A Man Without Goals

"A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder." Thomas Carlyle. The rudder determines what direction the ship will go. So, without a rudder, the ship could go in any direction. Thus, a ship without a rudder is lost; a man without a goal is lost.
Without a goal, a man (or woman) has no key direction, no purpose for getting out of bed. We have our work or our schooling to go to. We join friends or families at meal time. But, a goal is that excitement, that pizzazz that makes you anxious for the day.
You and I, to be mentally and physically healthy should always set and maintain goals in many areas of our lives. Most of us want to earn more money, work out to get in better shape, or learn something new every day. If your attitude is to improve yourself, it makes sense to set goals in these areas.
I remember my football-playing friends in college. At the end of the season there was, for many of them, a huge mental and emotional drop. Many of them had had a good attitude in their studies as well as on the field. I know they had goals they were working towards; both personal and team goals. One of these goal had to be to win the next game. Even as they were striving to achieve these goals, many were also able to achieve good grades in their studies. When the season was over, the attitude of some of them changed. They no longer had goals to work for in football and going to class and studying hard lost it's importance, also.
I am not here to pick on football players. One of the great things about the game is having many people striving towards the same goals, yet each player has his own individual goals. My point is this; as long as the players had goals, even if the stated goals were just on the football field, many did well in other areas of their life. But, when they no longer had goals, their attitude became complacent and they no longer had any drive.
Goals give us something to work for. Without active goals, there is not that something extra that gives life it's excitement. If we are not actively striving to do something, not only will we achieve far less than what we are capable of; we will not have the excitement in our lives that comes when we are pursuing a goal.
In my earn more spend more group blog, I devote not just one post, but an entire section to goals. I invite you to visit http://www.earnmorespendmoregroup.com/goals/. One of the posts, Charles is about a young boy who had a goal. If you want to achieve your goal, and pursue it like Charles pursued his goal; nothing can stop you.
Without goals, one is lost. Goals are necessary in achieving maximum performance in any field. And if you want excitement, pizzazz, and a reason to get out of bed in the morning; SET GOALS!
