Open to any/all advice

As we move into 2014, I find myself finally looking to create an income that will provide the type of lifestyle I want for myself and my family. I have also found that writing is my gift and love.

What I have not found yet is an income from this writing that doesn't require me to kill myself for enough money to barely pay the rent and keep the lights on.

So, going into the next year, I have come to the conclusion that I want to accomplish a few different things, and one of these goals is to start a career as a copywriter.

I am far from an expert, but I do believe that I have the ability to pain a picture in the minds of my readers with my words. I know I am a great article and content writer already, and I also understand that copywriting is not the same as article or content writing.

So, here I am asking for advice. Here is what I believe already, but I am open to any and all advice anyone can offer me.

1. Copywriting has a structure to it. It requires the ability to understand the emotional needs of the market I am communicating with. It also requires the ability to make a promise, paint a picture of how that promise will help the person reading it, back that promise with credibility, and make an offer that demands people to take action right now.

2. I should most likely target specific niches and markets instead of everyone out there.

3. I should focus on a few specific products such as email/autoresponder marketing, product descriptions, landing pages, sales copy et.....

4. I need a website marketing my services that I can drive people to as well as other known marketing strategies including my own autoresponder that allows me to capture leads etc....

5. I have to create examples that showcase the best of my copywriting ability.

If you have anything to offer please don't hesitate. I would greatly appreciate it.

I would prefer people who already have a track record of success with copywriting.

My goal is to earn my first six figure income during 2014 with my goal being $250,000 as a minimum.

I am also willing to create copy or emails for people on the forum here for only a couple hundred dollars. I would be willing to write it before payment and am willing to skip payment if you aren't 100% satisfied with what I create.

I do ask that if I create copy for such a huge discount compared to what copywriting is worth, that you allow me to use a pdf version or photo of the copy on my website once I have created it in order to showcase my skills in order to help generate sales.

I look forward to hearing from you and learning more from each of you.

Dwayne

Copywriting is only 'worth' the results that it gets. So you might have a hard time getting people on here to pay you a couple hundred dollars when you've got zero experience. There are people here who offer their services for even cheaper, and they have proven results to show.

My advice is to start studying up on the subject. There are some really awesome resources here in this forum that can help get you up to speed. And start putting together a portfolio... you can write sample pages without needing to be hired for a job.

I appreciate the help. I have thought about simply creating copy without getting paid for it just to have in my portfolio, and I have also seen those offers on the forum.

I have also devoured much of the information provided on the forum as well. I simply figured it couldn't hurt to offer the services for a minimal fee. I figured it would allow me to be of service to someone while possibly receiving some compensation for my time. After all, I am willing to practically give it away, but I do see your point of view.

I simply figured "why not give someone useful sales copy while also creating something for my portfolio."

In all honesty, I am more concerned with creating a solid foundation as I move into 2014 than I am about earning a few dollars here for copy. I have gained so much from this website that I would like to give back in some manner. My problem, and the reason I don't have many posts even though I have been a member for years, is that I don't have anything new to offer the forum other than my ability to write. There is already so much covered here that I have nothing that isn't covered to offer other than my time and energy.

Regardless, I am much more interested in any guidance and help than I am in actually putting money in my pocket. I just don't have 20 hours to spend on creating a killer sales page for free because what I do currently earn from writing demands most of my work week and time just to provide a living. I do alright, nothing to brag about, but enough to create enough cashflow for me to start moving into this area of writing in order to take my income and writing to the next level.

And as this all proves, I am a bit long winded which should work well for copywriting considering the length of almost every sales page I have personally seen on the internet! haha

Thank you for the input though, I really am grateful.

  • One path to get to $250,000 long term is to make your own products and market them with your copywriting.

To get to six figures next year--you can do it with content writing alone if you want--just market to PWM Players with money: Large corporations and cash-rich medium-sized businesses.

A good way to learn copywriting is with a mentor. Many here offer mentoring.

What does PWM stand for? That's a term I haven't heard of yet.

i do intend to create my own products because I do know that long term that is one of the most profitable ways for me to create a long term income. However, I need to make a shift as time goes on from work that I get paid for once to work that pays me over and over again. I have to find a balance between paying the bills now as I work toward building a solid foundation that pays me much more long term.

Awesome, thank you. I do plan on focusing on PWM as I understand that good copy can demand upwards of several thousand dollars. I am grateful for teaching me a new term, thank you.

  • Dwayne,

Hopefully the interweb will be good to you.

And many will flock to your site and buy the services.

    If by chance they don't.

    Don't panic.

Because just about every "bricks and mortar" business needs a good copywriter.

They are easily reached by sales letters, phone calls or networking. You can even wander in and talk to them.

And you'll never, ever run out of prospects.

Steve you rock. Thank you. As soon as I read your post I instantly had images of creating physical letters to send to businesses as well as myself on the phone in order to gather leads for my sales funnel.

  • This can be a problem when copywriters go completely virtual. They don't recognise paper and ink (lol).

Now for many, the very thought of speaking to potential clients on the dog and bone (telephone) sends agonising shockwaves through the central nervous system.

Even if they wanted to, they couldn't make the call because their hands are shaking too much and their voice is trembling.

    No problem.

Because there is no need to follow up on the sales letters (many will disagree and say you should) but if the "pitch" is good, and it should be, the good people will call you.

No need to hassle them on the phone.

I don't mind picking up the phone. Have done sales and all types of calling before. My first strategy would probably be a direct mail campaign that would drive them to my website combining the best of both on and offline marketing. Especially with the current mail programs that would allow me to send full booklets for some where around 17 cents each

  • Sounds like a good strategy. Don't just drive them to the site let them phone you as well.

(I don't mind speaking on the phone, but I never follow up on any promo's. A client once asked me why I didn't and I said "Being a copywriter, the copy has to get the response")

I would agree that if I do my job properly I shouldn't have to follow up. At this point in my life I am tired of struggling financially. Don't have much in terms of money but what I lack in money I make up for in drive, focus, and motivation. I am willing to do what I must to make it happen. Even if I fall short of my quarter million goal I'll still be much better off than I have ever been. Plus I'll position myself to hit the goal in 2015. What am I saying. Those who say I can't hit a quarter mill don't know what they are saying. And yes I understand there is a ton of work to accomplish that goal but it only requires $5000 a week which isn't unrealistic as a great copywriter which I will be.

  • Dwayne,

Can I give you a copywriting tip? Never write paragraphs more than 4-5 lines long. Split them up, because it's easier to read. And if the good people don't read your stuff they won't respond. There are probably tens of thousands of outstanding sales pitches on the web and in print that have not and never will be read. It is just too much effort. Always make it easy for your audience to read your words. Don't make them work to do it. A few people might stagger through it all. But most won't bother. And all the effort you put into the writing is in vain. Also you are more likely to ramble, lose track and veer off on different tangents. You wonder why on earth didn't people respond? Was it the offer? Was it the price? Is it the words? All this is important but you'll never know the reason because very few waded through the epic masterpiece. And you'll lose buckets of money. If the piece is good, preferably really good and targeted to the right people and they do read it chances are the response will be good. And the money pours in. Obviously the better it is the more money they'll be.

Steve you can give me all the tips you want. If I am anything it is humble enough to know that god gave me two ears and one mouth for a reason. Also that if I knew everything I would already be rich fit and happy.

That was a run on paragraph though because I did it on my phone. I have learned that the phone isn't the best place to write from but works great when not at the PC.

    My email is degcommunications@gmail.com

I am not saying that I have all the answers but as with most people my biggest question is how to find the clients.

I understand that strong copy and a sales letter will do most of the work for me is used properly. But should I focus on one specific group such as lawyers etc... Or how should I go about finding those people with money. Especially those that are ready willing able and in need of my services right now.

Especially with very little to no money since that is where I am starting. But please send it over. I want to learn as much as I can about all aspects of the art including exactly how to write strong copy that has people practically begging myself and my clients to take their money.

I really need a solution like yesterday. Especially considering the fact that I believe I may have spent all week writing nearly $500 worth of articles and think I probably got ripped off.
