How much should I offer for this website? Or should I start a brand-new site?

I'm looking to buy [name removed by moderator]. It's a blog in the outdoor/extreme sports space. It has a 32 URL Rating and a 16 Domain Rating but it looks like a large # of referring domains are in unknown locations. How could that be? Also the most known domains are in India. Is that bad in terms of monetization?

I am going to get the Google Analytics and Search Console data from the owner but I want to have a better idea of what I should be looking for and offering on the site beforehand. I just know how long is takes to build the domain authority of a brand-new site.

Thanks for any and all help!!!

Price would be based upon how much
income it generates. If it is affordable to
you and it is generating passive income
then you should probably go for it. To me,
the backlinks from India would indicate
that something spammy is going on, but
you will need to make that determination
    for yourself.

The domain rating, the url rating, and everything else you mention is irrelevant, if you're buying this because it makes money. In that case, all that matters, is how much is it currently making and how much has it made each of the past 24 months.

If you're buying it to use it in your SEO strategies, the type of backlinks and where they come from matters... but not in terms of country but page. A backlink on a page that has no backlinks of its own does you little good. A backlink on a page with many outgoing links does you no good.

Ideally, you'd get a backlink from Google's home page... You would, probably, not need another link for all keywords except, maybe, for insurance, mortgage or attorney.

Also important, are the revenue numbers going up or down over that 2 year period? Don't take "COVID" as an excuse for a downward trend. If anything, numbers should have gone up during COVID for most websites.

Also, what is the trend over that 2 year period? Are revenues increasing or decreasing?

For most websites, numbers increased over the last year due to COVID lockdowns, so factor that into your decision, as well.

    Hi Emily

Flippa has a buyers guide which explains all the due diligence step you should consider before bidding on a site.

Look at the keywords bringing traffic to that site, then know the income that the site generates. Usually a site that generates 200 per month can cost 2000. It is usually 10x the profit generated per month.

Where do you find sites that are selling at 10x the monthly profit? I am seeing more like upwards of 30x.

I've seen them go as low as that but it is pretty rare and only done by people trying to dump a website (red flag).

More typical is at least 24x on the low end and 36x being the standard. Some sites with stellar track records in evergreen niches (usually where they are selling their own branded products) go for 48x - 60x.

As for me, i would only buy a site if it has already good and established traffic and also earning money. The best marketplace i know to buy websites already making money is Flippa....

if a website you want to buy does not earn money already, it is better to start a new one by yourself instead.....

Agreed, I guess it would depend on how much you want the domain. If it doesn't have a strong backlink profile, or anything like that, I would agree that it's easier just register another domain.

Absolutely, I've spoken to a few people asking $10k+ for domains with extremely poor backlink profiles. Many of them are still unsold, I wonder why

@tnob yes, there are some free backlink checker tools available online.

My advice is to have a site that doesn't take up all your time. Managing your site and content should be a pleasing job. Something you love to do everyday. Otherwise you will eventually quit that tiresome job.

Your only focus should be how much money that blog is making. Rest of the parameters are not that much important.

I mean't to say you need to bid for that price. Anything high would mean you are paying more...Sure, you could bid for 24x or 50x the site. But are you getting a good deal? probably not. If site visitor traffic is consistent then bid high otherwise stick to the conservative bid of 10x.

How much you should offer for a website would depend on the profitability. If the site generates about $5,000 per year you should sell for $15,000. This is a fair and good amount to sell your website for. The person you are selling to will make the initial selling amount and the profit you are selling it for easily over a 5 or ten year period. The person you are selling to will probably add more content outsourced or personally that will provide even more value and profit for them immediately. You are selling the authority of the site as well, and time of years into the site also. The price of the site you are selling should always be at least double the amount of income it generates per year or month etc.

  • Most websites sold always have bad backlinks into the website and this can hurt website ranking on Google.

So, be careful. Most people use black hat methods to build the domain authority of a website and quickly sell it.

I have seen this mentioned a lot in comments for listings.

Is there a way to find out where back links are coming from?

I've personally always focused on building new websites. It can take time but I find it better (for me at least)
