How do we understand who is our target audience are ?

I am looking to understand how do I know my target audience.

    What are their pain points? Why would they buy from you / consider buying from you / consider listening to you or join your list?

    If you don't know why, you need to interact with them more. Listen, watch for these and they will share them with you. When you hear or see two decision makers in your field say the same pain points in the same language, you know you have something.

    Repeat the pain point language back at them. Do not flower it up. Do not change the language. Use it as they gave it to you.

    Here is an example I have ready, which is from an Amazon review for the book Spin Selling. I have highlighted the relevant wording for you:



    Knowing this information, you could create copy/a message on video/phone outreach script that filters the audience by these concepts. Eg. if you could get in front of salespeople, and you were selling copies of Spin Selling, you'd be smart to begin with:

    Hi! If you're like me, you got into sales with absolutely zero idea of what to do or what selling meant. And now that it's months or years later, you're still wondering, "What IS sales and what am I supposed to do?" Well, if you're ready to admit, "I have no idea how to sell professionally", and you're focused on the large sale, listen up! Based on extensive research--it isn't something someone just made up in an ivory tower or pulled out of the air--the book I'm about to tell you about will change your sales life and make you a thousand times more effective!"

    You could even talk more about a background in IT, or having read Tom Hopkins' books but them not appealing to the reader.

    Then your target market will resonate with your message, and be receptive to your solution.

    If you were doing this as a phone script, you would ask questions instead of saying all of this without a breath.

    If you don't know your audience, you must interact with them...do information interviews, look at their comments in public forums, facebook groups...see how they interact. Amazon reviews are a great source of this kind of pain point language.

    Again, if you don't know your audience's pain points, you don't know your audience.

    Now as to how to choose your target market? That's another question entirely. Preferably you pick something you have experience and knowledge in, where you are at least somewhat ahead of your ideal customer.

    If you don't know what I'm talking about, google "customer avatar" and read a few articles and fill out a few worksheets.

    Use your data analytics and also get feed back from people

    And if you don't have data you have to net work and see who gravitates towards you .

    I don't know if you have a blog or a YouTube channel but those are good tools to use to drive targeted traffic and to get leads .

    Some very good advice is to start your IM in an area you already have some interest or knowledge. It is good advice because you can look in the mirror and see who and what your TARGET audience is.

    Example, a golfer might start in the golf market and niche it down from there.

    Or anyone with a hobby or an interest, it is good to build on a foundation you already have rather than starting with nothing.

    So, what interests you? Any hobbies? What would you do in your spare time if you had a lot more money? Answering these and similar questions gives you the ability to identify a potential market where understanding the audience will be easy, because you are in it.

    Then you can use Jason's "pain points" concept in his post. Make things easier for yourself, start with you being the avatar, eh?

    To understand who your audience is, you have to consider their pain point( problems they have that you hope to solve with your product ).

    Also think about things like their age, interests and what media they hang out at most.

    As others pointed out, social media is great for this. If you already have a business with some followers and clients, you can check who's following you, maybe reach out and ask questions directly. If not, look into other businesses in your niche, look at the type of people who are interacting with their posts and what they're saying. You can get a lot of insight just by looking around. Even more if you talk to people.

    If you're just getting started, it's important to understand that at times you just need to decide who you're going to target. There isn't always a perfect target audience just waiting to be discovered. Plus, if your first hunch doesn't work out, you can always pivot later.

    Twenty years ago, I launched a website to help local used car dealers sell more cars. This was before Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji existed. AutoTrader was around, but their focus was on a much larger audience. To find my target market, I made a list of used car dealers and looked for those already advertising in newspapers, AutoTrader, and other places. Some I even found on placemats at local pubs.

    Next, I investigated what these dealers were paying for advertising. Could I expect to receive a similar amount? Would they be interested in paying me to help them sell more cars? That's what I needed to find out.

    People love to talk about themselves and their businesses. I took a segment of my list and called them, explaining that I had a business idea that could help them sell more cars. I wasn't looking for money or selling anything; I just asked for a few minutes of their time to discuss my idea and see if it was viable.

    Some didn't want to talk to me, so I moved them to another list for later. Then I visited their businesses in person. I told them I was thinking about putting up a website to help them sell more cars. We discussed the cost of their ads elsewhere and whether they would be willing to pay me a similar price. Some said no, some said yes--if I could prove I could help them sell more cars. And I did.

    I built the website and started going back to the dealers. I offered them three months free to try it out. The site went from $0 to $3,000 in three months, twenty years ago, and continued to grow every month.

    Well, understanding who your target audience is, is a matter of understanding your stuff.
    • What's the experience you're providing? What are you publishing? What value are you proposing?

    From there, you'll know where to go, who to talk to, what to keep tabs on, what tools to use, how to adjust and improve and augment and enhance your strategies, methods, techniques and tactics -- You'll be able to think up a myriad of actionable things to do that's at least worth your time and energy.

    What solution are you offering?
    Who else is offering the same or similar solution?
    Go to amazon.com or wherever they sell the similar /same solution and read reviews. Make a note of all the reviews, not just the good ones.


    Find forums/ facebook pages, etc. where people talk about the problem your solution solves.

    One of the best ways to determine who your target audience is to look at who already buys your product or service. Listen to customer feedback to better understand your target audience. Use customer feedback to gather information on how current customers view and use your product. Ask them why they bought the product. This feedback gives you valuable information as you market to prospective customers.
