A cool way to structure upsells
So here is a cool way to do upsells. When the customer clicks the buy button, send them to the "order customisation" page, and offer an upsell (or perhaps a choice of 2, or 3 tops). Then send them to the payment gateway and finalise the payment.
Now, when they come back to the thankyou page, thank them for thier business, and tell them there is something else they might want to see. Now offer them another upsell. Again, if they take it, take them to the "order customisation" page, offer 1 upsell, and send them to the payment gateway.
This thankyou page should also have a "No Thanks" button, and if they click it, offer a downsell. If they take it... you guessed it, "customize" the order, and payment gateway. When they come back to the new thank you page, you can offer them more.
There is no limit to the number of times you can do this (except for the number of products), because each time you are thanking them for thier business, and the last transaction is clearly over. They can stop the process any time they want by just navigating away. No one gets annoyed, and you get to offer upsells to people in a buying mindset.
One more addition to this, if you can find a payment gateway that will actually get them to create an account, and save thier details... this is obviously a big plus. For example I use SetCom, so the first time my customer goes there, they have to enter all the usual stuff, plus a password. Next time they go there, all they do is enter the email and password, and click buy.
If you don't have that much stuff to sell, google PLR or resell rights... you can get the resell rights to some decent stuff pretty cheap (you will have to sift through the rubbish though).
Enjoy
