Morning all,

I am Optimizing our website. We are a Furniture retailer and have a lot of products.
I have Categories for all my products of which there are a hell of a lot.
Should I be adding a Canonical URL to each product pointing to the Category URL?
Will this make the Category rank better as there are many links to the Category URL?

Thanks in advance
Jack

No, it will not make the category rank better. It might, however, ensure that your product pages never get listed on results pages!

You are thinking of things kind of backward. Who do you think is more likely to buy - someone who typed in "buy cell phone" or someone who typed in "buy iphone 12"?

The guy who typed in "buy cell phone" has no clue what he wants to buy yet. He's several steps away from making a decision and placing an order. Someone who types in "buy iphone" is a little closer. The person who types in an exact product ("buy iphone 12") is ready to buy and knows exactly what he wants, so THAT is your most important page.

I don't see the point in doing that since product pages are way different than category pages.

    Jack,

Everyone here will give you their own input whether they tried it or not.

This is something you will have to do to see what is working and what isn't.

The best answer lies in YOU doing the work and seeing your own results. Then after a few months, you will get the right answer.

Perfect suggestion, I agree as well. The best way will be to add the canonical URL to each product and see the results. After a while, you will see the results yourself and find the best answer.
    All the best.

    Thanks

As dave correctly said: "No, it will not make the category rank better. It might, however, ensure that your product pages never get listed on results pages!".

Please read what canonical urls are before making any changes.
