What are you here to sell me?

A guy walks into a local business. The owner is tired, has had it up to here with nasty customer, telemarketers, and uninvited salesmen.
"What are you here to sell me?" asks the business owner.
"I don't know yet" shoots back the salesman.
Stunned the business owner fumbles for a few words ... "what do you mean you don't know .. .what type of salesman are you?"
A good one, now tell me about your business, your problems and then we'll talk about solving them.
Instead of selling someone something, why not find out what they need first.
Market first, product second.
Talk with a business or a person, find out their most pressing problem and then figure out how to solve it.
My secret of selling is this - find out what the person wants and help them get it.
Seriously, that is it.
You need more traffic - not a problem
You need better SEO - sure
You need a total website design and autoresponder - you bet.
I would of never gotten any of these jobs without first finding out what their problem was.
So first find out what the market needs, how much they are willing to pay for it, and then go to work making it.
Simple and profitable.

- Hi Tim,
Great post, I like it. I guess one of the ways to find out what people are hurting for is through forums and Yahoo answers.
And the other thing about being a great salesman is having the patience to wait for the business to come to you. In other words let the money chase you!
regards
