Hey Magento community,

More generally, am looking for a powerful shipping solution.

More specifically I need a powerful shipping solution with the following features:
1. re-calculate/overwrite shipping rates set by shipping providers
2. automate the process of customer location detection

    That's a business question, what are you trying to do because there are 100s of ways to achieve the same thing. Do you want fixed shipping costs and build the variable in to the pricing, do you want per country shipping with import duties. Almost all platforms, including Magento, can't handle these complex scenarios without constant data loads, so you need to be specific what you actually want to do.

    For Magento shipping calculations we use Shipping Table Rates by Amnasty. Highly recommended and very flexible. There are other extensions that do different things if you can be more specific.

    Regarding "automate the process of customer location detection" what does this mean?

    I recommend you to check this Shipping Suite Magento Extension.

    We have used it for our store and it good job in identifying customers' location and recalculating shipping rates set by local shipping providers.

        Used shipping solutions from amasty and webshoppapps. Stick to shipping suite from magworx now. They provided me with the best support and this ext does exactly what my customers require in most cases.
        The most important advantage of this module is that it combines zones functionality + rules. All other extensions do these things separately.
