Yahoo is closing GeoCities...

"On October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files. "

The once King of the internet is slowly disappearing.

They've been closing. They announced it a few months back, but didn't announce a specific date when the site would be completely down.

It took quite a few people by surprise. Most of them had no idea GeoCities was even still around.

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Ha True!! It seems only the porn spammers knew about it.

I guess we all are getting old. I'm a bit surprised they didn't turn it around or spiff it up. Heck we have Squidoo that is doing great. Couldn't Yahoo have changed GeoCities to make it viable?

Squidoo is doing well and it will still be doing well after the recent change in terms. A lot of spammers will be weeded out again from using the site.

There's a good chance that it might actually go up in traffic to from having better content and high Google quality ratings too.

I'm all for them tightening up on their regulation, there was still way too much spam on Squidoo even after the Google slap, and there's still too many people promoting cheap and crappy products.

I think the business viability has a lot to do with having a good revenue potential. I mean Squidoo's business model is pretty genius. They have lots of quality content and they make sure to get their share of affliate income from traffic (50%) while also providing another content resource for all types of people.

Not to mention that they make building a lens incredibly easy and intuitive. It's really hard to make a lens look ugly and it's really easy to make a crappy Geocities site.

So, it's a winning combination. Maybe if they would have made site building a little easier like weebly, or had a more intuitive interface. I don't know, I don't think I've made a Geocities site in over 10 years.

I wonder how many Geocities websites will disappear from the internet?

      I had one too.

Too many ads destroyed this business model.

I kinda always thought geo citys sucked to be honest , I mean dont get me wrong I am no great web designer but even my skills then could best a geo city page and they often had load time issues and missing pages ect. They sucked and I wont miss them. Just my opinion on them. And yes I am old enough to remember them 1st coming around.

I remember my first site with them back in the late 90's. I wonder if they prune inactive accounts after a specific time... would be interesting to see if I can remember my old account details to see if its still in there somewhere!

(Almost) nothing is eternal on the Net.

Somebody said that one year on the Internet is approximatedly the equivalent of three years offline (i. e. changes and movements are much faster online). If this is true, we can say that Geocities was in business for 30 years, more or less. Very good... :-)

I had a site on there in the 90s too. I'd completely forgotten about them.
I had a lot on Tripod too, but was thrown off for using them to host pictures for my own websites ages ago.

I was only talking about Geocities with someone offline the other day. Shame to hear it will be closing down, started using Geocities in around 2000.
