Unpublishing page before implementing 301 redirect - lost authority?

I'm working with a web dev team who use sitecore and have been told that they need to unpublish a page on the site before implementing a 301 redirect to the closest most relevant page.
My question is, if we are unpublishing the page before implementing the 301 redirect, is authority then lost?

Yes. Better do a 301 redirect and then unpublish it

It really shouldn't matter unless you take too long to 301 the page after "unpublishing" it. It will just return a 404 error until you 301 it.

If pages immediately lost their authority every time a 404 happened, no website would ever have any authority because servers do go down temporarily - even Google's servers and crawlers (I think we have all seen page not found errors or similar errors in Search Console that were bogus when Google's server or crawler had a hiccup).
