A Note To Copywriters And Those Who Want To Be

This comes from Brian Kurtz
who hired the legends we know of today...

like Eugene M. Schwartz and Gary Bencivenga.

He studied the personal traits that set them apart.

Any tradesman-like can hack together a bunch of words
in a readable format.

We aren't talking about this.

Brian is talking about the thinking that goes in before a word is written.

Listen here as to what he says...

  • In my opinion, lists like this are worthless to the average wannabe copywriter.

It's like telling some Joe Schmo on a high school football team, if you do these seven things, you'll get drafted by the New England Patriots someday.
  • Thank you. Really useful tips. If someone say it to me when i just start doing this it would be much easier for me to write.
  • I so hate bein' sucked into a Nirvana Panorama bustin' out on 7 THINGS only to get smacked in the tits by TOTAL VOID CENTRAL.

    Not yr best shot, Macksiepops.

tbh we all gotta configure our words smarto always, speshly if we don't wanna end up with sumthin' we don't want from no takeout joint CONJURED SPECTACULARLY before our eyes as we endeavor to meander home loveless an' shoeless.

"Hey, drunk lady -- our burgers are SO NOT HARD AS LEATHER!"

"Yeah, they so goddamn ARE. *hic* So switch out the relish for a coupla elastic frickin' bands so I can walk home without bleedin' my feets to death, K/"
  • There is no enough information for the beginners who want to be a copywriter. Please share more information about this.

  • Copywriting is just as much understanding the psychology of your target market as it is your understanding of your industry. Copywriting is about influencing and the best way to influence people is to talk about what they want.

Let's take a landing page headline for example. Which headline will perform better?

"Sign up to my weekly newsletter to keep up with all of the copywriting trends."

    or

"Receive Your FREE PDF of 101 Trigger Words to Use in Your Email Headlines to Increase Your Open Rate By 67%"

The first headline is vague and focuses on what the copywriter wants you to do. The second headline is more specific about what the reader is going to get if they sign up to the newsletter, without even mentioning the newsletter. So it is focused on what the reader wants.

You also have to consider who you are talking to. What words do your target market use? What keeps them up at night? Where do they hang out? How does your product or service solve their problems? Plus, what benefits are they looking for?

You're selling benefits and desired emotions, not products and services. Readers need to understand this on a subconscious level.

The deeper you understand your target audience, the easier it will be for you to create your copy.

Your copy must appeal to your reader's emotions.

It sounds creepy, but you have to intimately know who you are selling to. If you don't, influencing them is going to be extremely difficult.

    • You've got the right idea but your headline could use some work.

      1. It's not pithy.
      2. More profits is stronger than increased open rates.

  • There's plenty of room ( and money) available for B level copywriters. Why spend your time vying to compete with A-listers?
