Do You Have a Test Site for trying stuff out?

Years ago I realized that to learn I would have to try to do things I'd never done before. It was a little scary but how else would I be able to learn if a redirect script worked, or I could install a cgi script? etc. Keep in mind I remember BBS's and AT & XT computers (don't worry if those terms are strangers to you).

Somehow I decided I needed a test site.

At first I considered a subdirectory within my first minisales site but decided that wasn't a best choice.
With the discovery of hosting accounts where you could install multiple domains for a flat monthly fee I created a separate site where I have tested cgi programs, php sites, template and images changes, and much more.

I'm not talking about tests like running creating two domains with separate PPC campaigns to see what keyword or headline worked best.

I'm taking about a site where you 'play' to see what you can do. 'What happens if I modify this line' type stuff. I'm going to hire this programmer but can he really do the job? Can I install a php site, well let's see if this works?
I usually just have the index page be a redirect to somewhere else so accidental visitors to the domain don't know where they've landed, and do the 'testing' in directories beneath the root.

My first 'can I do it, what happens if" tests were probably cgi installations.

So how about it, have you had or do you have a test site?

Heck yeah. But I'm probably biased as a programmer for over a decade.

I have a local install of Apache, MySQL, PostgreSQL, PHP, and any other technology I might consider using when launching a new site. I test everything locally before uploading it, or I set aside a test/sandbox site on a subdomain of my live site to do testing.

It's never good to launch a site, drive traffic, and get a bunch of complaints that registration is broken, or people are getting in the gate for free because your purchase process is funkdafied in a not-so-groovy way.

Not having all the techie knowhow of Max, I usually ask a couple of mates to try and break it....

but its true what he says...... dont start promoing it until its fully tested

I always test everything on my 'normal sites' before launching. But I liked to have a separate place for playing with programs.
Not being a real programer, I'm self taught with what I do know, in the early years I spent hours trying to make scripts work. I just loved to see if I could do it.

I don't know how to do local installs. I do remember one time I have at least 4 operating systems on one computer just to see if I could do it.

As the internet marketing field and computers have advanced I don't do much programming anymore, my time is better spent elsewhere. But I still feel I need a place to try things out.

    new2ebiz,

I'm not a "real" programmer either. I'm completely self-taught through experience, asking the web, reading books, etc. I just got good enough that people pay me to do it so I now magically have the title. ;-)

It's the same way in any field. Knowledge is always self-gained, even when you're being taught. You still have to have it make sense in your brain and only you can do that. That's why there are so many people hanging out in this forum asking questions and sharing results!

If you're curious... local installs for web stuff are similar to tweaking out your computer to do a multi-boot for different OSes. You're essentially setting up an environment for a specific purpose, in this case web-hosting instead of running client-side applications. There's plenty of tutorials on the web if you're so inclined.

[That's where I first got my knowledge on the subject back in 1999 or so. Bless the internets!]

    To growth and success,
