I want to create a series of training videos for my website using both screenshots and face to camera. Just wanted to know the best combination of software and best complete method that people use. Is it ok to just use an I Phone to create the face to camera videos and is camtasia the best way to create screenshot videos. Looking for the cheapest options to this whilst still getting the best quality I can. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Peter,
Using an iphone for face to camera is absolutely fine. Or you can use a web cam like the Logitech c920 (Hd quality) and fairly inexpensive.

As far as screencapture is concerned. If you're on a PC, Camtasia is the way to go, or if you're on a Mac I'd go for Screenflow 8.0. Really good value, get pro videos and really easy to use.

Camtasia do a version for Mac if you want an alternative.

If you specifically want screenshots(still image) as opposed to screencapture (moving images) you can create these within screenflow or camtasia, and you can create them for free using the operating system on your Mac or PC.

I'm on a mac and the screenshot key command is command+ shift +4 Drag to select the area you want to screenshot or hit zero and it will screenshot the current window.

Hope this helps. Have you got a mic?

    • Sharp to the point. Indeed, the set-up for a beginner should not have cost a lot. Concentrating on the content quality is the most important part. If you get traffic with that, then you can start improving the visual quality of the content.
  • Camtasia will do everything you need. I believe there was a recent promotion going around where you can (legally) get it for $20. Have a search on here or Google to see if it's still going. I've been using it for years and love it.

  • I use Windows Movie Maker to bring together screen captures, different video clips and create simple overlays as well as add any backing tracks you want. If you are working on a Windows machine, you can download Windows Movie Maker for free. You can then render the video in whatever format you want (streaming, MP4, etc...)

  • Hi Peter ,

you can start recording Using your iphone camera. You don't have to be a video pro to get great video, either. Anyone can record an excellent screencast with a just a little practice. And you probably have the technology in your pocket (Hint: smartphone camera) to record a great video if you've chosen to do a role play or demonstration video.
