-8 hours sleep. I already get 9 hours of solid sleep and if this Internet Business works out, I plan to add another 2 hours of sleep ( siesta) during the day.

    • Brute77, I think we're so caught up in the 4-hour work week view of productivity that we're measuring sleep's value by time only.

      Many have already said their optimal hours of sleep depend on genetics, age, and oxygen to the brain--all excellent points. Optimal sleep hours also vary because some sleep deeply while others toss and turn with worry or sleep apnea.

      =>I see sleep as another natural asset to develop and use in different ways. It's a perfect time for reclaiming intuition and creativity.

      My late sister Sue was a musical genius with strongly developed logical thinking skills as well as the right-brained creativity. Still, she often fretted over problems involving a production, concert, or composition.

      Just before Sue went to sleep, she would pose her questions and put in her resolution order just like a take-out pizza! By halfway through the next day, the solution would just come to her out of the blue.

      I've never understood why we spend more time and money maintaining our cars and mobile phones than we spend on our most valuable resource--our brains. With a little help, our brain could become something like that elusive Easy Button. So what do we feed it? Saturated fat, sugar, petty conflict, secret addictions, and 24/7 TV crime show reruns.

    Why sleep is important and what happens when you don't get enough

    My personal opinion means nothing in this regard. I personally can function on diminished amounts of sleep for short periods of time. The risks are too great however to continue on reduced sleep, say in the range of 3-4 hours every single night, as our bodies are mainly adapted and built for between 6-8 hours of sleep, optimally.

    Now, as others have stated, this varies from person to person, but you cannot escape the important stages, especially of REM sleep. When one person is deprived of deep sleep for too long, during times of wakefulness, he or she will occasionally fall into micro sleeps (5-10 seconds) that cause lapses in attention, nod off while doing an activity like driving or reading and then finally experience hypnagogic hallucinations, the beginning of REM sleep. Dangerous and uncool.

    As to the OP's original question of folks surviving solely on 3 hours of sleep, theoretically I guess you can survive it, as long as your intake of food and water are enough to stave off starvation and thirst respectively, HOWEVER, sooner or later you will inevitably and most likely accidentally, fall victim to some event that normally would require you to be at full alertness and attention, which unfortunately lack of sleep will not allow.

  • You can but its not healthy.. You often times hear people say not to sleep and to sleep less. But it is very healthy and Dr. recommended to get rest and a good 6 hours min or more if you can, sleep more thats good.

    12 hrs a day I think is a little much but between 5-10 I think is good. Or even if you sleep like 4 hours during the night and take a hour or two nap during the day is good too thats what I do.

    I ready once that Google has a sleep area for their workers to take naps since its proven they are more productive and work better with mid day naps.
  • There was a simillar topic at the Warriors about having six 20minutes naps through whole day. Simple calculation - 3 hours a day. And I'm sure that can be done. The main thing about sleeping is giving our brain time to attempt recovery and store whole messages collected through the day. So if you mention to just DO something you can try, but while learning something I guess it's pointless.
  • I don't think having three hours of sleep one night is bad. But if you do it continuously day after day, I think that could take a toll on your health. More sleep is necessary in conjunction to good eating and staying active. I know Donald Trump only gets 4 hours a night. He thinks any more is a waste of a life since there is so much to do. If it works for him cool, but in the end I don't think that's a healthy way to live.

  • I don't think it would be healthy to deprive yourself of sleep. It is practical from time to time when you need to really finish a project or what not but doing it as a habit would certainly be detrimental in the long term.

    • I love my sleep! I have trained myself to survive on 6-6.5 hours a day. Don't want it to go less than that due to the potential negative health effects. I have subsequently "reclaimed" an hour a day as before I'd sleep almost 8 hours on average.

    I'm surviving on 3-4 at the moment; but have to ensure that I stretch at least twice a day, work out daily, and maintain a strict diet to keep my body from just going completely out of wack. You have to be careful with how you handle things or risk messing yourself up in the long term.

    If I were to choose between 6-7 hours of sleep and making money but deprive myself from sleeping, I would choose to sleep. There may be many sucessful persons who survive with only 2-3 hours of sleep, but if you want to have a healthy body and mind you have to rest preoperly. We should not put the money above our health, or put our health in danger because we want to make more money. I had to seep only 4 hours a night for the last two weeks and I can say that I was tired all the time and in a bad mood. So I do not recommend to sleep less only because there are public figures that do this.
  • I read some study about it that says it varies according to the genetics you have. For examples there are people who have inherited genes which help them be healthy while sleeping just 5-6 hours a day ( The gene is very rare, found in just 3-4% of population).

    I actually have a friend like that, I am so surprised to see how less she sleeps.

    After Reading about this study I told her about this theory and she said may be that gene theory is true because her Mom is also like that. Her Mom sleeps like 3-4 hours a day.
  • 3 hours sleep. You can survive, and you can live with this, but later you will find yourself in deep psychology problems in my opinion. You gonna lose your focus, attention and your face probably will look bad.

    God gave us 6-12 hours of darkness, and we should use it. My opinion - we have sleep at least 7 hours day - You'll be productive, happy, and energetic!

  • Sleeping patters are different for everyone. I heard a doctor once say that it all relates back to what kind of sleeping you had as a baby. There is a study about adolences that ssays that they work better and longer if they start later in the day, I think there is even a school in the US that is trialling that.

    I support the idea of 5-6 hours sleep max. Any longer and then your not getting enough deep sleep - move house or change your bed. Simple.

  • Seems like the common theme is less sleep shaves time off of your life at the end, however, you get to experience more since you are awake longer and accomplish more. A shorter, more full, exciting and successful life is more appealing to me than a good night's sleep and an unnecessarily elongated lifespan. The comment about quality is also important as well though. Some people I personally know can accomplish more in an hour or two than most people can in a day so they sleep quite a bit.
    I personally function better if I keep my sleep time between 4-6 hours. I wonder if there is such a thing as too much sleep...Fascinating topic either way!

    Looking at the billionaires, scientists, presidents and other famous people there are those who are fine with 4 hours of sleep while others get by with 8 hours. This implies that you cannot assume you need 8 hours of sleep daily. Have you tested 5 hours for 10 weeks and observed the outcome? Have you tested 3 hours? Or is that people are stuck in their comfort zones?

    The 7-8 hours of sleep that doctors tell us we need is for the average person. And I believe in every society their are extremes. There are people who think outside the box; there are those who are below or above average.

    What if you tested and discovered that you are one of those who needs just 4 hours of sleep...think of what an extra 100 hours a month can do to your productivity.

  • Well, I do not believe to spend half of my life while sleeping, and I hardly sleep for 3-4 hours per day. However, I take a short break after 3-4 days, and take a complete rest for 6-7 hours. Until now, I have judged that a man can control his appetite and sleep as per his wish, but you must not stress too much to prove yourself to be a super human.
  • 3 hours sleep everyday is actually not a big deal for some professions. I actually know some accountants and doctors who don't sleep at all for 2 or 3 days straight. Some survive a week with just some power naps and the like. So it just boils down to how your body or how you make your body cope up with such a schedule and lifestyle. If you don't do steps to fix your daily schedule to cope with only 3 hours of sleep then you certainly wouldn't survive it.

    My suggestion is, as much as possible give what your body needs and only exert stress and effort when necessary.

We won't be able to do the things that we need to do in our daily life if you get to sleep 3 hours a day.   • Somewhere I read that more and more people are sleeping less than six hours a night, and a huge 75% of us has sleep difficulties at least a few nights per week. A short-lived bout of insomnia is generally nothing to worry about. The bigger concern is chronic sleep loss, which can contribute to health problems such as weight gain, high blood pressure, and a decrease in the immune system's power.
    While more research is needed to explore the links between chronic sleep loss and health, it's safe to say that sleep is too important to shortchange.
    I am a fan of sleep, so I try to sleep 8-9 hours everyday, and if that does not happen, I try to catch up with a daytime power nap.

      That's just because your brain is going "what the actual f*** is going on here?!" If you keep going for a few days it says "you're a jerk, but I'll make this work." Then a few days after it's used to it. Then all of a sudden you're happy even on 3 hours of sleep.

      It only takes about two weeks. That's why the benefits are called "short term". Long term benefits begin right after, although admittedly there is no scientific proof concerning what truncated sleep schedules do to the body over the long term.

  • I can last from a 5 hours of sleep, but with 3 hours? I'd be cranky. i don't know, but sleeping enough is somehow important for me. We are tiring our minds, our eyes and our hands in this kind of a job so I guess having enough sleep is a must. Some say not having enough sleep will cause neurons of your brain to die. And i am not some medical students but I guess having less neurons will be a very bad thing to happen
  • Even losing one hour of sleep at night is enough to inhibit natural abilities to think or respond quickly. Granted it's not always the quantity of hours slept that matters as much as the quality of sleep received. It's realistic for someone who receives a well rested 4-5 hours of sleep to be more active than someone who gets a restless 6-7 hours.

    As Dex mentioned however, one cannot continue to live a healthy lifestyle for long as sleep has limitless medical benefits to the human body; e.g. cardiovascular health, energy balance and infection control. We all want to be successful and make money sure, but to what extent will you push yourself to jeopardizing your own comfort and well being?

      I like the idea of sleeping less because I know I'd probably achieve more, I just don't think I'd function well for very long on less than 5.
  • I think you may be able to do it short term, but I think long term it would be very difficult to effectively function on only 3-4 hours of sleep. I think the bare minimum is around 5 hours, but most people tend to perform at the optimum level with 7-8 hours of sleep.

  • This is a no brainier. Medical professionals have proven long ago that you need about 8 hours of sleep every night to be healthy. Any less than that and you are setting yourself up for a whole assortment of medical problems.

  • It's funny how people keep claiming that 3-4 hours of sleep is unhealthy but aren't posting any factual proof to back up those claims...just their opinions. I spoke w/ a buddy of mine on this subject who's a health expert on this subject. This guy, by the way, is one of those people who sleep 2-4 hours a night. I asked him would sleeping only 2-4 hours a night have a real impact on one's health. His answer to me was that if a person is eating properly thereby keeping their health in check, then sleeping only 2-4 hours a night won't hurt you. I have to agree with him because I tried it for myself. I went on a raw food diet for a month and sleeping for only a few hours was not a problem. I felt fully energized and all.

    For those that don't eat healthily, you may wanna try the polyphasic sleeping program. This is where you sleep for 2-3 hours and take short naps during the day. I've tried that before and it definitely works.
  • For me I NEED 9 hours of sleep else I don't think, focus or get any quality work done. Plus I'm quite strict on going to the gym 7 days a week (2 days weights, 5 days cardio), I find it really helps my energy levels and getting a good night's sleep. The real difference I find is that I wake up everyday refreshed, you know that feeling when you wake up, go back to sleep and wake up feeling great - that's me everyday.

    Yes, living without sleep / a minimum period of sleep is very appealing.

    But now really, are you taking 100% advantage of the remaining 16 hours a day?

    There are two ideal sleep cycles - 5:45 hours and 7:15, at least for me. Anything under 5:45 means sleep deprivation (for me). Anything over 9 hours means waking up tired (for me).
  • I prefer to listen to my body. Sleep when sleepy... wake up when fresh. That's it. Could be 3 hours... could be 12 hours. Doesn't matter.
  • Wow! What a discussion....From few days...I am feeling that I am getting less time to do all my work....What if I would have more work to complete all my jobs.....Thats why I started to search ways of sleeping less but with full energy during waking hours.

    I feel, that must be possible somehow to train my body to achieve that level where I will need only 3-4 hours of sleep every day. If I learn this technique and properly utilize my own time at fullest then I am sure that I will automatically get more out of my life.     One famous guru "Sadhguru" from Isha foundation, India was speaking to a gathering. He asked his audience that if they have a car and if that car has to be kept 15 days in the garage and next 15 days working...Will we call it as an efficient car or machine....definitely not. Do we feel that our body is a lesser efficient machine than a Car? Many of us will agree that our bodies are the best machines in the entire universal system. He even goes on to say that he know that there is some method in the Yoga by which you can achieve this efficiency of the body.
    I may join his sessions in the future....But yes! I am agree that one can achieve less sleep but great energy throughout the waking hours by teaching the same to our own body.
  • I think it's all a matter of balance. When we have a project on and the juices are flowing and we are pumped with adrenalin we can function well for sometime with little sleep. But we need to listen to our bodies - long term we need deep restful sleep in delta to regenerate. This could be quality sleep for a short while each day as opposed to light -disturbed sleep where alpha and theta are achieved but not delta. It's more about the state than the time.
    Do some form of meditation or other focus, some yoga, self hypnotherapy (to increase your efficiency of reaching delta) and you will likely find you need less sleep and are functioning beautifully when awake - probably with more clarity.

    I trained myself to be need less sleep because I have a disabled child who needs rolling in the night. But when I sleep between tending to him, I can go into restful sleep quite quickly.

  • You can definitely get a lot more done if you sleep only 3 hrs a day, but the people that sleep 8 hrs would be producing higher quality work. Sleeping 3 hrs once in awhile is doable, it definitely not good for you though. Sleep is essential for recovery and repair.

    • it happens sometimes ..some guy died a few days after diablo 3 was released ..but he already had chronic conditions ..it was a problem in korea where kids would play without sleeping or eating for several days ..

      but as brute said priorities are priorities ..if you put priority on gaining wealth..and ignore the needs of the body ..it is only good to hope to build enough wealth.. to afford to have someone take care of you when your body breaks .. surviving a heart attack can cost 50-100 thousand dollars not surviving it only requires 10k or so ..

      and then being able to afford several hundred a month for medication co pays

      but then i worked shift work for 8 years ..made good money but the combination of high stress and cronic sleep deprivation ripped my mind apart ..then the job after that kept my mind messed up and ripped my body up ..

      i have been mentally and physically broken ..broken on every level..

      now that i have regenerated much of my physical heal.. and got a grasp on my physical health and am in a far more powerful place ..though still with plenty of problems ..

      I am looking for work or productive endevors that get me out of bed in the morning .

      as far as sleep goes .. never sleep in get you body use to waking up at the same time so you open your eyes even if the alarm does not go off ..you mess your body up much more by sleeping in when not working ..and trying to shift back the next day .. than if you go to bed later ..wake up the same time and may need a nap ..

      find when that hour is that it is best for you to wake up and stick to it ..then play with when you go to sleep .

    And sleep before 12 Midnight is twice the quality of sleep
    after midnight, so it's best to get to bed before that time.

    • 6 hours is my minimum as well. I've done days run on small naps 60 - 90 min each, but I like my solid 6 hours. It works for me so why try to mess with that?
  • For me, when I am working on a major project, like what I have been working on ... I do not sleep much. My husband doesn't understand how I do it. I'll generally stay up till 3am, 4am ... I've been up till the sun comes up working. And then I am ready to jump out of the bed at 8am or 9am and do it all again.

    I have had many days of functioning on 3 or 4 hours a sleep.

    I think when you are passionate about what you are doing, your need for as much sleep disappears. Many very successful people only get 5 or 6 or less hours of sleep.

    I am not going to say it's at ALL good for your health though. So, that's the issue. Your body does need time to replenish itself. Your brain goes through all the brainwave frequencies and REM sleep and all of that is by design and if you are not getting sound, deep sleep, you are not repairing and restoring.

    And also it will eventually age you.

    I speak from experience and as someone who is NOT practicing getting enough sleep.

    So, whether you are feeling tired or not ... you are not functioning optimally with anything less than I'd say 6 hours minimum ...

    I guess I feel for me, once this big project is over, I'll make up for it ... (even though we all know that's not entirely true).

    Sleeping is a habit, just like drinking water, eating right, exercising ... and one of the things that I have found works (besides hypnosis and meditation of course) is making a commitment to just go to bed a half hour earlier each night. You do have to put your health first. You can't kill yourself in the process of trying to become a millionaire. I should tell that to ME!

    But realize the benefits ... realize that you think much more clearly and therefore can get more accomplished during the day...

    I have not read the entire thread but I'll contribute what I know regarding this subject.

    I have tried this no sleep thing many times and It's never been a long term success, eventually after a few days it catches up to me and affects my productivity.

    I also know the so called experts contradict each other on this subject.

    For example my family doctor straight up told me that once your brain finishes growing you don't need much sleep and that he personally only sleeps 4-5 hours a night and that I would be fine doing the same thing. He said it would not affect my health.

    On the other hand I've seen many other people say that lack of sleep will lead to an early death.

    To me it doesn't make sense that 4-5 hours of sleep would be enough, the body needs rest so it can perform at it's best so I try to get 8 hours of sleep every night.

    If you want to create more time to work on your business then cut out TV, going to the bar, hanging out with friends, video games... etc but not sleep
  • I get about 6hrs everyday from about 7:30am to 1:30pm and it works great for me. I stay up all night because there are less distractions, like friends/family sleeping, crappy TV shows on, and noise in general. I work midnights for work too so that helps me out and keeps me on the schedule. I have noticed that I can get a lot more done in the middle of the night rather than when I wake up to about 9pm.

    I stick to plan when it comes to my sleep, meals, and workouts. These three things together keep my energy where it needs to be.
  • 3 hours of sleep is good for a once of thing. I wouldn't want to make it a habit though. I would say 7 - 8 hours is the right number that we should be getting. But I can't talk, Its almost 4am here and I have to be up at 5! No sleep for me. No sleep is better than a little sleep for me. Bring on the red bulls and coffee.

What is the use of earning so much if you're not going to be able to spend it? What is the real need of money? Wealth is only wealth when you are able to use it to achieve happiness.     • If I don't sleep at night, then the next day I'll uncontollably start going asleep in public as I go about my day. On the train, at my desk, etc. Not good. I have no choice about it, my body shuts down. Often don't even realize until I wake up. Then my schedule is messed up.

      People often think of sleep as just something their brain needs to rest. It isn't true. The entire body uses and needs sleep to repair and function properly. All the organs, the immune system, hormones and chemicals.

      First of all, let's just talk about the brain, as that's primarily what shuts down to sleep.

      Even when you're awake, if you are sleep deprived then parts of your brain takes naps when you're eyes are open and you think of yourself as 'awake'. Goes to show, you can't actually 'cheat' sleep. You don't have that choice.

      "These local sleeps happen throughout the brain. Often, neurons in one part of the brain would flip off while their peers in another area would stay on.       Then there are the affects on the body. Too many to name. We already know we need sleep for human growth hormone. We know we need it for cellular repair and immune function. We know we need it for hormone balance and to keep cortisol levels lower. We know we need it for Neurotransmitter balance.

  • When I first started my company I would work crazy hours. I would be up for 48-60hours straight then sleep for a measely 9hrs just to repeat the process.

    I have since been able to slow my roll sort of speak and get 4-6 hrs a night. I catch up during the weekend.

    its almost a year passed. Sometimes i feel i easily forget little things, maybe its because using too much internet affects me to forget little things or because of my sleep cycle i dont know which one is. Problem is think direct, being creative in night is much better than day time, but i have a work to do in day time.
    So few days ago i redesigned my work space to room without sunlight and noise, just like a night. It was very useful i can be more creative in day time than past days but its just feels like living in night forever.

    • Just because some successful people don't require a lot of sleep it doesn't mean you should start trying to train yourself to get by of three hours sleep a night. It sounds like something that comes naturally to them, that's how their body works. Don't try and fit a square peg in a round hole.
  • I heard about the Uberman sleep schedule, where you sleep for 20 minutes every four hours, for a total of two hours of sleep every 24 hours. The theory is REM sleep is the only absolutely vital sleep stage, so this schedule trains you to cram all your needed REM sleep into two hours a day. I have never tried this, and am not advocating it, just saying I've heard about it.

    it is about finding your rythym .. i can realy only get a max of 6 hours sleep at night..but then again i may have sleep apnea so during sleep i don't get enough oxygen to my brain .

    i have rapid cycling by polar disorder ..so there are times i can only get 4 hours of sleep a night ..then there are times i will get 6 and need a couple hour long naps

    Not that I am sleeping 5 hours for success, but that's just how my life is right now. The most benefit I find is when I catch up on sleep on the weekend, I feel fresh, motivated and grounded. Ready for whatever life throws at me.

    I also have adrenal issues so sleep is very much needed in my recovery. Everyone is different. Listen to who you are and what you need and pursue that.

    • I find it impossible to measure the amount of actual sleep I've been getting. How do you measure micro sleep? I know at night it is not more than a few hours since that is all the time I'm laying down or in a position to sleep, though most often I keep waking up and feel like I had not been asleep. Sometimes I close my eyes just cause I know I should get sleep, though I don't think I'm actually asleep most of the time, only slowly thinking with my eyes closed.

      Then during the day it is a different story as I often fall asleep in a chair or on my desk cause I'm literally too tired to keep my eyes open, and those times I often don't even realize I fell asleep until something wakes me up. Then I know it was true sleep and was dreaming. Though I can't measure the time of that either since it's so intermintent, only a few minutes here and there usually.

      I hate it. I end up wasting more time with being tired and sleeping on and off during the day, and being tired all the time is a huge open door for intrusive thoughts and not being able to control my thoughts and sensitivities.

    • I believe in getting as much sleep as possible. I'm able to work harder and I'm more efficient when I'm well rested. I can go 1 day with 3 or 4 hours of sleep but if I do it consistently, I begin to have problems focusing and completing my daily tasks with efficiency.

    I used to work 36 hour shifts in my last job (medical).
    You can do that but it feels shitty. That is why I started here and now work online. I wanted to feel alive, not only pass through the day and see other people who are really alive and doing nice things with their time. It is even my motivation when I'm stuck or googles algo changes orso! I never ever want to back to that semi-awake life.

    I think that is more healthy then your 3-4 hour sleep. The idea is to sleep every 4 hours 20 minutes. (Uberman). Just search it for more info.

    A boy I vaguely knew tried this for a year and it worked for him. He did say that it was not good for his relation with his girlfriend. So he turned back to a normal ritme.

In the military you learn and use this commonly. And if you learn this you could manage with just 2-3 hour sleep. People that are meditating can do the same thing too.

    • Many years ago I discovered something interesting about sleep and the amount I required in order to be at my peak effectiveness, and some of you might want to give it a try.

      Back when I was going through a particularly frustrating part of my life I began to go running in the mornings. It wasn't for the exercise and improvement of my physical condition, that was a side-effect of the real reason I went running. At that time in the morning it was not only dark, but also really cold - some days I would find myself running in the rain or even in the snow. If I got up early enough and had the time to go running before going to work then I could function much better on the job with a much clearer head than on the days when I did not go running.

      Eventually I expanded my workout program because I got bored with running all the time. But what's interesting about this and relates to sleep is, when I went running 3 times a week I could knock off about 30 minutes worth of sleep and still feel at optimal condition. I upped the running to every weekday and discovered my body required even less sleep.

      I wasn't actually trying to reduce my sleep but instead found that when I went to bed at the same time as prior to starting the running routine I would often awaken much earlier than the alarm clock went off.

      Life gave me some extra lemons and I started running twice a day every day, first thing in the morning and also late at night just before preparing for bed. Total running time turned out to be about an hour, 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at night.

      What is unique about this is, once I had done this for more than a few days I realized that for every hour I worked out, whether running or at the gym, I could gain an additional hour awake that I did not need to sleep. So if I spent an hour at either an intense workout of just about constant movement or ran the 30 minutes in the morning plus 30 minutes at night, then I could cut my sleep time by two hours . . . one hour for the workout and the additional hour for whatever else I wanted or needed to do.

      This turned out to be a pretty good ratio up to a point. I took it to 1-1/2 hours of workout and 3 hours less sleep and was still feeling refreshed and able to function well. And the truth is, as my lungs expanded and I became stronger and healthier I felt better with less sleep than when I stayed in bed longer (on weekends sometimes) even if I went to run or workout later on in the day.

      There was even a time a few years after I'd discovered this where I was frustrated over something and could not sleep, and I got up and threw on my running clothes and went to a park and went running at 2 in the morning taking about 4 or 5 laps around the track. (Safety was not an issue only because this park was a favorite hangout place for police officers to drive into, back into a parking space facing the track I was on, and fill out their paperwork during slow periods of their graveyard shift.) Upon my return home, I headed back to bed and fell asleep pretty much immediately, insomnia problem solved!

      I have since stumbled onto a site that explained what I described above. The body requires a certain amount of oxygen which it is able to get when you go to sleep. If you don't get enough, then you struggle throughout the next day. Exercising allows the body to take in larger amounts of oxygen while you are awake due to the deeper breathing you may go through as you work out. And that increase in oxygen may reduce your requirement for more sleep.

      In any case, try adjusting not just your sleep time but also your exercise levels at the same time and see if it makes a difference for you. It certainly did for me.

  • There are plenty of successful people who sleep 6-8 hours a night. Why not emulate them? Get 6-8 hours of sleep AND be successful?

    Of course, you'll never see quotes from them bragging about sleeping 6-8 hours, because it's nothing to brag about.

    In addition, you don't HAVE to give up sleep to get more time. If you find you're only productive 8 hours a day, sleeping less won't automatically make that time into 10-14 hours. It's possible you might waste the extra time you "save" by sleeping less.

    I think it's all about life management--manage your schedule so you can fit it around 8 hours of sleep.

    Of course, every "body" is different--some people can survive with less sleep, some people can't.

    I always do this depending on the amount of work at hand and what I want to achieve. Personally I have a customized plan of uber sleep pattern that I use. To achieve this, you could try switching your routine for 21 days and keeping track of this. Stay disciplined and focusing at what is at hand. Try meditate for 30 minutes at exactly 12:30am to 1:00am. This will give you more power and alertness since the human brain starts experiencing fatigue as from midnight. At 3am it will be worse but you could substitute the fatigue with frequent standing and walking while reading/working. Take raw foods like salads to keep you going. In my own opinion one can truly live with 3hrs sleep

  • I agree with the method of sleeping a few hours twice a day. Often, I'll sleep 4 hours at night and 2-3 hours in the afternoon, and it tends to work really well. Got used to doing this in college. Just napping a little every once in a while rather than sleeping 8 hours straight will keep you going.

    However, I don't agree with the no sleep = success correlation. There are tons of minimum wage workers going to two or three part time jobs, taking care of their families, etc., and getting no rest. Maybe, to them, they're successful. It's all about personal standards. But I'm sure many people would just them as 'not successful' because they're not making a lot of money. If we're defining success as money, then that theory is pretty much debunked. Tons of people sleep little and make barely enough to scrape by.

Since then, I've had to re-train myself to even sleep beyond 3 hours!

Perhaps you do alright for a week, a month, six months: sooner or later something is gonna crack because the human mainframe and CPU were not designed to operate flawlessly on such little restorative sleep.       The benefit is not only feeling better, but how much more productive you are as you grow older. I get a lot more done everyday when I am rested. I still take the power nap everyday as well. Doing that and a glass of Emergency-C everyday really works!
  • Not in the long run. I studied sleep disorders in my advance level psychology and the problem is the potential for lack of REM sleep. REM sleep is crucial for mental and physical health. If a person goes too long without REM sleep they can develop psychosis along with other serious physical problems. That being said - there are plenty of people who naturally get by on 5-7 hours of sleep without any problems. I just wouldn't make a habit out of those 'only 2-3 hours of sleep' a night experiences.

  • OP... shortening YOUR bodies sleep pattern may work for a while but YOUR body needs what it needs. My wife needs a solid 8 hrs or she is a non functioning bear. Just because a few successful people can live on little sleep doesn't mean that YOU can.

    I could probably survey my personal facebook friends and come up with 2-3 times the examples of people who run on very little sleep who are not successful by your standards.

    I run on 4-6 hrs of sleep and I have done that since I was a child. I CAN sleep longer but it literally pains me to do so.

    Its 12:48 Here. I am about to turn in. I have to be in my car in 5 hrs to go to work. No problem at all.

    Be careful trying to pattern successful people because of their nuances. Their nuances may or may not make them successful...

    I.E... drinking only Starbucks because famous people do will NOT make you famous...

    Wearing Tommy Bahama shirts will not make you be on the beach.

    If you can FUNCTION effectively for the next 30-40 years on 3 hrs of sleep a night then go for it. If not... well stop trying to be like other people and concentrate on being the best YOU you can be.

  • This is actually quite possible. The largest sleep study ever conducted found that what matters is sleep quality, not sleep quantity. Similarly, there are already a great number of people who practice "sleep hacking." The more advanced people in this are able to sleep 5 hours or less every night while still performing well ... and can go down to 2 hours per night for 3 or 4 days in a row without it impacting how they perform during the day.

    Of course, it takes some time to get to that point, but it is doable. Increasing sleep quality so you can decrease sleep quantity is quite doable in the immediate sense as well, though. For example, simply using the following sleep induction mat often makes people who otherwise struggled to fall asleep ... fall asleep in under 10 minutes instead.

    Should you? No.

    But it is not a black or white situation. It depends on your general level of fitness, what you eat, age, cardiovascular health and much more. Navy SEALS in training survive with less.

  • Sleep for me is a massive inconvenience. I have lots of things I would rather be doing but it is a necessity of life. I couldn't survive on less than 7-8 hours. With the use of coffee and other stimulants I can get down to 5-6 hours but over time it messes me up.

    There have been experiments where they've removed people's perception of time and they found they slept on average for 4 hours, but I don't think they were involved in large amounts of physical activity or tasks that required the use of their mental faculties.

    I couldn't work out and be on point for whatever mental challenges arose daily on 4 hours of sleep. I could if I lived an average life and didn't have much to do other than eat, sleep and do other mundane things, but who wants to live a life like that? knowing what I now know that doesn't seem like much of a life.
  • That's is nice mate! I am sure that your practicing spiritual techniques like prays and meditations, self-discipline and have a good schedule of the things.

    I am sure that in future we will be all able to sleep less then 6 hours. People like Nikola Tesla where able to sleep only 1 hour and to restore all the energy that he spend during the last 23 hours. But his spiritual level was beyond his limits. Even in his interview he speak about that.

    I am now able to sleep 6h and I hope in future I will improve that!

  • I feel my self very exhausted I sleep 5 hours a day. I need at least 7 hours. It's not about sleeping less to do more stuff, because in the end of the day these hours will be very low productive , so why not to take a nap instead and come back with more energy?

    • True! Taking a nap is on of the best methods that can really help to restore your energy.

      The last study that I have read about nap was really astonished me. Scholars found out that there 3 types of nap: 30, 60 and 90 min. In my opinion the 30 min nap is the best choice for every person, because it will help restore you level of energy in the next few hours and you will not having a problem with sleeping before you go to bed.

      Also, people who have full schedule during the day, I strongly suggest you to start practice meditation. If you don't have time during the day, then to that before you go to bed.

      Do you know what are the benefits of meditate before bed? - It will help you to fall asleep faster and when you wake up you will feel full with energy. If you practice meditation regularly, you will decrease the hours of sleeping.

  • I constantly debate on my hours of sleep in order to achieve my full potential productivity. As much as I would love to survive on 3-4 hours, it is simply unrealistic for me without crashing and taking a nap in the late afternoon. I strongly avoid taking naps in order to maintain my stream of my productive routine without getting distracted. One sleep cycle takes up approximately 90 min, and it is recommend to go through the cycle 4-6 times per night. Of course, sleeping needs vary among individuals. Personally, when I'm running low on day time/work hours I try to limit my sleep cycles but still make sure to have at least 2-3 cycles of 90 min and then drink coffee during the day to avoid naps that could ruin my sleep schedule.
  • Last time when I didn't get enough sleep, I began to feel lethargic, kind of depressed and very lazy at work. I want to say by this that people if ain't getting proper sleep cannot focus on their work and eventually becomes suicidal.

  • "Survive" or "Live a fulfilling life full of abundance and joy"? If it is the former, the answer is sure, but if you keep it up, you are likely to ruin your health, and then perhaps die younger. If it is the latter, the answer is no. And, as I get older, I feel the consequences of robbing myself of sleep sooner and with more force.

  • Sleeping 3 hours is tolerable for me, I can work well but only for the first quarter of the day. In the after noon I better take a nap or refrain from working because I know my performance will go crashing down. Sometimes I just keep on eating (not necessarily meal) sweets to keep my mind running but at the end of the day I know how tired I'm gonna be.

    If this would happen on a day-to-day basis I don't think I can carry on.
  • I have just recently realised that not getting enough sleep was a large portion of the reason for my health problems. After I got my kids I survived on 3-5 hours of sleep every day. 2 year after I started getting anxiety, and problems with dehydration. When I went to the hospital, after what I thought was a heart attack, they told me that not getting enough sleep could mess up the body's salt balance, and that mainly was the reason for my problems. So please be careful, and take care of your health, it is one of the most precious things you've got.

    • This is coming from someone who for a half year could only get 1-2 hours of sleep a day because of insomnia.

      It's definitely possible to survive it but to me it was the worst 6 months of my life. It completely messed with my focus and health. Not to mention it made me very irritable and I ended up having less and less patience with others.

      I would say if you want to cut back on sleep while having more time to be productive 5-6 hours would probably be the best choice.

  • It all comes down to priorities. If money is more important than your health, then you can sacrifice sleep for work.
    Human body needs around of six hours to sleep to work properly. I don`t know how many doctors are around here, but if you want, you could search online for the effects of sleep deprivation, or ask a doctor what would are the longterm effects of not getting enough sleep.
    Human are interesting, we waste our health to get more money, and then we waste our money to get our health back, the only problem is, it`s harder, if not impossible to get your health back.

  • I think that everyone has their own unique needs. It's finding that perfect amount thats the tricky part. I used to go 2 days straight and then sleep sound for 8 hours. other times I would cat nap a few times each day and totally disregard the night as any different than the day. Work was great and solid back then so I was always excited about it. when your happy about what your doing I think sleep takes a backseat so to speak.
  • I sleep anywhere from 4-6 hours per night on a regular basis. I'm usually up until 1 or 2 in the morning, then I go to bed and arise around 6am. I occasionally sleep a bit longer, but that's the exception and not the rule.

  • If you find that one thing, that keeps you awake, the is no need to sleep 6 hours and more,

    We have a limited time here on earth, so if one spend their time sleeping than spending it Grinding, the results is gonna be mediocre,

    The main thing is the drive, what drive you? what is your why, why do you do what you do?. If you wake up at 7:00 am, and i wake up at 4:30 am, by the time you wake up at 7:00, i have done a lot of thing while you still sleeping.

    You can train yourself to sleep less, as you can train yourself to do anything.
    Is all just a habit that we can develop if we want to.

    Sleep less and work more.

    Ok well I sleep average 4 hours, but sometimes 7 hours, but I never really sleep well, toss and turn and drink to much water at night, so up more times if you know what I mean, so many people say they only sleep 3 or 4 hours but later you find out that was not true, I think that say that to sound successful, and they really sleep like 6 or 7 hours,

    So as long as you work when your up, and then you can sleep, your body needs to relax, or your go crazy, everybody sleeps, don't believe the hype.

  • In average I sleep 5-6 hours, but sometimes only around 4 hours for a period. I don't believe anyone can survive more than a short time with only 3 hours of sleep.

  • Yes you definitely can. When you're only getting 3-4 hours of sleep in the beginning it's hard to stay awake. All you ever wanna do is sleep. But after awhile your body starts to adjust.

    I only get 4-5 hours of sleep and I'm never tired throughout my day.*

    A lot of successful people run their days off of 3 hours of sleep.

    So yeah... highly doable.
