I've been devouring the info on this board at a feverish pace over the past week and one thing I keep reading over and over again is this:

"Find a system that you're comfortable with and interested in and stick with it until it is successful for you. Don't give up and jump from system to system."

What systems do this statement refer to? Different WSO systems? Or is it the various methods of affilliate marketing like article, PPC, video, etc.? I'm ready to take action and get started but another piece of advice I've read often is to have a plan and stick with it.

What are some general examples of systems that a beginner could use to get started?

It applies to ANY system that's proven to work. PPC, PPV, media buying, SEO, article marketing... Anything.

Most beginners focus on a system for 1 or 2 weeks, don't make money and then move on. The problem is that there is something we call of "Learning Curve". This is the time somebody needs to learn how a method really works and start making money from their efforts. Different people have different learning curves, but everybody who is getting started with a method will need to face a learning curve.

When you start working on a system and don't make money it's just you going through the learning curve. Forums, blogs, videos, reports, etc can shorten your learning curve, but the only thing that can eliminate it is your own experience. So when you start working on something be ready to go through the learning curve and don't give up before it ends. If you give up and move on to another method you will start facing a new learning curve and will have lost everything that you have already learned. The faster you move the harder it will be to make money online.

Focus & persistence. These things are the difference between the full-time affiliates and the newbies.
