Economy Affecting Domain Name Availability?

Just a quick question to all you domainers out there. I'm not in the business of domaining but I do own quite few that needed to be renewed this morning. Out of curiosity I did a search on two domains I've been eye balling for a long time.

The result yielded: Deleted and Available again.
Of course I took them both immediately. I did a more comprehensive search on several more domains I've been wanting. To my surprise, most of them were available.

Could it be that the economy had forced many of the owners to let their domains expire? Or is there some other supply and demand trend in the industry going on?

  • Of course it does. I've shed about 1/3 of my projects as I realize I do not have the time to put into them so I've finally just decided to let them go and focus on my core sites. Most marketers have a handful of domains they want to do something with but never seem to get to it.

Sad to say, yes, I let quite a few .info and .us and .biz domains go in my portfolio this year. It came down to economics. If I wasn't making any return on the domain itself, or if there wasn't a proven potential to make money soon by selling it or developing it, I had to give it up. Any money saved is redirected to other expenses. IMHO this has been a tough year because a few clients are also cutting back, so naturally that directly affects my cashflow. Oh well.

I gave myself a kick this year as well and let things go if I wasn't actually using them. I had a sit down with myself and said, "Jill, are you really going to do something with this, or was it the Vodka that made you buy it?"

      LOL

Yes, absolutely. It is a buyers market right now, as many good domain names are being dropped, more than ever.
