Amazon Affiliate - Newbie Questions

Hi all. I am brand new on this site and am hoping to get some help/guidance on starting a website and making some extra money as an Amazon affiliate. First a little background.

I'm a 40 year old husband/father with a full-time job in the accounting sector. I've read a number of books (The Four Hour Workweek, The Millionaire Fastlane, Rich Dad Poor Dad, etc) in the past year and have been exploring ideas on how to make some extra money. Originally I had planned on importing items from China and reselling them on eBay, but after a month of two of research and dealing with Chinese suppliers I've decided this isn't for me. After some further reading I now believe becoming an Amazon affiliate might be a better initial path.

I do have a number of hobbies that I believe might be good niches for sites to start. I use forums A LOT for research and view the internet as a tool that I use to solve just about any problem I come across in life.

So basically I'm trying to figure out where to start. Are there any thorough sites or books that provide step-by-step instructions on how to get started?

Thanks in advance!

Look for a niche that is evergreen and where people spend lots of money on both Physical products (over $100 on Amazon) and info products (amazon books and Clickbank)

Then build an authority site in that niche where you provide tips and tricks of the trade plus reviews for all the top product categories in the niche.

Build your list from day 1 by giving away something valuable for free on your site with a popup.

Promote both info products and amazon products to that list while building a relationship with them.

Create your own info products to sell to the list.

Stick to that one site and grow it over time. You will have a real asset and a business that pays well for years to come.

      Hope that helps

You need to invest something. All you need is a domain, and hosting and this can be had for about $100.00 per year. and like other posters have stated Erica Stone's Extreme Review.

You could try with a blogger blog, or a free weebly blog but I doubt you would see any success with them.

Your other half is "letting" you start your own business but is unwilling to let you spend the minimum to start it. Well, why should any of us invest in this.

With Amazon Affiliate, you need to learn a lot:
    1 Choose a niche, keywords
    2. Create a site
    3. Add content
    4. Promotion
    5. Adjust and increase the conversion
At start up, you need at least $200 / month budget (add content, promotion)
I think Erica Stone's (Sojourn on WF) ebook can help you for guideline. But the game changes day by day, you need to make your plan base on the information on Ebook, forum and Take Action.
You may not do some tasks above, you can outsource with cheap price. It may not the best quality services, but better than nothing for a start up business.

Just wanted to update......I bought Erica's Extreme Review and I HIGHLY recommend it. I have never setup a website before in my life and her book has been so helpful! I've had a couple of questions as I've worked through the process and she has been incredibly helpful!

    Hi,

It's indeed great to know that you're about to start making extra money. I would suggest you not to look at this as Making Extra Money but take this as a REAL Online Business.

Amazon affiliate is a good of making money online but I would suggest you to combine CPA. Also, move forward to building membership sites or online communities to create a full business model for sustainable income.

I see Jan Roos has replied to you above in reply #4.

Everything he says is pure gold. I've followed him for years and his guidance has made me a good, steady income. I very probably could have made a good deal more, but my primary focus for a long time has been writing Kindle fiction..

Take a look at Jan's signature and consider buying the WSO he's advertising. I bought it when it first came out and it is highly relevant to what you hope to achieve. It's not cheap, but it really is the only course you'll ever need to build a quality, sustainable online business.

I see you've already bought Erica's Extreme Review WSO. I also have most of her material and as others have said, it's excellent.

EDIT: I think it's also worth adding that anyone who purchases products from either Erica or Jan will receive stellar customer service from both of them. Both will go the extra mile to solve any problems or clarify any issues.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with any of the posts above, but I do question why you're focused on the Amazon Affiliate program. Not that there's anything wrong with this program -- in fact, my business makes most of its money with Amazon -- but it does seem premature to pick a monetization method before you even have a business plan.

To me what you're asking is not that much different from deciding you want to open a store that takes American Express and then asking what you should do. Sure, we could give you some steps for that, too. Rent a storefront, get some inventory, price your products, create some nice shelf displays, advertise so that people know about your store... But is that really helpful? Not really. It doesn't say anything about why your store is going to be better than the 999,999 other stores that are out there. Is it going to be cheaper? Is your staff going to be really, really helpful and knowledgable? Moreover, it certainly doesn't say anything about why taking American Express is so important. Maybe American Express is a great thing for your store -- but maybe it would be better to take Visa or Mastercard or all three.

The point is that Amazon is just one monetization method of many. But until you have a solid business plan, until you have a value proposition that ensures that your site is going to be better than the competition, the monetization method doesn't matter very much. Maybe Amazon is right for you -- but maybe not. Yes, monetization is an important part of a business plan, but it's only just a part. And it's certainly not where I'd start when trying to start a new business.

Thanks for the responses. I decided to start an Amazon affiliate review site because I felt like I just needed to start doing something. I've been running through ideas for over a year now and I was told on another forum to just pick something and dive in. I'm not going into this closed minded. Rather, I'm already looking of adding an ecommerce section to my niche site.

I guess I'm a little confused by what is meant by having a business plan. I do have a plan which is evolving as I go. A week ago I didn't have the slightest idea how to build a website but now I have a domain name and website (almost completely setup and formatted but with no reviews yet). To me this a stepping stone and learning experience. I'm building skills and experience as I go.

You can build one with 10 bucks for a domain and 9.99 per month for hosting.

Get a good free wordpress theme and build your site yourself. Write your content yourself and promote your site through forums and social media. That's a strategy for not sp3nding much money but it is hard work.

I prefer to outsource all that and pay for my traffic.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks Jan. You outlined exactly what I have done. I've already purchased a domain and hosting. I downloaded a free Wordpress theme (one that Erica recommended) and have setup all the security, plugins, etc. Now I'm just starting to research my first review. I guess I do have a business plan (just not as formal as some others).

    1. think outside the box, amazon affiliate program is not the only one
    2. as a full time dad with a full time job, i suggest you do not do import business.

if you willing to take advice from a young people, then:

i heard from other people that accountant work may be outsource to VA (virtual assistant), i am not sure if this is the case, but i am sure many people take this advantage to steal some time from their full time job. so i guess you can take this advantage start internet business and start the transformation long term.

to answer your questions, as i state in point one, amazon affiliate program may or may not be for you, my suggestion is, as you have a passion, why not start a blog, many successful bloger out there, you can contact them via email and ask them for a step by step guide by saying you are a newbie. i am sure you will get a reply.

I know that a lot of people think Amazon affiliate marketing is an easy way to make good money, but I suggest there is a better way.

Don't give up just because you have found problems in your research into importing from China.

I have helped hundreds to enter the high profit world of importing, and they have found it quite painless.

Some report that on their first attempt they have made substantial profits, such as 300% margin and more on small orders. That is the best way to start importing, and then progress to bigger and better things.

If you want some ideas, have a look at my thread: Ask Me Anything About Product Sourcing And Importing For Profit. ― Veteran Importer Here.

You might like to post there any of the problems or questions that arose when you did your research.
