I want to have something custom made in China. How do I start?

Hello

I want to have a clothing item made in china. I have made a prototype but its rather crude.
I know about made-in-china.com and alibaba. But do I just start contacting people and asking if they can make it?

I'd like to have them make a few samples and then I would make adjustments before making the final version.

Are there any courses on this?

Thanks a ton.

    Hi,

I remember that in the last month there were a few interesting podcasts by Spencer Haws on Amazon FBA. One of them was this:

Podcast 99: How Greg Mercer Built a Multi-Million Dollar Amazon FBA Empire - Niche Pursuits

I don't know if it was that one, but in one of them they discussed how they contacted suppliers in China through Alibaba and got their products created...

    Cheers

You have to go to one of Mercer's blogs to see how he contacted Alibaba to get the products created.

If you go to that trouble you will find some good ideas, but if you know nothing about sourcing from Alibaba (which is not a lot less than Greg Mercer knows, just like most importing gurus), you will probably be impressed with the process.

      But beware:

      • There is no suggestion about how to know which of the hundreds of suppliers is an actual manufacturer, but most of those listed are not, even though they claim to be.
      • There is a naive suggestion to request that payment for the full order could be made via PayPal.
      • There is no warning about the way scammers successfully get around PayPal's charge back system if they send a package containing sawdust or pebbles.
      • A question on the blog regarding cost of using PayPal has so far been ignored.
There are risks involved in getting products custom made in China. I have seen cases in which the new product was put on the market by other Chinese companies before the designer of the new product even got a prototype.

There are ways around those problems. Ask me a question on my thread: Ask Me Anything About Product Sourcing And Importing For Profit. ― Veteran Importer Here. and I'll be happy to give details. It will be seen there by many other warriors who might also benefit by the information I provide.

IMO OP is doing it wrong.

You have no idea If the product will sell.

Start small and local (manufacturing) even If it cost more than China from the start. Test sales. If sales are successful, then, and only then, outsource to a bulk manufacture with a lower cost (not necessarily China).

This is exactly how US based Lolly Wolly Doodle (clothes business) banks millions ($$).

This way you have way faster turnaround and narrow down the products that have great sales and the products that don't sell. Keep the winners, dump the losers (before buying/outsourcing in bulk). Repeat...

    Here's some interesting stuff:

China Manufacturing Contracts: OEM, CM, and ODM Arrangements

Type 3: Original Design Manufacturing (ODM). As Chinese factories have become more technically competent, foreign buyers have started entering into arrangements where the Chinese factory does some or all of the design work for the product. There are many variations on the ODM approach.
