Feedback on first FB ad campaign

Hi all,

After working in an agency for several years I've decided to go freelance with digital marketing. As the leap is still fairly daunting, I wanted to run my plans for my first Facebook ad campaign by you much more talented folk, in the hopes of gaining some feedback.

(Feel free to rip it to shreds):

In a nutshell, the plan is to:

Set up a Facebook business manager account for the first time to promote my digital marketing agency.

My plan is to use a Facebook lead ad targeted at small business who've expressed an interest in digital marketing. The lead ad would be a video of 5 marketing strategies for 2017 with the option to click through for a .pdf transcript of the video, complete with 5 additional tips.

I would put an end-board on the video pointing to my website and would do a small 2 sentence sell of the website within the .pdf at the end, but wouldn't feature my website in the text copy of the ad.

Does this sound like a good idea? Am I missing a trick and should I add my website into the ad copy as well? Or would that likely be overselling and break Facebook's T's & C's.

(particularly if there's anything here which may violate FB's T's & C's).

  • I think it could work but I'd maybe try targeting one specific industry that has a. high average lifetime customer value that way you know they have the budget for your services.
  • I agree with Steve, and you can add the URL into your ad copy as well. There's nothing against that. In fact I like to add the link in the copy at least twice. Once above the fold and once right at the end.

Apart from that, as long as you have disclaimer, privacy policy and terms of service, (FB have really been cracking down) you should be fine.

    • Thanks, I have all those things except the disclaimer. Does that go in the ad or the website and what should it say?

Also, can you have more than one CTA in an ad? E.g. a line of copy pointing to the lead magnet then a second line pointing to marketing services?
  • Do you have a FB page for your business?

I would suggest setting up a page and promoting it through participation. You might get more targeted traffic, albeit a smaller amount.

FB ads are tough even for experienced marketers.

Find your target market on FB and start sharing.

My only change would be more of a teaser on the front and heavier content on the back. So, maybe three tips interspersed with teasers for the other seven. Just my opinion but a PDF transcript holds no value for me. You might offer an option of video, text, or audio.

    • Thanks Brent.

What is participation? That's new to me.

I haven't set up my Facebook page yet, but I do plan on doing this.
  • It would be good to keep your websites name mentioned in ad copy and that too multiple time. This website will represent your brand so no harm in it at all.

Your idea (FUNNEL) is cool though. Start working on it.
  • I think your idea of:

My plan is to use a Facebook lead ad targeted at small business who've expressed an interest in digital marketing. The lead ad would be a video of 5 marketing strategies for 2017 with the option to click through for a .pdf transcript of the video, complete with 5 additional tips.

    is a great idea.

I think the key will be if you are able to reach the right target audience for a reasonable CPC.
  • What has been your experience?
Do FB ads work? Is traffic any good in your experience ? (As in.. yes they like your page.. but do they BUY?!)

    All the best!
