Testing Offers With Direct Linking

When direct linking offers to test conversions, about how many clicks do you guys think I should wait for before seeing a conversion so I can build a landing page?

I usually wait for about 30 actions of anything before proceeding but you need to figure in more than just clicks. You need to figure in converstions (i.e. does it convert 1 in 100 or 1 in 500).

Shoot for a 1% converstion at least.

I usually test twice the payout. So if the commision is $50 I wil spent about $100 in advertising before deciding a winner.

If I spent twice that what I am getting paid and still no go the machine is broken.

  • I am new to PPC. Every campaign I have begun that is a direct link to a sales page gets a "too low a quality score to show ads." I am beginning to think that google does not allow direct linking. So far I have not been able to even test direct linking. I am offering pretty good bids too, at $1. Am I right that Google won't even allow testing of direct link campaigns??

Thats because the offer page doesn't have enough content to acheive the right score. Therefore your ad wont be displayed. With direct linking in Google, it will only work with page offers that have lots of content. I'd recommend using ClickBank offers that yap on and on because they have more content.

You will have more luck with pages with thin content or content not closeley related to your ad by direct linking on the content network.

Google is less strict their than on search.

Are clicks cheaper on the content than on search?
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[651367].message }}
  • re: cost. I think you can bid differently for content than search. That's what I understand. The same keyword can be less on content....not tried it yet tho.

But I think content clicks are often off less quality. Because searchers are often more interested then random visitors on an site.

Maybe for some products content is good but for some it sux..

In the past, following the gurus instructions, I would build a landing page before testing the offer - only to find out that my landing page or the offer sales page did not convert. This was a total waste of time.

Now, I link direct to the offer page and if it converts, I then build some blogger blogs and hubpages and link them to the offer page. I rarely use my own domains for cpa offers. Also, I only use PPC on offers that I can make at least $30.00 per sale.

Hi, I have a very high quality score because for a very long time I ran biz ads in Spanish. In Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and Panama, my clicks % was nearly 15%. Because my high clicks %, Google seems to think that I know what I'm doing which allows me to link directly to some offers and get on the first page without paying too much. Also, I look for cpa offers that have what google likes to find in a website; good content and policy, contact us, and about us pages.

      Regards,

If you are direct linking avoid email and zip submits. They worked really well a couple of years ago, but now Google really doesn't like them. Even iFraming the merchant's offer with a landing page doesn't work well anymore for these.

Interesting that at the weekend Trevor Claiborne of Google website optomizer was saying 100 actions, instead of the usual 30 we all tend to use as a benchmark. 100 is not always practical, but Google know something, so worth taking note. On the issue of direct linking, I don't do it, I prefer to test the market via my own page where i have more control first.

Don't forget that Google will only show 1 ad for any given URL, so if you are direct linking and so are other affiliates who are outbidding you... you won't get shown.

iFraming works MUCH better, especially if you optimize the page for relevance and make Google's Quality Score algorythm happy.

  • I am now bidding only on content at 10 cents a keyword and out of over 200 keywords I have no ads shown yet. But I can't bid much. The math on this CPA confuses me: The CPA pays $3/lead. Let's say I pay 5 cents a click. And at 1% conversion rate, it takes me 100 clicks, or $5 to get a sale. So I spend $5 to make $3? And this is a popular field so getting 5 cent clicks is not even possible. Could someone explain the math to me?

You should get a better converstion rate than 1 in 100 for leads.

1 in 100 is usually the average for sales not leads.

It all depends on market, offer, landing page ect....but you convert leads at 5, 10, 20, 30 or sometimes 50% or more...

Need to make sure your ad really tells them "whats on the other side of the door" and use a negative quilifier if you are paying to much (i.e. must be 18)

Randy,Bryan..can you make money AND build a list on CPA offers of $2.00?

At such a low dollar payout, in your experience, what's better...build a list or direct link for profits?

        BUILD A LIST
        You pay $.10 a click. At 100 clicks you've spent $10.00.
25% of those clicks opt-in to your list. Then 30% of those fill out the CPA offer. So, 100x.25=25x.30=7 people x $2.00 = $14.00.
$14.00 minus $10.00 spend=$4.00 profit and 7 people on your list.

        DIRECT LINK
Or, you direct link and get only 20% conversion, so 20 people x $2.00 = $40.00.
$40.00 MINUS $10.00 SPEND = $30 profit and no list.

Which is better? And are these numbers reasonable (assuming good ads, landing page, conversions)?

Well, on submits your conversions should be more like 10%. A 1% conversion is for sales, where folks have to pull out their credit cards.

Marketers making bank on submits are getting their traffic at more like 1-3 cents a click. To get that kind of CPC you have to go way outside the bounds of Google/Yahoo.

I've gotten far better ROI promoting products with decent payouts. Might want to consider finding something that gives you $20-$30 per sale, and can be marketed to an underserved periphery market. For example, selling a home business course to retirees instead of college kids, or diet products to men instead of women.

  • Randy good advice. I am going to try different campaigns, and I will definitely expand with campaigns that pay more than $3. I need to see what I do the best in, then roll out lots. Just built my first landing page today, I am going to see if i can drive some free traffic to it first using classifieds, then maybe PPC. It is for a CPA.

1- not directly. You can get some data on affilaite links from stuff like Keyword Spy.
2- not necessarily. A higher bid does not guarantee placement. It does, however, guarantee you will spend more than you need to.
3 - mo higher mo bettah. Optimize your landing pages for at least 5, aim for 9.

The easyiest way to direct link I find is to forward a domain name you prurchase from godaddy.com ... Basically you find a product and if its name is www.myproduct.com you go to godaddy and purchase www.myproductz.com or something similiar then in your domain settings you go to forwarding and insert your affiliate URL in to the forwarding adress click 301 permantent and also click masking and then you are direct linking for once off $10.

Also google recognises this as a seperate URL and you do not compete with all the other direct linkers out therewhich give you a much higher quality score and cheaper links.

and for $10 a year its worth it
