Ever Tried To Keep Track Of How Much Time You Waste Online?

So I decided to do this experiment today...I opened Online Stopwatch and started timing my activities.

After about a few minutes or so...I completely forgot about the clock...I got involved in checking email, going to forums reading posts, reading articles etc etc...And then I suddenly realized...I have that watch going.

I was shocked to see that it had been 2 hours or so...And I had not done even one thing which I would term productive...And yes as a lot of you might say here...Posting this thread is one of them.

If I was to time my whole day this way...I am certain that I only spend about 20% of my time doing the things which truly take me closer to my goal and the rest 80% gets wasted.

Do you guys track your daily activities as well? Comments?

I will NOT try to keep track of how much time I waste online. The mere suggestion of knowing is far too terrifying for me to even contemplate.

I give my self half-days (hey today is one) where I allow myself to drift wherever I fancy - I find it very therapeutic.

Yes, I probably waste about 3-4 hours just gazing online and switching from one unproductive task to another. It's hard to stay focused.

I don`t waste any time. I am sure I don`t. I have my tasks list for every week, every day, and sometimes - every hour. My time is planned very well I think, and if I want to "waste" some time (just do whatever I like, browse something, etc), I also plan it.

I used to attend a course by Goldratt - it was called (sorry not sure if I remember correctly) "GTD: Getting Things Done".

      Man, I learned a lot!

Likewise... With so many things to check online, I don't think I can stay focused on doing something productive.

Replying to threads about keeping track of wasted time is a waste of time.

There is quite a bit of time spent learning on the internet. Sometimes it seems like a waste of time but, in the end, you find something or some one that you didn't know and it helps you succeed.

      And reading those replies is...

      [Whoops, shiny object]

      a bigger waste of time.

Kind of like pointing a video camera at a tv monitor...

I would rather waste time than do something productive. At least my brain would and it wins more than not.

I think its human nature to pick the pleasant thing or fun thing to do rather than the mountain of tasks we see before us that are boring. Our brain tricks us into thinking we are getting things done by reading the latest posts. We tell ourselves we are learning.

In order not to waste time in my efforts to keep track of the time I waste, I use RescueTime (the free version).
It's fully automatic and works very well after a bit of configuring.
    Results can shock, however.

Only problem: RescueTime can't distinguish between me doing actual, important work and me just mucking about in Thunderbird and Excel and doing relatively irrelevant stuff.

I contend that when I spent a couple hours last night on Youtube watching videos like old rap (think Ice Cube, NWA, The D.O.C.) and funny @#$% like The Lonely Island guys (I'm Da Boss, I'm On A Boat, etc.) that it wasn't wasted time. After all, all work and no play makes Rod a very dull human being...........

Btw, I've tracked my online activities before, but then decided it was more effective for me to create a plan with specific objectives and time lines and use that as my benchmark. Works a whole lot better. Throw in some home-brewed coffee and some martinis later in the evening.........

I spent 1-2 hours of wasting my time on the internet before I seriously work. It keeps me awake.
