Edgy Headlines - Timeless Weapons?

First, what I mean by edgy is "controversial, provocative, shocking, deeply intriguing."

So just like most will be inclined to slow down and look at an accident, could it also be said that the market as a whole will eagerly respond to edgy headlines that relate to them (in the case of the accident gawkers, human mortality)?

I ask this question because I think it's useful to learn and apply rules that are universally effective.

    Sup CopyAcolyte,

Yea, Edgy Headlines will get you attention oftentimes, just like a car accident, as you said... and they have their place. BUT, it depends really what you're offering.

Do be careful not to make them offensive if you're offering a very professional service or product.

on the other hand, people ask me how to get higher converting banner/text ads, and this is one way to do it.

Hope that helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions on the topic.

Edgy headlines have their place because online users will automatically click on anything that immediately grabs their attention. As said in the previous post, however, be careful not to offend conservative online users who might find your text offensive or shocking instead of attention-grabbing.

There is a fine line between grabbing a legitimate prospect and just shocking any reader. John Carleton walks that line better than anybody. His "One legged Golfer" headline is a classic.

Headlines that shock your prospect AND include a big benefit are good, because they get him to continue reading.

      Here's one of my favorites...

"How A Stuttering Child, Traumatized by His Own Mother's Murder...
Discovered the 'Secret Formula' to Achieving Nearly Any Goal!"

Edgy headlines are the best way to get anyone's attention...but like everyone above says, there's always a fine line between what's considered acceptable and what's offensive...making sure that you don't over-step is the hard part...the shocking part is easier to come up with...You have to shock, get their attention, and then turn the message into something relevant and useful for it to be truly effective.

Alex, that headline would totally put me off right from the get-go but I'd still want to read it. I'm not saying that I would buy from it because of the headline but it would definitely grab my interest.

The purpose of a headline is to get the reader's attention and get him reading the ad. That's it.
