Hey Warriors,

I read plenty of threads here praising the power of Dragon Naturally Speaking.

More often than not, it's at least a $79 - $99 product, and...

even at those prices, worth every penny.

Well, if you are on the fence yet, here's your chance to grab a copy of the latest version for just $29.99.

    Scot -

Thanks for posting that - do you use DNS? I've been looking at the preferred version but this standard price is tempting.

Anyone know the advantages of "preferred" (except for excel)?

I've been using DNS for the past many months now, and previously I used to look at it skeptically but after being convinced by a friend to give it a try, I've never looked back and sometimes I wonder why I wasted so much time earlier. I consider it a valuable tool to enhance my productivity.

I've Dragon Naturally speaking, since 2 years or so. But haven't started using it in a big way yet. Because every time I speak, it types the wrong words. May be this will improve as we train the software more and more? What do you guys think? Are you getting all the words typed perfect?

    Thanks...

Yeah, the same thing is happening to me. When I first got this software, It was working perfectly and I had very few errors I had to change. But now all of a sudden, it has gotten completely messed up where just about every word is nowhere near what I'm saying! :p

I probably have to go back and retrain the software again.

When it was working fine, DNS, was a very valuable tool since I literally was able to get done up to 5 articles (250-350 words) in 30 minutes or less (including editing and submitting)!

Just did some general training for DNS, and I am now typing with my Dragon naturally speaking software. Oh my god, at last I am making some improvement with the software. But it's making some mistakes and I'm using back-spaces a lot. Need to find what the commands are for deleting last words and sentences. How do I start first word of the sentence with capitals. Where are the commands situated?

        Thanks...

Funny I got an email with it for 34 CDN. But when I went to pay it was 54 and with shipping 80. I found it on ebay from the same guy I bought a previous version from for less. Odd, maybe they had a glitch.

Just for fun I tried it again, went to the page via the link and added it to my cart. And it went to $49. Well, Tiger Direct lost a sale there. Sheesh

Standard won't work with some programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Outlook express, etc.)

Here's a product matrix that compares all versions.

ALSO - If you have a 64-bit Vista machine, you'll have to upgrade to version 10.1!

Training is the key to getting Dragon Naturally Speaking to work like magic for you. I've found that it's best to spend a few hours training the software using the resources provided and uploading several of your documents, so it learns your writing style.

But here's something they don't tell you... if you upgrade your microphone, you have to retrain the software.

I just purchased the wireless headset Nuance recommends and couldn't wait to get started. But then I realized DNS was spitting out words and sentences that just didn't make any sense, much like it does right out of the box without training.

I had put some thought into this myself because it would be great for transcribing. I couldn't think of a way to make that work. If it is someone elses voice you couldn't do the initial set up because you have to read certain things into the microphone. If it's your own voice on video and you put your microphone up to the speaker, would it work? hmmmm not sure.

The only thing that I could think of is to make the video.

        Upload it to a site.

Rip the mp3 from the video.

Convert mp3 to wav with Audacity.

Import the wav to DNs and see what it can do!

After you've recorded the video, you can extract the audio data and save it as a format the DNS can read (like MP3 or WAV) and then have DNS transcribe it for you.

I did just buy DNS 10 -- they've been advertising their $50 promo on the radio station I listen to here -- actually, for a while.

Personally, between TigerDirect & Buy.com -- go with Buy.com -- mail-in rebates are a royal pain. Not worth it in most consumer advocates' eyes because the companies so often turn them down as incomplete -- and, if you do manage to get the rebate, it's waaaaay down the road.

Get on Nuance's (makers of DNS) mailing list. They called me up in January offering me DNS 10 Preferred for $99. ALAS, I didn't have the money at the time. And they will send you interesting offers from time to time as well. One of my friends -- who had just bought STD -- was nearly screaming at me to take them up on their offer.

I would get Preferred if you can afford it. I think the extras are prolly worth it. I plan to upgrade at some point.

Lance -- thanks for the info about 10.1 and Vista 64. That explains why I'm not a raving fan at the moment (though I have used both DNS in the past, as well as MS Office voice recognition software -- and someone told me there is VR in Vista now, as well...).

Now, off to hunt down the upgrade...

    Live JoyFully!

      Hey Mukul,

      Check on eBay.

There are almost always dozens and dozens of copies on eBay for very cheap, perhaps you can find one locally that way.

I've also seen the latest version on sale at Staples for around $30-$40 a copy various times over the past year or so.

I'm posting this reply right now using DNS.

The only training I've done is the basic training when you open the program. Which takes about five minutes.

It will require a little bit of editing, but it's super easy to use. I highly recommend DNS version 10 (version 10.1 if you're on a Vista 64-bit machine).
