Video editing software that won't cost a fortune

I'm in need of some video editing software for the PC that isn't going to cost me $600.

I don't need a lot, I just need it to accept MP4 format, and allow for simple captions and cutting - anything else is just bonus that I probably wouldn't use anyway.

So, what programs should I be looking into?

My price range is somewhere between $40-$80.

    • Sony Vegas Movie Studio FTW.

It's within your price range, very powerful, easy to learn, and is a very capable audio editor.

You can get a fully functioning 30 day trial at Sony Creative Software.
  • Hi Chris,

Serif MoviePlus X3 is very powerful but also very cheap video editing software.

  • Another vote for Sony. I'd recommend the platinum edition as you can do more with it and it allows you to export to more formats.

    • I just bought Sony Imagination Studio Suite 2
at Best Buy for $100 on sale regular price $180.00

      It contains...
Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10
      DVD Studio Architect Studio 5
      ACID Music Studio 8
      Sound forge Audio Studio 10
      Photo Go
      and 360 soundtracks
  • Of course, it all depends on the kind of videos you're making and what bells and whistles you want, but here's a few:

Pinnacle (about $60) - the Ken Burns effect is $20 extra
Memories on Web (free) - this has the Ken Burns effect in it

Final Cut (you don't Final Cut Pro, just the basic one will do what you need)
    Adobe Premiere

You can go to Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com and get trial versions of most of these and try them out first.

    • Sony Vegas easy to learn.
  • AVS4YOU® Best multimedia software on today's market.. I use it. Pretty damn good. All apps for one time $59 payment.
  • By now I guess you already decided -

    Nevertheless my suggestion
    a) I agree Sony Vegas is the best, my brother uses the $500 version, and sky is the limit - so to go with Sony Vegas smaller versions is certainly a good start

    b) other than that I would suggest MAGIX Movie Edit or Movie Edit Pro
I am using it myself, price was $59, and yes - it works with .mp4 files
And another reason for my purchase: You can do "green screen"/"blue screen" effects = chroma key editing with it!
That was the only low price software I found at the time of purchase that was capable of this feature!

    Cheers.
  • Sony Vegas Movie Studio ... I tried the 30 day trial loved it then bought it at Amazon for about 100. They also had it at a local Office Depot for about 20 bucks more.

Check out what it can do and the amount of tutorials over at youtube.
