To the concerns of those who are interested in forming a Peer Group. To be honest, I'm presentlyinthe process of creating my website for my freelance copywriting business. I've completed courses from AWAI: Accelerrated Program for Six Figure copywriting, the Masters Program for Six Figure Copywriting. I've read numerous books including "Breakthrough Advertising" by Gene Schwartz just to name a few. I've also done a few Spec- Assignments. I just want to form this Peer Group so that we can help each other create better copy. Maybe I should try cnd connect with newbees such as myself...But I guarantee you that I'm full of new ideas and despite my lack of experience...I believe I can be a help not a henderance to a Peer Group. If anyone is still interested, Please let me know so we can begin setting it up. 4 to 5 members is all that's needed.

Having a peer group is a good idea.

It would be much better if one member is leagues above the rest, to serve as the "guiding light" of the bunch.

The downside of a peer group that consist of people on the same level is that growth won't be as effective.

Although lots of knowledge and input will be shared, having a veteran would make it tons better.

But I doubt any pro copywriter would want to mentor someone for free, or without favors.

But then again, there are always some who are willing to give with a kind heart, and hoping that the students won't just bail out.

Your persistence in forming a peer group is admirable; it shows you really want to learn more than what you already know, which is good.

I'm interested in this peer group of yours, but it would be tons better if we had a mentor.

Hmmm, let me put this mildly.

I don't care what courses you've taken; you haven't absorbed them. You're not ready for a career in copywriting. In fact, you're not ready to write an 8th grade English paper.

Would you be a (sic) henderence to a peer group? Absolutely. Like a 2,000lb anchor on a 10 meter sloop.

Bruce is pretty harsh, but I mean, look under his name. You dig? But he's right.

The courses you've taken, and the fact that you've written some copy, aren't very appealing to copywriters. We've all taken tons and tons of courses, read tons of books, and wrote tons of copy.

There are other more important things you need to focus on at the moment.

  • Melee- Peer groups are great but I don't think that is what you need right now. It feels a little like you are the grad student that doesn't want to leave college.

You say you have a lot of ideas. Cool, get them out in the marketplace and write the copy for them. Or write some copy for free for some local businesses. Or put something on E-Bay and write the copy for that. You have enough training to get started.

When I was learning how to write copy, I was fortunate to have a friend who was also learning at the same time. We were both eager and motivated. We shared the concepts and tactics we were learning with each other, and it was a very beneficial experience for both of us.

Our careers went in different directions. He became successful selling info products (if I mentioned his name, many here would recognize it), and I wrote copy for clients.

We're still friends, and to this day, we still share copywriting ideas with each other. Just the other day, we were talking about a list of 15 conversion boosters he compiled from his successful promotions.

Don't let the negative Neds deter you. You're on the right track.

I bet your friend also worked his ass off - something the OP clearly hasn't done, given the way he writes.

Nothing will have veteran copywriters scoffing quicker than a guy who hasn't put in the necessary hard work.

I help a lot of up-and-coming copywriters. I wouldn't touch the OP with a ten foot pole, because he's clearly not ready to work/learn.

Bruce is right. Reading a few books doesn't mean squat. Prove you've actually worked to absorb what you've read, and you might actually have some takers.

Encouragement is great... but IMHO, it's reserved for people who actually deserve it. And given the OPs post (which is all any of us have to go on, unless you know him personally), I don't believe he does.

Always looking for badass direct-response copywriters. PM me if we don't know each other and you're looking for work.

Warriors here might have been harsh. But they do have a point.

All those courses and programs, and yet you make basic spelling errors!

Peer groups can come later (which is not a bad idea btw). But first you might want to practice the craft. And apply what you have learned from those courses and books.... even when writing a simple thread as this one.

Ok - we all make typo's - but that's not your real problem.

It's the structure of the copy on your "post" that proves you need to do a lot more work.

It's all over the place. It doesn't flow. The words bump and jar. You didn't bother to put any copywriting tech into it. And never, ever knock out 8 line paragraphs.

Apart from the typo there were other mistakes.

"Just to name a few" - you didn't - you named one.

Not exactly a sin, but you need to check and edit your stuff.

Now can you see why copywriting takes such a massive individual effort?

And why you'll get slammed if your copy is just lazy?

To start, work on your own - and iron out all the glitches (it saves you the embarrassment and humiliation - you'll feel so much happier without that).

And don't despair, you've hopefully got the two critical things every copywriter needs - enthusiasm and passion.

But before you create a "group" do what VL did - find a pal and work with them.

      You'll progress much faster.

I know you're thinking a "group" would be good - you can chat, bounce ideas around, have fun, try and learn from each other etc.

But you'll need (to get the real benefits) - a mentor to spearhead your band of writers.

It'll be a tough call to get a "free" one.

So, do what we ALL had to do - study, study and study... and practice, practice and practice.

When you've done that - then give the group thing some more thought.

      Steve

P.S. It takes at least 3 intensive readings of "Breakthrough Advertising" before it sinks in.
