Temporary donation button for personal reason

When I was starting on developing blog, what I know is that there are three ways people make money using their blogs: targeted ads, commission-based affiliate programs, and that little donation button that usually leads to Paypal.

I have blogs that currently earn (but not big enough to sustain my daily needs or replace my job) using Adsense.

Now, for the personal part. I have a child who needs to undergo surgery and I need to gather some money.

I wonder if it's okay to put a donation button in my blogs, telling people that I need money for my son? Is this something that has been done before? Would there be ethical reasons for me not to do it, or do it in a very specific manner?

Thank you

Maybe take a photo of your son and explain a little of the story to back it up as well.

Just to piggy back on laurencewins good advice, you may want to consider a short video with you and your son, perhaps playing together, you telling a short short story to the camera or a little bit of both would add even more credibility.

I am thinking of putting a photo but probably not a video. Me and my wife has been talking about it and when she suggested asking for help from a local TV station, I asked if they intend to telecast them (my wife and my son). When the guys from the TV station said they will, my wife backed-out. I consider our life very private and whenever possible, we would like to avoid unnecessary exposure. Moreover, my son is very healthy looking and it does not appear that he needs surgery, so I don't think visuals will help us. The surgery seems to be not really urgent but the doctor wants him to undergo surgery while he's still a baby so he won't remember this.

I'm still contemplating on this. I really do not like the idea of asking for money. Loans, yes, but donation. Uhm no. However, this might be a personal issue or attitude that I need to overcome. I have been very frugal and practical when it comes to money. I never expected that something like this will come up in my life.
