When I think of digital marketing, I don't just assume the creative aspects (designing an infographic, writing a copy, etc). There's also the analytical stuff - trends, interests, among others. Here's a dig down of the top five crucial skills every digital marketer must possess.

An eye for design
Obviously, digital marketing is about showing eye candies to your intended reach. You must know basic design elements such as pantones, hex colour codes, typography, among others.

Solid fundamentals in marketing
Digital marketing isn't just creating a catchy poster to share on social media. You also need the fundamentals - AIDA, the BCG matrix, etc. I mean, you can't just launch a boosted tweet without knowing your target's psychographic details, right?

Analytics says it all
And this means you understand the data that's presented to you when you accessed your page insights. How much will you spend this year compared to last year, and what judgment are you making based on whatever data you have? According to your growth rate, what are your next steps? Things like those.

I would like to add that it's equally important to know how to use and understand the tools such as Facebook Manager, Google Ads, Google Analytics, Tag Manager.

And also to be able to create photos in photoshop, or similar.

Absolutely right but I think that fully dependent on Analytics is quit equal to loosing some other great opportunities. By a factor that every tool has its own prospective so with the passage of time one can use other extra efficient audit tools to get better verification of results and the result comparison can be drive from different resources/tools for better analysis.

Are you referring to using native analytics tools on each platform (like on FB business manager, Google ads etc)? Or external services/tools?

Not true. Or, perhaps, just misleading. Or is it "Too general" to be useful?

  • What may seem crucial to your online business, may not be as crucial to others for their online business. You can outsource the things you don't want to do and those experts will take care of your design aspects for you.

Focusing on growing your business and scaling it with automated processes. When you focus on too much details and wear too many "hats" in your online business, then you really losing focus of what's crucial to your online business. Your core focus is to help your target audience reach their goals and have them happily pay you for it.

For me digital marketing means strategy. Because all the channels are same for almost all domains but how you put them and reap your traction matters.

There was a post, now removed, which pointed out some errors, especially about your errors on design, and the criticism came from an agency in the business DOING what you advocate. I expect this to be deleted too.

Constructive and truthful criticism should be allowed, but if you choose to censor, than that is what the WF will become.

PS. Need to copy and paste this with the other post which was deleted for my WF archives.

Gordon, as you should know, commenting on removed posts only serves to take a thread off topic. But just for your information, the OP had nothing to do with that particular removal.

If you have any constructive criticism or relevant comments on the points made, please feel free to let rip.

  • I would also add:

Branding - People join people, not a product or service. So, it is important to build and maintain a solid reputation in your industry.

Adding Value - Show people that you have what they need to solve their problem. Don't come off as if you're only trying to sell to them. Instead, provide them with knowledge and show them that you are an expert in the field who can actually help them achieve their goals.

Copywriting - A good marketer is a skilled copywriter. He has to know how to use words in a way that get people to take action.

My top 3 list of digital marketing skills are:

    1) Know your numbers, and what they mean (cost per lead/sale/click/etc)

    2) Remaining profitable even with BAD marketing

    3) Knowing how to lower your cost of paid advertising
