Due to popularity of WordPress platform, recently I have started noticing more and more packages showing up from different hosting companies tailored for WordPress website by claiming they them to be optimized.

As this type of hosting is more expensive (somewhere between $15-25) I would like to know how should one start with new Wordpress website? What hosting to take and when consider migration to higher package to accomodate growing traffic. To expand on my question, I would like to indicate traffic volumes in question with options and receive respective anwer for each please.

1. 0-1000 visitors
2. 1000-3000 visitors
3. 3000-5000 visitors
4. 5000-7000 visitors
5. 7000-10000 visitors

Thank you

    • Stay away from godady they will shut you down and ask questions later and if you don't belive me ask Mike Filsaime I'm sure he is not the only one.
  • Hostgator and namecheap are the best in my opinion. Haven't had any problem with them through the years. If you are not going to have millions of visitors, that wouldn't be a concern I guess.

Search for Vendor-Lock in this forum I use his hosting and autoresponder package which is only $3.99 per month - bargain!

    • I am only able to give you a general answer and you may have to ask your question in a hosting related discussion forum.

Most internet marketers don't experience such high volumes of traffic daily / weekly except when, for example they are launching a product or when an occasional blog post goes viral.

For most of us, we just need a basic level of hosting. There are many hosting companies that provide adequate hosting for Wordpress at low prices such as HostGator and BlueHost.

I've used HostGator in the past and had no complaints.

  • I like to try out new hosting companies from the Warrior classified ads lately. Although I did have one bad experience that resulted in me losing an entire site, 80 hours of work, and some good money invested. But whatever, things happen.

You can usually score a killer deal in the classified section of this forum. Just practice due diligence when you're investigating your options for a company to go with.

I personally always go for cloud hosting or really powerful packages that I can host a lot of websites on. But that's just me. Your best bet will be to do some digging around this forum and even ask questions to the owners of the classified threads and businesses if you have to.

Never make a decision in haste or you will end up regretting it, but I think that goes without saying.

  • Although I am new to IM, I used to run a commercial print company and I have found that Bluehost are certainly a very professional organisation with some great support material. I feel very confident in their hands which I think is important for a start-up marketer.

  • BlueHost left me hanging several years ago when malware was on my server blaming me for everything (as usual) suspending my account without any attempts to show a bit of care so they are out of the way.

Anyone hosted several years on HostMonster?

      Bluehost, justhost and godaddy suck.

Hostgator is supposed to be much better.

    • So far thanks guys. Now I want to ask about hosts offering "Optimized WordPress hosting".

Do you know those? Have any experience with them?
  • Normally I would recommend Hostgator, but they're quality has gone down since I last used them for other sites a few years ago. I believe it was sold off to larger company (same with bluehost) and they just aren't delivering the uptime they promise. I've had 3 downtimes this year which lasted for hours at a time. I am still with them, but looking into more serious solutions as my traffic and biz grows.
  • Godaddy might work with wordpress, but I have had so many problems with Godaddy with other application. If you need something added to the server to make your software run they also will not do it.
  • TL;DR

I switched from Hostgator to Veerotech (look for WSO for discount) a few months ago, and I'm quite satisfied.
  • "Optimized for WordPress" is for the most part an empty claim, nothing but sales hype to charge extra. WordPress is nothing more than php/mysql which any webserver that is properly optimized will also be optimized for WordPress
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Host gator is pretty good but they have been having issues recently. I use arvixe as I have not had any problems with them and their customer service is great aswell, english speaking representatives :-)

    Hello Boris,

I'm glad to see your question on the warrior forum; if you don't mind allow me to take a try at answering some of these questions you may have.

    1. Different hosting companies claiming they optimize for wordpress:
Some people have had excellent experience with these kind of hosting companies, I personally don't use one specifically optimized for wordpress.

What I look for is (1) excellent service - you want someone to be able to respond if any issue arises (2) reliable servers - you want fast servers and minimal downtime, most guarantee 99.9% so that's a norm today (3) good prices and specs - the webhosting space is getting more and more competitive so thankfully this means consumers are better off.

Typically expect to spend $10 for shared hosting around $30 for VPS and $90 for a dedicated box though prices can vary.

    2. I would like to know how should one start with new Wordpress website?
In our personal experience you don't really need a web host specifically optimized for wordpress. As long as they fit the 3 criteria above you can fare very well itself. The main concern with wordpress sites is the occasionally high resource usage (mainly because of plug-ins you're running) and security vulnerabilities.
We have found that using a page cache and using a security plugin (I think the one we're using right now is WP Secure) works very well to solve both issues

    3. I would like to indicate traffic volumes in question with options and receive respective anwer for each please.

There isn't really a specific standard to say for this because each web hosting company may provide different packages and it depends also on the server load already on the box you're sharing with.

You typically won't have a problem going with a normal shared hosting (think 50 GB bandwidth and 5 GB hard-drive space). When you need to upgrade, many host will be more than happy to help...it's easier to upgrade than downgrade.

If you're looking for some shared hosting solutions, I'd be happy to share some of our experiences:
    (1) Stable Host: We tried them before though not active currently (have a dormant account there). Service is good, prices are cheap
    (2) MDDHosting: We used their VPS. GREAT servers, FAST support, Higher prices
    (3) CrocWeb: Only started using them recently and we're glad to recommend them. Found them on the Warrior forum and have been VERY please with the performance and pricing so far.

Please note the biggest issue with web hosting and choosing the right one is reliability and trust which I forgot to mention in the post above. Many companies will fly by night; look ideally only for those who have been around for a lengthy period of time with a proven track record.

If you have any further questions please feel free to ask here or send me a PM and I'd be glad to assist as I can.

Ps. Oh yes we have namecheap shared hosting too; it's good we've been please with the support. that's another one to consider; because they have been established a very long time with their domain service (released their web hosting about 2 years back) you can still trust them despite their relatively new webhosting product skewe.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Blue host for all if them. Best web hosting hands down and its pretty inexpensive.

  • HostGator - was my favorite. Passed 6 month I closed all sites (12) - Horrible uptime/Slow
Bluehost - Is OK but their support team can't even google answers on more advanced q's
LiquidWeb - Om My... what a relief. Superfast hosting. Perfect support. Just best so far.
  • InterServer is well respected and has been up for 15 years! Yes, 15 years. Not to mention how quick their servers are.
    • [1] reply
    • Opened an account with interserver.net a couple of months ago using their least expensive shared hosting plan. They have been excellent. Not one second of downtime so far.

Just noticed that this is my 200th post on the WF.

      BOOYAH !!!
  • Facts don't matter?
  • I use HawkHost and am very happy with their hosting.
  • Hostgator is going downhill. There is a major server outage every couple of months or so. Just today my sites were down for several hours again. I have been with them for years, but since they were bought by EIG and moved their data center to Provo, their downtime has become way too much for my business. Time to find a more reliable host.
  • First get a good template for your site i.e ur wordpress site. For start check themeforest for that, responsive websites are a must to get both mobile and pc base users.
For your plan under $25/month, I think its quite good for a start and get a web hosting that has datacenter near your customer base.
  • i am currently with iPage and quite happy with their features and services

    Thanks.
  • If you are just starting out any shared hosting plan that allows you to host unlimited domains will do !

When I started out I used hostgator but because of there great customer service and I found a coupon on youtube!

You will know when its time to upgrade that you grew out of your current plan...

My warning signs were I was crashing my shared hosting server with ppv traffic ! At lest that what I thought was the cause ..

Hosgator /bluehost they will do for you !
I would stay as far away from Godday as you possible can ! I heard so many things even bad things even to the point that they turn you in to the FCC !

    I hope this helps you
    • [1] reply
    • If you're starting out, my recommendation would be to go with Hostgator's Baby Plan. Once you start scaling up in terms of profits and number of visitors, then I would migrate to a high scale hosting service like LiquidWeb, for example.

      Hope this helps!

    • This is actually a good question. Who are you using now for your hosting? Do you like them? You might even find they offer 1-click WordPress installs as is the case with most hosts these days.

  • I use Site 5 for my hosting and they've been bang on so far. If I remember right they also have a 30 day free trial.

  • Hostgator is a good choice.
  • Hey mate, In my opinion HostGator is the best, they are very cheap and reliable cost around $8.00 a month but here's my coupon (cheapwebhostin) which gives you your first month for only 1 cent. You can basically test out there service for an entire month free.
    • [1] reply
    • Veerotech is better, and costs less. Most "unlimited" hosts are not bargains -- especially the EIG brands (Fatcow, Hostgator, Bluehost, etc).

Like Indiana Jones -- choose, but choose wisely!

PS - I dig the new smileys here.
  • If you are just starting out you do not need to worry about whether you are going to get 1, 100 , 1000 or 10000 visitors per day to your website. You just need to start and then scale upward as your daily traffic increases.

The cheapest places to start are hostgator, bluehost and godaddy. hostgator and bluehost are owned by the same company and since they have been bought out the uptime of their servers has had issues. But since you are just starting out then it would not matter. Godaddy is the other choice for newbies but as somebody earlier posted they can shut down your website for any reason they want. if you dont have a recent backup then you lost everything.

Once your website has started building traffic then you can move up from the shared hosting sites above to a VPS. Some of the better quality vps hosting sites are knownhost and liquidweb.
    • [1] reply
    • I agree! As you are just starting out...Hosting does not matter. Just ensure a good name with good support. For that Hostgator & Blue Host are fine enough. Although, I have not heard anything wrong about liquid host yet. You can try even them.

In my opinion, there is nothing like WordPress optimized hosting. All these hosting companies provide basic features and have standard technologies in use.

In my opinion, when I started...The most important factor for my success was support for technical issues from my hosting company. Then Hostgator support was at its peak with so many great support staff members. At present, I am not so sure.

My vote will go for Liquid host, Though I am still using hostgator, However i will switch over to liquid host in coming days for sure, considering only praises for them.

      Best of Luck!
  • You should ask this question at a web hosting forum like webhostingtalk.com
There you can read real, current reviews of hosts and look at sales threads. Also, a representative from just about all the major web hosts can be contacted through the forum. You can also post a request with your specific needs and a number of different hosts will provide you with offers.

  • I want to say that hosting services from leapwebhosting.com and ifastnet.com are good for hositng Wordpress blogs with, they have plans which are full of useful resources and their uptime is high.
Pricing policy is simple and flexible.
  • [DELETED]
  • Hostgator is good one
  • IMHO Dont use Godaddy they suck, HostGator is the best, they are very cheap and reliable i am using them baby plan for 3 years without any issue ,cost wise if you wait till blackfriday or patrick day or some such events they give 67% discount so you get 1 year package for around $25-$30.
  • Blue Host is the best.
  • your all traffic will not knock you at a time. So, go for any shared hosting.

    Thanks
  • Hostgator. Great Support. Upgrades are Super Easy. Around a loooooong time.

I've used LOTS of web host providers over the years - Hostgator has been around all of those years - yes, they have downtime but they are quick to resolve all issues and their packages are usually enough for most. Customer support is really strong but you will get better answers if you call them directly but all other general stuff, just putting in a support ticket will resolve most issues. Chat system is for very very basic issues but it does work and is a nice feature.

Dreamhost.com - I use them when I need more testing of personal scripts - they are great for developers due to the scripts they allow you to run and test on their servers. NO TELEPHONE SUPPORT, email support usually in 24 hours.

GODADDY Hosting - Nooooooo. I have a couple of tech support guys that are my clients and they don't even go there ... well, they did but they left their own company's hosting - lol

Optimizing for WordPress is just a marketing angle for a hosting provider to specialize in an area - there is no special requirements or optimizing on the server end of things, its merely a marketing tactic - kind of like those Lego kits, they can charge you more for the kits than an entire bucket of Legos

    All the best!
  • I have used hostgator for years and I have never had any problems. I have also heard good things about bluehost. If I can be of any more help please let me know.
  • HostGator and Godaddy are good options.
