I wouldn't look past Open Office - its a freebie and can do everything that you need it to.

  • Open Office is GREAT. It is by far the easiest way to convert a .doc to .pdf.

    Yeh,

Converting from Doc to PDF is the easiest method.
You can do that either by using nitropdf 14 days free trial version or
    doctopdf.net free option.

Lately I've been using Open Office to create my digital ebooks The interface is dead simple to use and it's very intuitive.

Simply create your work and then export to PDF.

It couldn't be any easier. Open Office is also completely free so you can't beat that.

As someone that does professional ebook formatting, I can tell you that I use both MS Word and Open Office Writer, so in my opinion, Open Office wins hands down when it comes to functionality in regards to what can be done when creating a PDF ebook.

It's a simple, free solution and I would highly recommend it. Personally and professionally.

I use Primo pdf, drag doc icon on program icon, make pdf instant, free software. It's by the same Nitro Professional makers, but its free and does only doc->pdf

I use eWriterPro, it's a resell rights product but most people seem to give it away for free.

      OK

The reason so many people are saying Open office writer is because it is the best in terms of flexibility. You can add graphic headers and set up page templates very easily.

It's funny, I have been using Open Office and Also Word '07, but I just got Ebook Pro given to me as a bonus the other day for purchasing something, and it looks awesome. I think I will try it out and see how I like it.

I used Open Office for a while, then just switched to Adobe Acrobat Pro, it was worth it. Open Office was good for some things, mostly because it was free, but it didn't make my work easier so it often took me a little longer to do things.

Been playing with Open Office and Primo PDF (free version) this morning. A couple of observations...

If you create a clickable table of contents in Word and then make a PDF with Open Office, the ToC doesn't work (i.e. the hyperlinks don't take you to the correct pages).

Primo PDF on the other hand loses all of the hyperlinks, so you won't get too many site visits if doing so is your objective.

But as stated above, when it's free, you can't complain about the price and 99% of the time, Open Office does a tremendous job...

I use a combination of Acrobat Pro Extended 9, MS Word 2007, Powerpoint 2007 and Adobe Photoshop.

To answer part two of David's question...

Open up the PDF in Adobe reader or Foxit and from the "file" menu, select "properties". In most cases this will tell you which software created the PDF.

OpenOffice. Go to OpenOffice.org. Download and install.

Now open a OpenOffice text file ((this is like an MS Word Doc). Create or copy-paste your content.

Then go to the menu bar: File->Export. Then click on export to PDF.

It is free software and takes a few seconds to convert to PDF once you have the installation.

    Did this help?

I use Microsoft Word to create my ebooks - if you have the 2010 version (currently in beta testing so free) you can export to PDF with the links active. Unfortunately the older version will let you export to PDF but no active links so then I use Open Office to save as a pdf instead.

i then use Calibre to save a .mobi and .epub version because people can then read the ebook on their iphone or an ebook reader.

The MS Word 2010 Beta is pretty awesome to behold, but it kept on crashing for me, which was a bummer. Powerpoint 2010 is excellent and so is Outlook 2010. I haven't played with the other parts of Office 2010 apart from Excel.

I'll probably buy Office 2010 Professional when it's released though and use it in conjunction with Acrobat Pro Extended.

Mrs S, thanks for the tip about .mobi and .epub versions. I'm going to look further into that Calibre software you mentioned.

It's a bummer that Apple doesn't include native PDF support with the iPod Touch and iPhone. Does anyone know off the top of your head if iPod/iPhone supports flash in the aftermarket iTunes PDF readers? I don't have a PDF reader on mine.

I used Microsoft Office - then added the template as a background and converted it to a PDF.

My vote is for Open Office as well. Did my last WSO and it is as easy as using standard Microsoft Office - or even easier. It converts graphics and what is very important links to webpages. So you can alway put some more affiliate links in ebook =D

Personally, I write it in MSword and then later convert it into PDF using the free software "dopdf".
