Do classified ads sites make money?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum. I've been doing some research as I'm building a classifieds ads site for niche markets. Do you have any experience with these kind of sites and what's the best way to monetize them?

Thanks!

A great way to monetize it would be to charge user for bolded ads, or extra pictures in their ads. Look at what eBay/CL is doing at copy it.

Also be sure to pick a good niche with deep pockets. This will help a lot.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations! Has anyone experience with ads APIs such the ones from Indeed or Trovit? Apparently you can pull their listings straight into your site and get a commission per click or lead (not 100% sure how it works)

I would concur with Greedy, excellent points actually!

You may also find that the classifieds market is pretty much controlled by Craigslist and Gumtree, so unless you already have the traffic you are looking at 5-6 figures in advertising costs to get your name out there. But it's the competitive markets you want to go after and cut yourself a slice off i.e. where there is money floating around, otherwise if nobody has any money in your market there's not much point pursuing it ... so going after deep-pocket industries is a very wise move

Analyze the business niches involved in the paid sections of Craigslist such as Auto dealers, Various Jobs postings. Furniture dealers are also heavy marketers on there.

    Try some of these:
    - featured ads
    - advertising banners
    - Pay to post
    - Affiliates links
    - Premium membership

The wannabe classified market is saturated. The bulk of the traffic is on CL and backpage

I don't have experience with classifieds, but you mention "niche". I believe this could definitely work. Best of luck.
