If you're looking to market online, you'll need some basic skills at the very least. Affiliate marketing is a great place to start. I'll give you some simple steps to begin.

First and foremost, don't expect overnight success. Internet marketing is a skill that takes time to learn. Take it slow, build on your knowledge each and everyday. Don't overwhelm yourself with too much information as once.

Take the time to learn one skill, then put it into action. You probably won't be great at it starting off, but no one is. So just fix things as you go along, don't stress too much about getting everything "perfect" before you start taking action. Nothing will ever be perfect.

Make sure you take it seriously. This is a business, not a hobby. Treat it like you would a normal job. Put in the time it deserves and it will pay you better than a job ever could.

So, here are some simple steps you can take now.

1. Find a product to sell you believe in with a decent commission payout.
2. Focus solely on mastering one single traffic source to bring in customers.
3. Learn how to build an email list. (it can be your most valuable asset)

The first thing you should know is that there are a number of ways you can go to make legitimate, long-term money online -- not just one. These things include but are not limited to the following: niche blogging (review-site model, most common), publishing stories on Kindle, becoming a ghostwriter and writing content for other marketers, having your own private label rights store and more. Explore these and figure out what you like. Once you do, find a program that teaches you specifically what you want to know.

I'd like to suggest you get a coach or mentor to teach you the basics and point you in the right direction. My big mistake when I started was in thinking I could manage on my own, and I was wrong. Finally, I realized I wasn't going to get anywhere without a mentor --- someone to tell me what to do and show me how to do it. Now, at last, I'm making progress. Good Luck and . . . keep smiling!

As much as you can. There is no set amount of time.

Find a couple of people in your area of business that are getting good results and copy what they are doing.

A lot of people will tell you what to do but very few actually have it themselvs.

How can you give something you don't have?

Perhaps your first step can be done by reading up on the different types of platforms. The main ones that are being used by people are:
1. Email Marketing
2. Blogs/Websites
3. Social Media Marketing

Personally i use email marketing myself and i would recommend that to you as well. The benefit from email marketing is that you are able to collect a list of your potential customer's contact information, allowing you to re-establish your connection with the customer even after they have made a purchase.

I think you should be a sponge and soak up what is being offered here. Listen to some of the wiser folks here who have a track record and contribute solidly. And have been for an extended period of time.

You will start to pickup who these people are after awhile by simply observing.

Start simple and move towards complexity.

Get a Wordpress website set up on a cheap hosting plan and start blogging about something you are passionate about.

Research and learn each new topic as and when you need it.

For example, you might decide to add an email list to your blog, so research email marketing.

Use that blog as your launching pad, if it does well then that's great, though if it doesn't, it served its purpose of helping you learn and move onto something more viable.
