Just A Suggestion
My first day. A lady came in and asked to try on a style she saw in the window.
"Be right back!" I said, in that chipper way you do on the first day of the job, before it sinks in that you are selling shoes at the mall.
The manager stopped me as I headed back out.
"Here, take this box, and this one, and this one, and this one. Suggest these styles to her." He piled the boxes so high I had to peek around them to see where I was going.
I said eloquently, "Uh, why? She wants these."
"Because she likes you, she like shoes, and she will buy them from you."
OK, but it didn't seem to make sense.
Why would you buy FIVE pairs of shoes?
See, as a guy, I only buy one pair of shoes at a time. It didn't occur to me that women buy many, many pairs of shoes.
I spread the shoes out in front of her. Since I didn't know jack about the shoes, I just started making stuff up. "While you are here, ma'am, I wanted to show you this pair that just came in. These would be great on a nice date out on the town. And this pair would be perfect for weekend stuff."
OK, the pitch sucked. I was amazed, though, when she bought all five pairs!
You know what my commission on that was? Had to be four or five dollars! haha
Don't forget to suggest other things your prospect may like.
AWAI does this all the time.
Dave Dee (Dan Kennedy's company) just sent out an email about how he noticed the Williams-Sonoma staff is excellent at suggestive selling:
"Did you see the great specials we are having today
like the pie-maker that is 50% off or the table top
sale in the back?"
Make sure you suggest extra products or services with every sale. You never know who will buy all five boxes.
