Publishing Kindle Books using Open Office

I've decided to start publishing Kindle books on Amazon, and don't want to put money into something like KD Pro right now until I see how it goes. I found a Kindle template for Open Office that seems to work well for the Kindle format, but I want to do it in other formats too, especially MOBI and EPUB.

There was someone here once who had a free book on how to format Amazon books. Is that still around, or does anyone have any free resources they can pont me to? I'm really bootstrapping right now. I want to get a few holiday recipe books up really quickly.

  Ditto for the advice to use the Amazon link for information. Just to reiterate that it can be done: I have three books on Amazon Kindle right now. They are heavy with illustrations, and have all been made with OpenOffice (now LibreOffice).
