Tax ID/SS # ????

I live in canada and I'm trying to sign up to some of the CPA networks but the only problem is the Tax ID. They all require that and I'm not sure what it really means. Do I put in my SIN number? Is that safe? If anyone can please help me with this I would really really appreciate that. Ive been trying to find out for the past couple of days. Thank you

    If you don't have a SSN, just supply the equivalent in your country.

    And, yes, it's safe when dealing with well-known companies, but you need to be careful with the shaddy ones!

      I do have my SSN but I'm new with this CPA marketing and I'm not sure about giving out my SSN. I mean why do they need it anyway? And what exactly do you mean by "supply the equivalent in your country"? Can you please explain. I'm a complete newbie my friend.

    If you have the SSN then you don't need an equivalent (it would be another number that your government uses with the same purpose of the SSN).

    And, yes, they need it as well as a complete tax form (not sure about which one should be used by Canadians, contact your affiliate manager for more info about this).

    I am facing a similar issue while trying to publish on Amazon. The 30% tax withholding for non-USA residents is quite high, so if there is any way to reduce or avoid it that would be great. I was advised to submit a w-7 form. But Form W-8BEN may in fact be what is needed.

    You said you do have an SSN and are afraid to give it out, so if you want you can get an EIN for free from the IRS website. Employer Identification Number. you don't need to be an employer to get it; self-employed folks can use it too. and it just substitutes for your SSN.

      From what I have been told, there are 2 types of Tax ID numbers:

      (a) Employee Identification Number (EIN)
      (b) Individual TAX Identification Number(ITIN)

      Both can be used, but it may be easier for a non-resident to get the ITIN. I am still researching this so the information in this thread is helpful. Dealing with tax issues in any country can be confusing.

    You can signup over the phone as well by speaking to one of their aff managers. Tell them your situation and they'll walk you through the process that fits your story.
