Hi all, I'm planning on creating a cooking channel on youtube and have two questions:

1)
How do you know when a niche is too narrow?
In other words, everybody is talking about speaking to a very specific niche but I'm worried about going too narrow.
For example, let's say you want to make a cooking channel specifically about how to cook desserts with an instant pot, because instant pots are very popular right now etc and you start making content and in 1 year the instant pot falls out of fashion, then the entire channel is basically no longer relevant. If I make a channel just about cooking desserts it might not be narrow enough. How do you know when it's too broad or too narrow?

2)
What's the best way (paid or free) to research search trends on youtube and Pinterest?
For example if I wanted to find out what the most popular recipes currently are that are being searched for on youtube and Pinterest specifically.

Thanks guys.

    1. Keyword.
Common keyword vs. long tail keyword in your tittle, description and tags will either broad or narrow your niche. So, you better give your channel name with broader one, and narrow your niche in the mean time with the long tail keyword.

First of all, thank you for your reply, some of the youtube links about trending research are very helpful.

In regards to the channel niche, I'm not sure I'm following what you're saying.
If i understand you correctly, you're suggesting to keep the channel name broad then use long tail keywords in title/description/tags to attract niche searches?

I was reading that when someone views your channel they should be able to immediately tell what your channel is about, kinda like an elevator pitch. If it's too broad it might be difficult to do.

You're suggesting to call the channel something broad like "Easy Desserts Recipes" rather than "Easy Instant Pot Dessert Recipes" and then just niche it by using keywords like "instant pot" and related words in the title/description/tags?

It depends on you. How do you want to select your market? How big/small do you want it to be? Why not give them both a test? You can re-create a single video into 2 slightly different videos an use one for each channel. It needs a testing to see it clear.

What I meant was for multiple narrow niches that can be put in a single broader niche. So, it really depends on what you want to target.

Also people do not always rely on your channel name to get what they look for in Youtube.

Perhaps you can also make it unique like "Murano's Easy Desserts Recipes"

    Good luck!

Do both and see which works best . . . create a general cooking channel, then plenty of other narrower niche channels, and cross-promote etc.

Building a tribe can work great . . . I happen to know of one of the millionaire "big IM guru's" who has a tribe on Paleo diets.

Cooking and recipes, etc. are in the top 10 of internet marketing niches. The more targeted you can make your channel the better for you, as the bigger your tent the more competition you will be facing.

I don't have a 'favorite' for researching a niche. But you can do a 'trend research tools' search on Google and choose something that you're comfortable with.

In any niche that you choose to talk about it is always good to use a keyword search to to determine how competitive a topic is. Whenver you do a search on youtube they give you search term suggestions that users are likely to search for.So that is a goldmine of in itself to come up with topics.

I would also try using long tail keywords and also produce content based off of searchers intent to attract searchers that are more likely interested in your topic.
