Monetizing a Site Through Financial Contributions

Has anyone tried to utilize this method as a stream of income for their site? I run a sports site that utilizes the Project 24 method with some of its content. I'm thinking about having a donation hook at the end of the post explaining why the reader should donate to the outlet.

Can we see the site and the content? Why financial contributions versus monetizing through selling ad space and affiliate marketing?

It's sports content. Affiliate marketing and ad space can be unreliable.

Wouldn't you, then, be better off using ads too?

I use ads as well, but I don't want to rely on just that. Only asking for advice, never intended to knock ads and affiliate income. I just think that it's not good to solely rely on just one income stream.

here is where I think there needs to be an amount of education... Regardless of what you ADD to your website.. your website itself with all of its available channels of income is a single stream of income.

If you were to add say a youtube channel, THAT becomes a second stream of income, follow?

A simple method to doing just that is to create Youtube videos... and then you can transcribe the the video content and create posts... 1 piece of content becomes 2... throw in some images over to Instagram... and a quote or 2 over on twitter and post both he post and the video on Facebook... and THEN you start to diversify your income streams.

Stability is dependent on audience size... increase your audience across multiple platforms will increase the overall stability in your revenue streams - and in the case of Youtube... add to your income stream once you reach the level needed to get paid for ads.

              Hope that Helps!

I would not consider donations an 'income stream' unless it was for a site like wiki or other well known, high traffic site that is ad free.

It is your site so your decision. Let us know how it works for you. What reason will you give for requesting donations?

This is what I use after each post.

"Thousands turn to Strike 7 Sports' well-researched, accessible, and approachable explanatory content to understand a chaotic world in leagues such as the NFL, NBA, and much more to gain clarity on how to act. We're committed to keeping our work accessible. Financial contributions from readers help us do that and hold us accountable to you, our readers. Please support our mission, and help keep Strike 7 Sports free for all by making a financial gift today.'

It's either that or go the paid subscription model.

Go the paid subscription route. You'd have a better chance at creating recurring payments/continuity in your site.

There's no guarantee that AdSense, affiliate products, or selling ad space would generate recurring payments.

But in my mind a paid subscription model is more predictable, especially if they love your content and you offer more than just news.
