I am scared of sharks. Seriously I make myself watch Shark week on tv but I won't go into any body of water that I can't see the bottom of. What does sharks have to do with marketing ... lots.

Continuing our discussions about getting prospects from an earlier blog. I want you to think of yourself as a shark. Stick with me for a moment - the cough meds have me buzzing but I still think this is a great point.

By thinking of yourself as a shark I mean I want you to have the drive, the determination, and the killer instinct of a shark.

What does that mean in marketing terms? It means I want you to pick out your targets and surround them like their is a blood in the water.

In order to do that you have to be persistent. You don't stop with a single letter, or a postcard, or a single call. No you attack them with as many tools and as many ways as possible.

Consider a good friend of mine. He met a girl in college that 10 minutes after he met her he told everyone he was going to marry her. We laughed because this girl was WAY out of his league. Seriously he was a 4, she was a solid 9 to 10. But he didn't listen to us.

Every single day he asked her out. For two weeks she turned him down everyday. Then he resorted to gives, every day for an entire week he had flowers delivered to her.

Still nothing. So then he started writing her letters everyday. About week 7 she finally said enough already. I'll go on ONE date with you if you'll stop all of this.

They went on a date and a year later they were married. I had the chance to ask her a couple of weeks ago why she married him when she could of done so much better.

Her answer - he was persistent and she knew that if he went to all of that trouble to just get a date with her, he would be a great provider for their family.

So stop thinking that one letter or a single news release is action. It is but it isn't. Be a shark, smell the blood, release everything you can on every client you want, do whatever it takes (legally) to get your client to notice you.

Great reminder of the basics of marketing. I know from other industries in which I've worked that NO ONE expects to get many sales from their first promotion...but by the 6th to 8th one you better have the sales phones staffed!
