What good would be another brand new IM/MMO forum to build a business off of?

Hello Warriors,

Just as the thread title suggests, how good is the idea of building a business around a new IM/MMO forum?

Of course, I know that it can't be generic, at least not in the beginning. It could probably start off by focussing on offline marketing or affiliate marketing, and then adding other categories to the site. But, is it something worth spending effort on? If yes and also, how should I go about generating more activity on the site on a limited budget?

TIA.

This is a hard path to go down...

I personally reckon you just need big names to endorse it and actually be apart of it.

That's how most paid forums are created... by having real experts who are active and sharing their own knowledge and strategies.

I didn't mean a paid forum. I mean a forum like WarriorForum itself.

I reckon my usage of the term 'to build a business off of' might have caused you to think so though.

It can be very difficult - but I think you are in a unique position and it might well be worth a shot.

I've known several excellent marketers who began forums in the past 10-15 years. Most of the ones that thrived - or even survived - were a bonus or 'study group' for a particular product or method sold by that person. The great majority of new MMO or "IM" forums that I've seen crop up have not done well - have struggled to find members, etc.

BUT - every day on this forum we see people joining who have unique IM problems...and they are from India and other countries in that region of the world.

The explosion of IM in India is going to continue and I think a forum aimed at that demographic could do very well. I've wondered in the past if there were marketing forums aimed at other than English-first-language demographics and I honestly don't know if they exist or not.

I think you have a unique opportunity as an experienced marketer in a country where use of the internet for business is exploding.

Building a business around a new forum here in 2015? Probably suicide. If you have an existing project with enough traffic to populate a new forum, maybe.

You "could" do it, IF you have a plan. And execute it.

We are now in our 15th year as a general business forum, however, along the way we've had many "study groups", private forums, and sub-forums.

The IM/MMO could work, simply go through here the last 90 days, look for the most asked questions and start your new forum off with the ANSWERS to those questions.

Be prepared to have several "mods" or monitors, because fighting spam is a daily operation.

I think there is room for several more forums, but, you'll have like a New York minute (an American expression for a very short amount of time)...

to establish it and have a COMPELLING reason why people would want to visit.

Good luck, it isn't easy, but it CAN be profitable.

      • You Better Have a Unique Hook (a niche that's not already being done ...or done to death).
      • You Better Have a Proven and tested Traffic Generator in place.
      • You Better Have enough Sticky Content to Keep them and Tasty/Addictive content to keep them coming back.
Other than that it's probably pretty easy.

Summary: A forum these days is not a ... "build it and they will come" type situation. Unless you're just looking for a 'quiet' hobby.

I do not want to dash anyone's dreams but to me this is a daunting task. One that I think is taking the hard path to making a sustainable income online. Not that any of the stuff is easy to begin with !!

But if you think you are cut out for it then I would adhere to some of the stuff The Niche Man so aptly refers to above.

Thats a good simple outline to follow with those 3 main points
