The Best Way to Overcome Writer's Block

Dear Fellow Copywriter:

Imagine the following scenario...

To your delight, a big five-figure project unexpectedly lands on your desk.
You receive full payment upfront, which fills your heart with unbridled joy and enthusiasm. You inform all your loved ones and friends about the lucrative business deal and even open up a bottle of champagne.
You feel like the world is full of possibilities...There is nothing you CANNOT accomplish. The sky is a limit! Even the swine flu is not going to stop you.

Finally, you approach your computer. You turn it on with a cheerful grin on your face . Then something terrible happens, and the world of happiness starts slowly disappearing into nowhere.

You feel stuck...You cannot find the right words to express yourself. Your mind is void of any creative ideas, thoughts or inspiration. The world starts closing in on you from all sides and you start to panic, while the client is waiting for the final draft with an unabated breath. She is expecting nothing short of masterpiece. And you cannot deliver!
You see all your hopes, joy and career prospects slowly slip away...
All of a sudden you notice a huge and scary Monster quietly sneaking in on you though the back door, ready to grab you by the neck and choke you to death. This Monster has been preying on writers since the beginning of time. He even has a name--Writers Block! This Monster has no mercy. We are all his potential victims. No one is safe!

Don't be scared. Here is the good news.
We can overpower the Monster and send him scurrying back to the woods, where he resides in a small shabby cabin by the lake.

Wanna know how? I have a simple strategy for you. It works like a charm.

Stop trying too hard! That's right.
If you are stuck for the perfect phrase and nothing comes to mind, stop demanding it. You will make a bad situation worse! What I do sometimes is imagine someone appearing in my doorway and asking me: "What are you trying to say?"
Then I would explain to my "imaginary visitor" what I am trying to say. You know what happens? When I verbalize it as if responding to a question, the most important facts usually come through. Then I grab the paper and jot it down without worrying about grammar, etc. Then I type it up, refine or modify it. Just getting the essence of what you need and want to say on paper is getting you half way there. Then you can build on that and eventually come up with a "masterpiece" that your client is expecting you to deliver.

Oh, wait...Where is the Monster? Anyone seen Writers Block??
I think he is back in the woods, where he belongs. Good riddance. I am no longer afraid of him. Neither should you!

One way of beating writer's block is to just write! Just sit down, put pen to paper and write something. Anything. And lots of it. Do not worry about editing now, you can do that later. Even if most of what you write is useless, you will get something down you can use. And that's a whole lot more than if you sit there wondering how to start.

Agreed. I just use stream of consciousness writing to lay the foundation. I even include all of my mental side notes ("this is stupid", "I still don't understand what dpi means", "I want a sandwich") because it helps to take that element of fear out.

Naturally, I clean it up before I submit to a client. Although, a few might be wondering why I am talking about food in the middle of a life insurance article

Writers block sucks, it can strike any writer at anytime. One of my idols Mr. Joe Sugarman said to just write, pour all your emotions into your copy. Write as freely as possible and don't worry at all about being perfect.

Us trying to be perfect creates this writers block. Write anything that pops into your head and -- Then do the editing after all the creative juices and emotions have flown into your copy.

    Cheers,

Joe's tactic helps me tremendously. Sometimes, I sit back, feeling the shopping experience in my mind, and start typing with my eyes closed. Feeling and writing freely.

EFT also works to quickly get you unstuck and back on track, if you just can't bring yourself to sit down and write.

    One more suggestion:

I suggest you get your hands on Julia Cameron's book
    "The Right to Write".

It's probably one of the best and most inspirational books for
writers. Even though it is mostly targeted towards fiction writers,
many copywriters would benefit significantly from her
    wise insights and inspirational quotes.
She also talks about the Writer's Block and ways to overcome it.

Many writers are trying to come up with a perfect sentence
or a perfect story right away. Just start writing! Start typing!
Start putting words on paper! Don't worry too much about the outcome.
As soon as you start typing, good ideas will start "entering" your mind,
    one after another.
You will have enough time to do the editing later on.

    Get the book now!

What I do when I get writer's block and I can't get past it, is to leave my computer entirely and do something else. I might watch a video and have a cup of coffee or go plant some flowers or squeeze my dog. What you do doesn't really matter...just get away.

BUT, don't turn off your mind...just let it wander with you and a thought or the perfect word will slide into your mind and you will be back on track. This works so well for me that, often, I never get far from the computer before I start being flooded with new ideas or phrasing.

Try it. You've got only writer's block to lose and it doesn't cost anything.

Sometimes, all you have to do is get out of the house.
I am fortunate enough to live by the beach. We have a
nice and long boardwalk and it always stimulates my thinking.
Walking usually gets my creative juices flowing.
It might do the same to you.

If you don't have the beach, the ocean and the boardwalk
in your area, you may go to the park or walk across the bridge.

Maybe you just have to get your
mind off the project for a while. Call one of your friends,
get together for a cup of coffee or go to a party.
When you get back to work, your mind will function more
effectively. But I know for sure that walking is the
        antidote to Writers Block.

Here's three little points on this...

First, If you've done you're research and preparation properly, your mind should be swelling with tons of things you can put down on a blank page.

Next, remember, your first draft is just that. Write without restraint. Then go back and edit the crap out of that sucker.

I reckon a lot of the all-star copywriters will tell you research and editing typically take a lot longer than the actual writing. I've read that often enough. Just can't remember where exactly.

Lastly, if you've got writer's block move onto something a bit easier like the guarantee, product bullet points, apples to oranges price comparison, or whatever it is you find easier to crank out than where you're stuck. You can at least make it a productive day.

    Colm

P.S. Ooh, and don't forget about sifting through your swipe file, a great way to kick writer's block in its butt!

I had been visiting this guy regularly and he often makes me wonder after he leaves.

After getting blocked for a while, I prefer to take simplify the article by just visualizing that I am explaining this stuff to a novice and then start to create the words and sentences normally form.

This is a nice article which I had read first and this is my first comment.

    Thanking u.

      You are very welcome, Nirvana.
I hope some of our suggestions will help you
ublock the Writers Block, and send the Monster
      where he belongs.
If you follow some of the steps outlined above, you
have no reason to be afraid of the Monster.

I like the gun to the head method. I visualise someone pointing a gun at my head and saying "If you don't start writing now you're dead!". I then just try to write anything that comes into mind, whether its good or not. After a few minutes it starts to feel easier and the ideas start coming to me.
