According to CBS News, marijuana is projected to grow from a $2.5 billion/yr industry to $10 billion in the next few years in the USA. Has anyone been approached to write for clients in this business?

    Very interesting, if you should encounter ''inspiration probs'' you can always read some ''high'' quality information (what's in a word ) in a book by Ed Rosenthal or on his blog.

      I know one copywriter who's done a few projects in that market. We talked a few days ago about one of his clients who has several information products about setting up legal grow operations (everything from the permitting and licensing process to how to actually grow the stuff), and is apparently doing insane numbers primarily through forum marketing.

      He said there's definitely a good buck in the niche, but even now, you have to have all your legal ducks in a row, disclaimers up the wa-zoo, and a way to get quality traffic, which apparently isn't as easy to come by due to the controversial nature of the market in general.

      Still, as the market grows, the need for strong copywriting is definitely going to be there and there will be A LOT of money to be made.

        Hmmm, this sounds like it could potentially be a project of the sort Mark P suggested in his post right here as a way to improve skills and generate an attention-getting portfolio:

        Create your own product and then write hot copy to sell it

        Why wait till I find a customer if I can use it as my demo piece. Except for the darn legal stuff that might come with the territory, and the challenges of advertising it. Still, something to think about.

        And to add a bit on what you are saying, someone can rent a list in colorado of people who have purchased a joint product and sell a weed based cream...

          The info products have already been dominated since I started working with a grow light company about 4-5 years ago.

          He used to sell just lights, his own brand and I was able to convince him to put together a grow kit to sell too, with monthly delivery of nutrients for recurring income. The grow kit included a basic light, tent, a fan and nutrients... Boosted his revenue by 50% with the back end monthly delivery.

          Back in 2011 I worked with another company, a guy that worked at Apple pretty high up, he decided to start a "delivery" business for medicinal marijuana. He did pretty well until the beginning of last year, and got out of the business.

          The industry has a lot of areas with promise. Grow lights are my favorite, probably since that was one of my first clients and has remained with me since. The awesome thing about grow lights, is that it isn't just for marijuana, it's any indoor growing.

          You could do grow lights, tents, nutrients, accessories for smoking to consumers, even recipe books for edibles. Commercial Grow Room Consultants will be an in demand area here pretty soon.

          The bottom line is, people don't need to be convinced to smoke weed whether it's for medicinal use or recreational. Growers need to be convinced that your grow light is more dependable, maybe more efficient by not having a huge heat signature, saving them on cooling costs, can produce a higher yield than your competitors, etc.

          Awesome industry for sure. I'm sure there is plenty money of to be made, but from my point of view the money for us(copywriters, designers, marketers, etc.) is to be made on the business end, not so much on the consumer end. That could change as legalization changes across the US, heck, there could eventually be pot cigarettes sold at gas stations.

    Thanks for the feedback. Some are saying the demand right now is off the charts, and they can barely keep up. Colorado has blown their expected revenue out of the water, for example.

    It seems like the best weed-related copywriting markets would be for stuff like grow-kits and "how to grow your own weed" info products.

    As for marijuana itself, I suspect that in most places where it's legal, it'll just be sold like cigarettes in stores.

    I did some direct mailers for a client in California a few years ago. Nailing the subculture's language and values seems to be a big deal in that niche.
