I am sick of Hostgator

Hi all,

Anyone having bad experience with hostgator??

I wanted to upgrade my account and I was promptly told that they don't offer any discounts to existing customers? They will only offer discount to a new customer, whats that telling about how they treat existing customers?

Another instance, I wanted to to block all ip id's accessing my hosting account except mine, the answer... no way , you need to have a dedicated server for that.

Wanted to some basic info on the online chat, the guy said he had no idea what I was talking about I need to email them, this happened three times.

All in all, I am convinced that its better not to put all your eggs in one basket.

Anybody has any suggestions for other provider who offer multiple c panel hosting?

Thanks heaps

Melvin

  • Hmmm...

I absolutely love HostGator. The online chat always answers all of my questions with no issue.

Not offering discounts to existing customers is a bit weird, however, I wouldn't know because I usually just pay the full price. You probably wouldn't be saving much anyways.

The reason they don't allow you to block IP's to your Control Panel is because you are on a shared server and you do need a dedicated server for this to be possible.

I have heard good things about BlueHost.com, but I have never used them personally.

    Good luck!

  • Well, if you need a dedicated server for that blocking IP issue, what's the problem with that? You are getting hosting a very cheap price with hostgator, so if you want more advanced stuff, then you pay more. Isn't that the way the world works?
  • Hi Melvin

Not trying to defend HostGator, but my experience with them has actually been quite pleasant. I've used the online chat a few times and found them to be quite helpful and informed. But I suppose it depends upon the technician who you get when you call.

I'm afraid I don't have any other hosting recommendation for you, but one thing I wanted to note was that your request to block IP addresses other than your own can't easily be done on a shared hosting plan. You share your IP address with dozens or even hundreds of other users, so blocking IP addresses would affect all of them. I don't think it can be done on an individual virtual server instance on an Apache server, but I may be mistaken.

I do agree about the eggs in one basket,so I'm sure that other warriors will be able to suggest alternate hosts for you.

    Best of luck.

    Bill

  • I use BlueHost and have found them to be very helpful.
There is a $40 discount on the net for first time sign ups.

The only thing I don't like is they have pop ups when you log on that I can't get rid of and the subdomain thing. All of my sites are add ons of the primary domain. No one sees that but it is unneeded and can be confusing. Is that the same for Hostgator...all sites add on to primary domain?
  • I have been in IM for 4 years now and I have never looked back to any other hosting company other than Hostgator!

    They are the BEST, Period!
  • There are really, really cheap hosting out there..in fact I got mine with cpanel and everything that comes with it for only 4 dollars a year, with a price this low you can buy as many hosting accounts as your heart desires, and their service is pronto..Though it's only 75MB per account and I don't know the exact limit in terms of bandwidth..but for a few landing pages, I find that it's enough..in fact I've only used about 20MB to date.

Its perfect for hosting affiliate offer pages. Add a cheapo .info for $1.++ dollars and you've got a selling machine for less that $10 all in.

As for hostgator..I don't know if their service is really that bad, in fact according to my research they have more than 200,000 thousand clients if I recall it right..so it can't be that bad..I did some digging before to check out hosting services and if I didn't stumbled on my present host I would have selected their service.

    All the best,

    Omar

    • I use BlueHost as well and am very pleased. It appears that they offer much the same as Hostgator, including a chat room to ask questions if something comes up and you need help. They also have around the clock phone support.

  • Wow - that's the first time I heard anyone complain about Hostgator. We have 26 websites hosted with them! We've had great results with Hostgator - knock on wood!!!

    • I'm with you, buddy! This is a first in my experience too!

Never had a problem in the three years I have been with them. 72 live sites running just wonderful! I did experience a few teething issues when I first signed up, but the online chat team were superb!
  • Why do you need to upgrade? Most shared accounts have similar limits so perhaps you should get a VPS plan rather than another shared account.

    • Yep they just recently screwed up my 800 number I had through an offer with them on some weird technicality...
    • I need a reseller account so that I can have multiple c panels, what is a VPS plan?

      Cheers

  • Not godaddy. Get your domains there but... I do think that hostgator has changed some of their personnel lately, they have made a few mistakes but overall, they are the best that I have found online. give then another chance

    • Not to sound like a stick in the mud, and definately not to defend anyone here as I'm sure I don't know every single detail but it sounds to me like you're being awefully critical.

Judging a company based on one experience with a CSR and because they can't make the impossible, possible. Based on the type of account you have with them is just a tad harsh.

On a brighter note though, upgrade to dedicated server and your ip banning problem is solved (you'll probably have that situation anywhere you go)

Sometimes things need to be taken to a different level and emails are more reasonable than online chat sessions. Maybe the guy was new? Maybe he knew that a coworker could provide better assistance but that coworker wasn't in and he didn't want to mislead you? There are 23423 reasons and more than likely your best interests were the overriding factor.

    • Excpept that the top two are out of order.

(Sorry, I love Host Monster, they are far and away the best I have ever used).

  • That's annoying; hosts (and most companies in general) shouldn't really do this, IMO. I never understand why some companies treat their existing customers - the ones that matter - worse than potential ones. Well, I guess I *can* understand it, but it's annoying nonetheless and not something I agree with.

That's odd - you can always block IP addresses via cPanel ("IP Deny Manager")

Of course, you can't really block *all* IPs but your own via cPanel, so in this respect that's not really HostGator's fault.

So yeah, you can block specific IPs - or IP ranges (even 1.*.*.*, 2.*.*.* etc - up to yours) - but it's not really possible to *easily* block *all* IPs but your own from accessing cPanel

There's plently of good providers out there. Check out WebHostingTalk.com. Also remember that "unlimited" disk-space and bandwidth doesn't exist; going for a non-extreme-overselling host could be a something you may wish to consider.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • HotGator is the most reliable for me

I have tried 1 and1.com and found thier customer service to be live 24/7 and pleasant to work with.

It is too hard to move all of your websites , so be careful and always backup by putting a copy of every website on your harddrive and then backup that on an external harddrive.

    All the Best
  • I definitely love hostagator and their service is top niche. Get over the discount rate because it's just few dollar different

Their hosting is the best and I receive no downtime after months of using.
I gonna request them to do a backup for me too
  • Well no offense but I am using hostgator and i am really impressed with the support online chat .
They always able to solve my problems .
When i was a newbie , I even don't know how to create email using the your website domain name and they help me .Till now they solve every problem of mine.I am also using bluehost but I truly love the service of the hostgator .

    • Me too! I'm still a newbie, and I've received so much help - practically instantly from the hostgator online chat. Once in a while I get a CSR that isn't as sharp as the last one, but compared to Godaddy - where I can't even get telephone support because I don't remember which Credit Card I used 3 years ago when I purchased hosting and I tend to run out of patience after being on hold for 15 minutes...., Hostgator is a dream!

    • And? They never have offered the 1 cent deal or other discounts to existing customers - it's a special promotion to attract new customers. A lot of businesses run new customer specials like that.

That doesn't mean they are treating existing customers badly - and you may have gotten a special when you joined HG.

I've had mixed results with chat - but it has improved quite a bit in the past year. I also have gotten fast and good service by email.

Seems like a logical answer to me.

  • even though they dinged me for bandwidth overuse on my dedicated server...I must admit, hostgator is the best out there...Great uptime, support is amazing...I"ll be upgrading to 2500GB bandwidth plan this month!

  • I have had a couple of snags with hostgator, but only because I transferred there from a more limited host. All I did was enter a service ticket, and they solved any issue I had during the transition. They were quick to help, too. My opinion is that you should consider what it is you are asking for when looking at the negatives, like logging onto your account from a different ip, which is going to be an open option unless you're on a dedicated server, anyway.

Try using tickets if you've lost faith in the chat. That way, if someone doesn't know, they can pass it to someone who can help you through the entire help process. I've had a good experience with them so far.

I'm just not big on their webmail options... Good thing I use Outlook!
  • Check out JustHost... I host about 30 sites there and i'm really happy with them! Site load time is super fast!
  • How about using Hostnine(.)com that is who I use mainly... I also use Hostgator and have never had a problem.
  • HostMonster has all the same capabilities of HostGator and about the same price. I've used them for years and always had excellent service.
  • I've no problem using Hostgator, but for the discount part for existing user, I have no idea about that since it's my first year using Hostgator and I subscribed for 2 years one shot and I had a 20% discount.

As for the blocking IP accessing to your cpanel, no idea though as I don't care too much about that. I don't mind Hostgator staff access it, as long as not hacker, then it's fine.
  • Dedicated Servers Hosting, Web Hosting and Server Colocation from iWeb - fair prices, ok service
Welcome to SoftLayer - fancy pancy but very reliable
  • I've tried them all it seems like and I use HG now because I've never had any problems with my sites there.

  • I'd like to chime in too. My experience with hostgator has been pretty pleasant so far, and their customer support is great. I've talked to them on the phone several times, and the customer service people have been nothing but courteous, helpful and knowledgeable.

I suppose they don't offer discounts to existing members because you are already with them and they know it, so this is probably why they don't bother. It's the same with cell phone providers and cable providers, the best and juiciest deals and discounts are usually reserved for brand new customers. It's not even a huge discount really (what hostgator gives to new customers), so I wouldn't get worked up over that too much.

  • i have 2 host account in 2 different places, hostgator and startlogic, hostgator is ok,but they seem have 25 processing limit which makes my website always have internal error problem, they told me upgrade to VPS,that cost $299/mo, but in startlogic, they seem more beneficent, problem is, startlogic had 2 time down for whole day...so i believe ,you should NOT put egg in 1 basket ,that s true!!

    • My experience with Hostgator has gone just fine. I would recommend their service to any newbie starting out. When I set up my first site I had so many questions that I called support constantly. But every support person that I talked to was very helpful and walked me through my problems. Right now I can not see myself going with any other hosting provider.

  • I have Hostgator but actually like Bluehost much better. Someone said the cpanels are identical but they're not. I find bluehost to be easier to navigate for some reason.

Service is fine with both but I am spreading the wealth and now have hosting with hostgator, bluehost, supergreen and someone else (can't remember). Just got away from 1and1. couldn't stand those guys.

    • I use ResellerZoom
I like them because you have more control over your domains...with WHM (account set-ups) and separate cPanels for all of your domains...perfect for site-flippers...

as for the dedicated IP..usually it only costs $2-$5 extra to get a dedicated IP...it's worth it if you don't want any other outside domains sharing your IP
  • You can try out the free hosting like 000webhost.com
  • Ive had a couple of problems to with internal errors etc but on the whole I think hostgator are good.
  • Honestly, I do not work for Hostgator or anything, but I have nothing but great words to say about them. I have heard FatCow is great too.
  • I'm with Host 9, I like the way I am able to host my sites on various servers around the world with them, great for SEO.

    Cheers,
    Danny.

  • personally I *heart* hostgator, been with them for 6 months and never had a problem with them. Excellent and efficient service can't fault them really.
  • I used to be with HostGator some years ago. I had some issues with PHP Script time-out that I didnt have with other web hosters. So I left them.

Now I'm at Hostmonster. It looks OK.

Anyway, I think there're always good n bad in everything...
  • I'm having Reseller account with HG since 2005. However, I have spread my "MAIN" sites across different hosting companies. So far HG is the most reliable hosting service provider I ever had.

But there maybe some exceptions like you... so just say Good Bye to HG!
  • Honestly, I do not see any problem with HG. It's a matter that you have a
    different expectation this time.

Every company has its own policies and regulations. It will never be possible
    to please everybody.

    Learn to accommodate them.
  • I love HG live support, they fix things immediately. I'm very satisfied with their service
  • Hi Melvin

I am only new to internet marketing but i have registered a few domain names and have word press blogs with bluehost.com. No problems so far?

  • I have had major problems with hostgator.

Always with the payment mix up.

I ordered a domain name from them 3 years ago, which I canceled before the first year was up. I've been billed on 3 separate times which froze my hosting account. I have been credited for their mistakes.

Other then that the were ok...
  • Agree with most posters that HostGator is the bomb. Customer support is always on top of things. I also have very good luck with HostMonster. Very similar set up to HostGator and support is just as good IMHO.
  • I've never had a problem with Hostgator either. They've always been more than helpful, no matter what time of day or night I contact them.
  • [DELETED]
  • I've registered my domains through GoDaddy, and I'm hosting some at GoDaddy and some at HostGator. I've found HostGator to be much more responsive when I have a problem, and has more features available for the price.
