Best way to get early readers for a blog?

Would love to hear what your favorite marketing channels are for getting your first 10 or 100 readers/subscribers with zero budget. Any tips or tricks can help!

We're currently just posting on Facebook but would love to expand and have some fun trying other channels .

What is your niche and are you posting in facebook groups or do you have your own group ? For zero budget Quora is pretty good at the moment but you need to be consistent at it.

Oh, the irony. Your blog is about testing FB ads, but you can't find a little money to actually try paid FB ads for your blog.

If I wanted people to take my blog seriously, I would practice what I preach.

Here's another suggestion. Use a sig file with your blog URL on IM forums where people interested in FB ads can be found. Like this one.

Emails may not seem that important to you, but unless you are a news site, it's hard to build a core audience without email marketing. By capturing emails, you'll increase the number of people coming back to your site and sharing your content.

    Good Luck ,brennanc!

When you say " zero budget ", shameless spamming the easiest way to do it. There are traditional methods for organic traffic, individual visitors etc. But those are very slow compared to what you get from aggressive paid marketing

  • Facebook posting is best. You can in twitter, Reddit and other book marking sites.
Answer posting sites can also help you.

Marketing channels for finding readers/subscribers for a new site?

How about the sites/blogs those readers already read?

People have already mentioned FB groups and Q&A sites like Quora. How about blogs which discuss your topic? Intelligent commenting and eventually guest posting get you exposure. So will posting good content on a site like LinkedIn. Making valuable contributions on niche-related forums is another way to gain favorable exposure.

The big trick to marketing a new site with zero budget is to get your name out there in a way that offers value. People in your target audience will start seeing your name everywhere, building an image of authority, credibility and likability.

Hey! Depending on what your blog niche is, Pinterest is a great channel to get early readers to any kind of blog.

Pinterest is not really a social media platform; it's more of a visual search engine. A lot of people go there to look up homes, travel tips, cooking and beauty tricks, whatever you can think of.

Another way to get early readers to a blog is to set up an email list by providing something of value to your potential new readers, resulting in them willingly giving you their email address. You can easily do this through content marketing. You can then promote your blog posts to your new email subscribers and encourage them to share and promote your blog.

    Hope this helps!

Develop a mailing list first, then send them all to the blog the same day , in anticipation of some article. Then you will have common interest and activity, right from the start.

No one is going to stick around a blog or forum that has little activity.

You have to get a bunch of people excited, and send them all at the same time, to create instant activity, excitement, and live conversation.

Then ride that wave hard and dont let up until its rocking!

In other words :" Keep them talking". You do this by rapidly submitting engaging responses, that even engage more people, in as close to real time as possible.

Stay on it until real time responses are happening, even without your input.

    In any event:

Dont send anyone to your stuff, until there are alot of people are talking and excited about the same idea together.

It just wont work otherwise, because the basic reason people come to interactive websites, is so they can "interact".

    Back to the basics:

Key= "Prep a mailing List" (ie; get them excited about a subject and anticipating a chance to have dialogue about it) , and then "Send them all there the same day".

People want responses, and social engagement and interactivity... People want "instant" gratification for all of those things.

Why are you here, right now?

Answer: Because people respond, and you can feel engaged and a "part of" something. You can get instant interactivity from other members... You can get answers, and input, in almost real time.

If no one responded for days, you probably wouldnt come back.

On another note... if only ONE person responded for days... you probably wouldnt maintain interest for long.

People wont post, without any engagement then come back 3 days later to see if anyone responded.

They want to be a part of a "party", when they join a blog or forum...

If no one is at the party, the simply go home and say "That party sucked".

You have to create ongoing, quick responding activity, to keep people engaged long enough for it to catch on.

"If you build it, they will come", does not work for forums and blogs... When they come, there had better be other people there, who are active.

Sorry, the answer isnt easy, but its the answer. Spend a month or two "prepping" a few hundred people, via email or forum posts or whatever. Get them anticipating and excited... then send them all there at the very same time.

    That equals a "winner".

Then its up to you to stay on top of it, like a flea on a dog, until it is cruising.

Keep the engaging dialogue flowing until it grows to where it flows , even without you.

Do I know if you can do this or not? No. But I do know that if you CAN, and if you follow my advice... then that is the answer to success.

    Again:

NEVER send someone to a ghost town. Wont work.

    What I suggested WILL work.

This comes from a guy guy who made half a million dollars from running a forum for a few years, and believe it or not.... he did it by accident ; just because he was there for the same reason everyone else was... To talk about our passions.

I learned alot from that. Take it or leave it. Its the real advice. This is the juice man.

Nobody wants to be a part of something where NOTHING is happening... you gotta make it happen first, bring the group together first... then let em loose on a forum or blog... where they can share their common loves, passions, knowledge and insights... and grow together!

It wont happen by the trickle effect... you have to make this a social event that blows up from day one, and make it a party that is awesome and never ends... If someone knocks on the door, and there isnt any real exciting party there- you are done from the start.

You can do it. Develop the mailing list, or develop a few hundred excited people first, and send them all there on the same day.

    That will WORK

You need 100-200 people to hit at the "same time". Then you will have conversation, interactivity, and social engagement... all the things that makes social type websites work... Without that? You need to find another strategy, because thats how this works.

I know I went overboard, but hope this helped. Its absolutely the truth.

    -JD

Ps. In all of my years at the warrior forum, I have never asked for a single "Thanks". Never ever even ONCE, and Im not asking now... but you should kick yourself in the keister if you dont thank me for this one.

This is about as real as it gets.

The success key here is : "critical mass".

Write blog post for other websites in exchange for relevant traffic. If they're well established odds are they have traffic and a good chance they might need a break from creating content for their own site/s.

Blogs, YouTube eh? As far as I know posting online is like going to the beach and pouring a bucket of ice into the ocean. Social media hordes say the opposite, right? Content creation is no longer a viable biz model if you want to pay your bills by making money online.

If you're talking content creation 'by the pound', I agree. Content creation, done very strategically in order to put one's name in front of the right audience with the implicit endorsement by the creator of that audience (think popular bloggers or podcasters) can be a valuable way to get those early readers for a blog.

Once there is some traction, and the confidence that goes with it, one can pursue other, more scalable methods.

I'll share the things I do. Of course they're not as effective as paying for ads, but I'm in the same boat as you and have 0 budget, so I try to keep it fully organic.

    - Email people a lot from the target market, or fill out forms on their blogs. A lot of testing is needed, but I've had email templates that sent as much as 20% of people to the link I've sent them. I think that's not a bad ratio.

    - Work social media. Granted, I'm the owner of a Saas built especially for this, but I do manage to engage and reach a big number of people from multiple accounts on a few networks, and the networks that are not yet integrated I work manually. I try to cover as many networks as possible, content creation is the hardest part and once content is created there's no reason to only post it on 1 or 2 networks.

    - Participate in communities such as this one, as many forums and sites as you can cover. While not technically forums, I count Reddit, Medium and Quora in here too, and I consuder them a must. Many sites will let you do some promo if you're a sensible and fair user who tries to contribute. My personal rule is min 80% value and max 20% promo. If there's no promo at all in the communities, you still benefit from developing personal relationships, and even if this product fails you have elevated your personal brand a little and will have it a little easier the next time.

    - Tons of beta user, coupons, deals and freebies sites can work in your advantage. I still haven't tried this one as I'm planning on doing that in a bigger push, but I have a list of about 50 working sites which I believe have good reputation and might help.

This is a lot of work. I'm a developer first and marketer second, and I'm still struggling and learning the ropes a lot, but I love, love, love not spending a dime on ads and I think these are the best free growth hacks you can apply.

    Cheers

As all the advice, posting on forums, forum sigs, maintain an active social media presence (twitter, insta, facebook, pinterest) and facebook ads etc.,

However, remember to not spread yourself out too thinly. Realise that most IM forums are dying on their feet - you only need to be on 1,2 maybe 3 MAX - and only the big ones where you can post around 5 messages a day. Then concentrate one or two social media channels where you can post consistently - maybe just Facebook and Instagram - wherever your demographic is. And then be consistent on these.

The worst thing you can do is try to become a presence on ALL forums and ALL social media channels, which could take you 8 hours a day to maintain.
