both look good but dont have radius search (sorts listings by proximity to a nominated zip code)

You may want to check out BizDirectory at idevspot.com. I use it for my cities Business Directory. It uses Google Maps and will search by zip code, region, county and also country.

thanks for your input
I had looked at BizDirectory 2.x :: Business Directory Software :: PHP & MySQL but had dismissed it as too basic but maybe a bit hasty there

the beauty of a radius search script is it has all zip codes (postcodes in Aus)
with lattitude and longitude built in so it will bring up all listing in order of proximity to zipcode searched - with a simple zipcode search if there are no exact matches you get "no matches found" at which point you think mmm useless site and move on....
the Joomla Sigsiu addon has stacks of countries covered where phpMyDirectory has Nth America UK and Aus

Thanks again for input - if anyone has any others I'm sure someone will be interested - perhaps you could include favourite features - why you use it

It's is hard to do good internet services and products in Switzerland, due the 4 national languages...

I went with phpMyDirectory - Web Portal, Business Directory, Classifieds, Link Indexing - so far very happy - has the zip/radial search and a German language option

Have a look at Web 2.0 Directory - it claims translations into up to 18 languages based upon the individual user's preference.

Note that phpLD has a translation widget. We also have done many customizations over the years that are more extensive. phpLD has a GREAT German translation already, and had been translated into many languages.

the best,in my opinion, is PHP Link Directory Script.

This is due to the multiple functionality that it possesses. You can use articles as well as other services.

The key here is that you should really use Wordpress and get some script to work with it via a Plugin.

I hear you about the plugin. We get a lot of requests for Wordpress integrations and we have already been working with a few customers on this. We also have built a clientele of customers who come to us for wordpress work. So I anticipate "something" to be released that will fulfill this obvious need. Sorry that I missed your question!

We setup phpLD sites alongside wordpress all the time. It would be setup in a separate folder just as you said. Regular or Featured listings are easily done in phpLD. Featured in phpLD means Top of the Category page and often more prominently displayed.

Deeper integration is possible too like logging in to wordpress also logs you into phpLD, or showing data from phpLD in wordpress. We are actually working with some customers now on a wordpress phpLD bridge and that is coming along nicely but not quite available to the public. That said, lots of people (example) have phpld and wordpress running on the same site.

I'll give you what I feel is an honest answer where I am not trying to "push" phpLD only...

A script is a "base" for starting a web directory. Every successful website I have ever seen has been customized, and the more successful the site, the more it has been customized.

I think most modern scripts have such a base where you can get something setup and meet initial goals. In our case, you can setup categories, receive submissions including paid, and there are many, many configuration options.

So if you are sort of working from a shoestring budget or just wanting to test the waters, really most scripts in this thread should not involve a large investment. We have the special offer to make it easier for people.

That said, whether you choose our script or another, a successful site is always the result of progress over time. Lots of people make money with our script with little or no customization, but others such as the pet hotels site have done enormous customization.

Here is an article about running a professional directory from someone I see here on WF sometimes that has done very well. It is always good to study what others have done before jumping in without a parachute!

If you are good with CSS and HTML, you will have little trouble locating the files to edit them. Nearly all of the design is with CSS.

We do have such a database, but I don't recommend creating a large site with a bunch of empty pages. These are often referred to as "Stub Pages" and can be a negative to the search engines. Our latest

search by location

only shows city results for cities that actually have listings in the database.

Regarding search by location. Can someone search (essentially, BROWSE, all businesses in a certain USA State? Or zip code?

I'd like a feature that will always return the nearest entries, in order of distance (even if there is no listing in the city someone is searching/browsing). This is so that a search never turns up empty. Does that make sense, and is it possible with phpLD ?

Whatever wordpress directory script you decide to use I highly recommend WP Robot plugin. This plugin will allow you to auto update content keeping your site fresh looking and all hands off. This plugin will pull from sources such as Yahoo News! and Yelp business reviews for starters.
