My Secret For Getting KILLER CTRs On POF Dating Ads

Hey Warriors,

I don't post on the CPA subforum that much, so let me introduce myself real quick.

My name is Anthony and I've been doing IM for 6 years. Last February, I wanted to earn some extra cash, so I paid a mentor $4,000 per month to teach me how to promote dating CPA offers on Plenty of Fish.

It was so worth it. Within 3 days, I was making $100 per day. Within a few weeks, I got up to $500 per day in profit. At my "peak", I was testing up to 50 new creatives per day and spending up to $700-800.

I was doing a hosting a webinar the other day (on a completely unrelated topic) and mentioned offhand that I do CPA marketing. A lot of the attendees were curious to learn my affiliate/CPA marketing strategy, so I decided to create a post here.

I don't mind sharing this info because nowadays, I don't have time to testing new campaigns (nor do I want to). Instead, I have a few long-term campaigns that I turn on and off to make extra money on the side.

This post is going to be on how to create ads for long-term campaigns that don't "burn out" as quickly.

Let's jump right in.

In my experience the image is the most important part of your ad. If I had to estimate, I'd say your image accounts for 80-90% of your clicks. Then, your headline, then ad copy.

There's 2 types of ads I use: 110x80s and 310x110s. My mentor has tried the long banner ads (I forgot the exact dimensions). He got insane CTRs, but barely any conversions.

I've had the best results with 110x80s. They're my bread and butter. When I find a good ad, one of the ways I scale is by turning it into a 310x110.

110x80
  • Pros: can dynamically insert {age} and {state}. Grabs attention better
  • Cons: smaller, limited characters for title/body
310x110
  • Pro: you can create your ad however you like
  • Con: no dynamic insertion
I recommend starting out with 110x80s because you can test more easily. Once you find a winner, scale it to 310x110.

Ad image guidelines

Finding a good ad image is the most important part of this whole process so I dedicate 70% of my time to browsing the web for pictures. I started outsourcing this later and it saved me a lot of time, but the only reason I was able to make this work was that I knew which images generally worked and which didn't and told those guidelines to my outsources.

The things between an excellent image and an average one can be super subtle and you never know until you test. But you'll start to develop a "6th sense" after lots of testing.

But here's what I found works the best in general...
  • Amateur looking images (not professional or stock photos)
  • Anything weird or shocking
  • If you're targeting men - women with curves, cleavage, bikinis, legs, glasses, sleepwear (although these can be tough to get approved) webcam-esque
  • If you're targeting women - men with tattoos, shirtless men, muscles, uniforms (it's also a lot easier to get photos of men approved)

My process for creating photos

I screencap photos from the following websites:
  • Flickr (my favorite)
  • Tumblr
  • Adult image boards (non-nude)
  • 2leep
The last one is a traffic exchange websites with lots of weird/shocking/ strange photos. I like these sites because the images have been "pre-tested" for high CTRs.

After collecting my photos, I copy them into Photoshop. I have an Photoshop action sequence set up that automatically resizes the photo into 110x80 and sharpens the image so your ad stands out from everyone else's. (The Photoshop action saves SOOO much time.)

My secret for creating killer ads

Upload a TON of new creative. Like I mentioned earlier, at my peak, I was testing up to 50 new creative a day. And I would usually get these results:
  • ~10 never get approved, even after multiple resubmissions
  • ~30 have bad CTRs and I cut them right away
  • ~5-10 are decent and they were profitable for a few days
  • 1-3 CRUSH it. These get insane CTRs and conversions and maintained an incredibly ROI for a long time, like this one:

The key is to continue testing TONS until you find a few killer creatives. Then, focus on optimizing/scaling those. (You'll also find that your best performing ads are the ones that are slightly risqué, so you should err on the side of "too much" rather than playing it safe.)

Hope this post helps!

- Anthony

Never scaled to FB, but I have a friend who's doing pretty well with dating on FB. He's also doing everything legit, without cloaking.

Photoshop action sequence: Resize image to 110x80 and sharpen a few times.

LOL pretty much. Once you find a good pic, look at who else added it to their favorites and that will give you hundreds of additional albums to browse through.

Yes- same headline/ad copy. Images matter the most, so you should test images first, and then tweak copy after you find winners.

the main thing I got from your post, as some one who has never used PoF, is your CPM rate of 16c
How does PoF price ads is it CPM or CPC

Pof is cpm based. So cost per 1000 impressions.

Depends on what you bid on. You can even bid on the min .16 CPM but the traffic quality will be not as good compared to if you bid higher.

Yep, agreed. It's true the traffic quality won't be as good when you're bidding that low, but I've had tons of profitable campaigns bidding .16-.21c CPM. The key again is a good ad image.

Well good post, but I guarantee very few will do 50 ads per day. That's too much work for 99% of affiliates out there. They'll spend their time making excuses as to why what you told them would never work, (it will work if they did it), instead.

so do you use adwords to promote those things or alternative ads?
Also is it worth it to target high competition words even if the price is higher, for example:
    online dating / 2,40$ cpc / 1million searches local
your pay for every signup 5$

Is this worth doing in theory or is it better to target less competitive terms/phrases?

I know this isn't directly connected to the CPM campaign itself, but may I ask about the landing pages you're sending people to? Obviously you could have awesome CTRs but if there's little conversion, it wouldn't matter. Would you mind giving a basic overview of the format you use to move people to your offer?

        Hi

I am new...this is my maiden post and I know very little.

On the issue of landing pages/ads...how do optimize the landing pages when you are running so many different ads?

I imagine if you are constantly optimising your ad copy and your landing pages at the same time it's more difficult to understand what's working.

I recommend nailing your ad copy first. If you're stuck, spy on your competitors and see what ad copy they're using and use something similar.

Then start with direct linking. If you can break even or better, then start testing landing pages.

To see ads on POF, you need to create an account (your own profile) after that you'll be able to see the ads.

(I'm thinking about doing another post on my testing process how I decide when to cut or scale an ad... let me know!)
Hi there and thanks for a lot of great information. This is indeed very intresting for me as I am about to launch a campaign for a product on how to seduce women.
Do you have any tips on where I should go for advertising??? I have heard solo ads are a great idea but it seems difficult to find any for this niche.

My idea is to send people to a very simple squeeze page and offer a free video in exchange for their email address and then promote the product using a serie of e-mails.
What I am looking for is some type of advertising which is not too pricey and also easy to use.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions.
    Kindest regards,
    Casper

Never tried info products before, but I see a few ads for Vin Dicarlo's product (Pandora's Box). It's the "3 weird tricks" ad that you see on a lot of sites.

Word on the street is that he was making 7 figures/month with it, so those ads must be converting.

But keep this in mind: Reading an ebook and learning how to seduce girls = a lot of work.

A lot of people would rather just sign up for a dating site with girls who are already interested.

CPA dating offers are proven to convert, so why not just start with that?

        Thank you,
CPA dating offers?? Do you mean to promote adult dating sites? Such as for example passion.com?
        Cheers,

You said you would test up to 50 ads in a day...Were they in 1 single campaign and running all at the same time? or were they running in batch(10 ads at a time example)? or in different campaigns...

Also, why aren't you running your campaigns full time anymore...? If you're having much success, why not run them and take that income on top of your other projects.

oh and do you prefer DL or LP's?

Thanks Anthony. This is good info, and much of it I am sure could be used with adult dating campaigns on other traffic sources... At least I hope so, since I am currently working with CPM on tube sites as a traffic source.

You can push whichever type you want. You can take a generic dating offer and use a landing page with your own angle too. It doesn't have to be a niche specific site if you're using niche specific angles and targeting.

That is a great post by OP. Just to add here that you don't have to promote only dating offers on POF though they work the best with most marketers.

You can try out any type of offer that goes well with a dating type of crowd. In fact some of these non-dating offers see very high conversions on POF.

yes but you forget to mention you took action. Well done.

Lots of people fail cause they do 1 or 2 test and fail.

Man I test like a whore, and you really have to burn the candle at both ends.

I am ok with copy, so I have to test more, and its funny the ads you think have not edge, and will not do well, are the winners 9/10 times. Its true.

That is why with CPA testing can make or break you. The more you test, the more you will find that little gem, then you just have to upscale, and I have done this and had my first $500 day last week.

    Great thread.
Can you still do the dynamically insert {age} and {state} in POF?

If so, is there any great examples of this type of dynamic insert? Sorry, its new to me.

Also, do most people feel those types of Ads convert better?

    Thanks

    One more question.
When setting up several ads for ONE offer, you say you might create 50 odd ads.
Do you mean you set up 50 creatives under the one campaign inside POF, or create 50 seperate campaigns?

    Thanks
