Change your settings to only let signed in members comment. Or whatever specific option you have.

Yes, definitely install a plugin. Also, one of the more advanced systems like Disqus are a great way to get people to interact with the site and it really reduces the headache of dealing with the comment spam. It's going to be there one way or another but you just have to take steps to limit it.

Hey, I'm a little bi-curious with Disqus. I have a couple of pop quizzes if you don't mind.

      1. The Disqus comments do get indexed by Google, yes yes?
      2. What effects will Disqus have on loading times / performance?

Yes Google indexes them. All your comments are listed on your account like mine:

I use Disqus on all my blogs, it has no effect on loading. Disqus helps Google to brand you as well.

Askimet by itself can be useless, especially against serious spammers. Here is a post with the list of plugins I use:

      http://internetprofituniversity.com/...press-plugins/

Key is nospamnx. With it you can create your own block list of IP addresses and reference it on all of your sites. Works great. Free to use, it's priceless. Blogs that were getting 100+ spam comments are day now get zero.

I second what Mark said above about WordPress Zero Spam.

Danny, I have had the same issue, and none of the well-known plugins, including Akismet, helped.

But then I came across WordPress Zero Spam and since I installed it little over 6-7 months ago, the spam comment went down from a few hundred a day to maybe 1-2 a day.

Its free and you can download it from the WordPress repository.

I don't know if this helps, but one thing I stopped doing was putting my email on my sites. I use to list out the emails fully but now I just put andre(at)emailme.com instead so it doesn't make a link along with Akismet I have no issues.

And I changed my comments to Facebook

Spam issues are certainly a pain in the butt. I have to say that Akismet is working for me quite well, but I was also recommended WordFence, which has helped as well.
Don't want to teach anyone how to suck eggs here, but in your Discussion Settings, have you unchecked the first two boxes on Default Article Settings?
(Just passing on tips that have helped me)

When using WordPress, I always choose to allow only registered members to comment on posts.
Also, you can activate the option "Comment author must have a previously approved comment".

I'm using Akismet and it's works very well. It blocks almost all of the spam comments and the ones that gets away somehow, I will delete them manually.

Akismet blocks most of the comment spam I get on my blogs. The few that do slip though I delete manually. I'm intrigued about Wordpress Zero Spam now after reading the comments here and think I'll give it a go and try it out

I think jetpack does some help with spam. I have seen some difference after using it. Give it a try.

  • Do you get legitimate comments? If not, just remove the comment box.

    Hope it helps.

    Thanks

Slightly paraphrasing this - do you NEED comments? Not all of us build websites that need to interact with users. Do you need?

If not, you can easily switch off the comments section in the entire site, at one stroke!

And if you do need comments, do you have an option of integrating with Facebook? That may take care of all your headache?

Also, ask for members to send you $1 to be able to comment on your forum as well as have them call you up. Get a cheap disposable $15 cell phone at radio shack for this one. I have a forum and most new members are posting spam - It is see Alice and rorex reprica. Frankly, we er can laugh or cry.
