I read somewhere once that it depends on your bid, I don't know if it's true but I personally do follow this method. I set up a pretty high ppc (above the suggested) and once it's approved (usually within couple of hours for me) I lower the bid. Make sure you're in front of the computer at that time, otherwise you'll burn your entire budget quite fast.
Anyway, I never had to wait more than a couple of hours.

Edit: No difference between mid-week/week-end
