What would a "Copywriting Club" look like?

Freelance copywriting can be a lonely business, especially for beginners. But with the internet, skype, Google hangouts, etc., it doesn’t have to be.

Some freelancers suggest teaming up with “goal buddies” for productivity’s sake . . . to have someone else to account to if you’re inclined to cut yourself too much slack.

With that in mind, I’m considering what shape an online “Copywriting Club” might take.

I’m not close to starting one yet. Right now I’m just mulling over the idea, and trying to sort out the benefits it might offer participants, as well as what downsides there might be. I would appreciate any ideas and insights you care to contribute.

If I did start it, it would be free, and membership would be selective, based on the review and input of other members.
  • Of course, there would be the “goal buddy” aspect. Participants ante up a list of goals for the day or week or whatever, then account for them in a weekly or biweekly skype or google circles meeting..
  • There would also be a study group, in which we all read (or reread) the same book on copywriting. Then review it (or quiz each other), chapter by chapter, in the meetings.
  • There might also be reviews of our pitches for new business (should anyone request one). Of course, anyone can get that in a public forum like this one, but the advantage of doing it on a private site (or via just reading it aloud during a meeting) is that the review is not indexed by Google. Nor would it be seen (and reviewed) by every tom, dick, and harry.
  • There could be practice sessions for cold call pitches and review of the scripts.
  • There might be a library, where every free PDF resource we can find on the web gets posted (eg. Scientific Advertising. Sure it’s available all over, but hey, why not in our library?)
  • There could be website review, critiquing for style and look and typos.
  • There could be tech support between members. I personally am reasonably good with CSS and dabble in javascript and php enough to finagle solutions. I built a pretty impressive child theme from the standard “Twenty-twelve” wordpress site. Maybe others have technical skills they could share.
  • There could be “guest speakers” at the weekly meeting. Maybe a few of the expert writers from this forum?
What it wouldn’t be --
  • There would be no talk about specific clients and no review of work done for clients.
  • There would be no selling stuff to each other at all. This wouldn’t be for anyone’s profit . . . just for the professional growth and support of participants.
  • It wouldn’t be large. Just a few determined individuals (8 at most) with real talent and insight who are on a personal jihad to get rich via copywriting. Otherwise the meeting might take too long.

I guess it would be a lot like the forum here, except more private, more exclusive, more regular, and more personal, using Google meetings via webcam. I would also float the idea on another forum where I’m a member to bring in interested parties.

Of course, this is just an intellectual exercise right now, but . . . what else might such a “private club” offer? Any ideas?

Anyone see any value in such a thing? What would the downsides be?

You may also consider doing some market research on the copywriting forum.
You know, find out what copywriters want and then give it to them.

  • Just keep building your skype contact list.

Don't just add clients, add other copywriters.

Share articles and stuff you found to start conversations.

Eventually you'll have lots of people to bounce ideas off of.

So let's talk practicality right now.

Blunt? Don't know who you are, don't care. Who are you? Why do I want to be in your "club" (which sounds more like a mastermind in fact)? Are you just using this forum as an idea incubator, or do you plan to actually participate?

This forum, as mentioned above, is a great example of a virtual club that already exists. Each of us has posted things that make us look like assholes. Each of us has eaten a lot more shoe than we care to admit. Each of us has had winners and losers and SKIN in the game.

And frankly a lot of the stuff in your "club" sounds like work. I get paid to work. I limit my replies here to things I'm passionate about or things that really grab my attention. Otherwise, I've got work to do.

Basically, it sounds like a group a lot of beginners would hang out in. All giving each other regurgitated advice they've heard about but haven't tried. What's in it for the skilled copywriters you really want to attract? Or are you a club about trying to reinvent the wheel?

That's what I get paid to do, man LOL.

Call it a bad habit if you want. I prefer brutal honesty.

Thank you everyone for your answers.

This wasn't intended to be a business venture, just an expansion of the "goal buddies" theme. Something free for interested (and qualified) writers.

It would be different from this forum in that it would be more private, more personal, and more of a study group for people who could use that kind of support.

Judging from the lack of interest here, however, maybe there's not much value in such a thing for copywriters. Oh well... Carry on!
