Content Updates - Website: How?

Hello! Internally, we have ALWAYS struggled with gathering content for our company website (News, Sliders, Etc...). We have a core group of 5 individuals, which basically encompasses all aspects of our organization. We start of with great intentions, but then due to previous commitments, and busy schedules, we never follow through with updates, thus, rendering our site archaic. What are some good tips to keep everyone on track, and perhaps turn this into something that people actually want to do? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

You need something that holds your feet to the fire.
And since you're having troubles with this, I can guess either there is no monetary gains in the effort, or the monetary gains are not a driving factor.

I will venture to guess it's the first...not because it what I assume your issue is, but rather what I have seen my issue with.

Each member needs to have a clear cut task list that is accomplishable, and shareable. You know where you stand, as well as where the others stand. This way, as the content is generated, each knows they are carrying their own weight, for themselves, and for each other.

Trello is a great tool for this. Each member has a board, and each week each member has multiple tasks within their board, and as they knock off each task (like creating content) their list shrinks. It doesn't have to be a race, you want quality after all. But you do want completion, and you can mark as such. For example, create a bonus trello board for 5 extra items that others can choose to do if they wish to help a slower member.

This was just a quick idea, and I hope it at least gets the creative juices flowing.
Keep posted on your solution as I am very curious to see what other ideas there are.

The website doesn't bring you any leads? If not, what's the point of having it?

Making a plan in advance will keep everyone on track. Have a meeting every three to six months and brainstorm topics. Assign each member a specific topic idea for each post/article and give them a due date.

Otherwise, they'll sit down and say, "I don't know what I should write about."

But if they already know their topic the first hurdle has been crossed.

Give them a list of article types to work from:

List articles - 7 Ways to xx

    Pros and Cons of xx

    An Easy Way to xx

Why you Never want to xx

The Number One Reason People xx

Ezine articles has some good examples.

Hopefully, they'll eventually get more creative -- but these types of articles are a good way to get started.

IMO, your company has more than just a "content problem."

If all your employees are too busy in their schedules to present the face of your company in a positive, helpful, customer-centric way via your web site, it suggests that your prospects and customers (who see and visit your site) are not a very high priority in your daily business execution. It suggests that being "busy" with daily tasks is a higher priority than customer (people) care and service.

Maybe some core changes are needed in your business mission. When you really think about it, great content is easy when you focus on your audience and their needs/desires. It quite difficult to get helpful content out of people that don't have customers and "helpfulness" on their minds.

Rose hit on the two biggies, one of which you already hinted at.

"Due date" are the magic words. That and 'editorial calendar'.

You said yourself that one of the problems was other commitments. If this is a commitment with defined assignments and due dates, it may help.

I totally agree with Eric Michalsen. Each member must have task and plant clearly. I'm trying with Trello

    Hello

Plan a clear strategy for each week and month - how many articles / blogs / PRs / News or content are you going to publish on your website.
What are the top most important topics your prospects would like to read?
Write quality content. Word count might vary from one content (news) to another content (blog). Idea work count for blogs, 800-2000. That's what Google suggests.
You can't do it in-house, outsource to one expert. But plan for some investment here. That will definitely help you getting traffic and leads online.

    Hope, that helps.

    Good luck.
