Two pages ranking for same keyword

Hi,

I have taken over the SEO work on a friend of mines website after they were paying someone for years with no results.

PROBLEM: They have ranked the wrong service page for their main keyword, although it's not that simple, its position is no.19 and the correct service page is just belong the wrong one on the search results, but it is stepped in from the left.

I have had experience with one of my sites before and keyword cannibalization, but my experience was different, my correct page was no.4 at the time and my about us page was ranking on page 5 and therefore the correct page was ranking one day then disappearing for a few days, the problem was obvious to me, I deoptimized the about us page and this problem went away.

I'm not sure what the issue I mentioned at the top under PROBLEM is, Is it keyword cannibalization?

Has anyone had this same issue? Should I deoptimize the correct service page that is sitting under the wrong page in the rankings, and change the content on the one that is actually ranking to optimize for the main keyword?

I'm not confident in deoptimizing the wrong page as I don't want them top lose their rankings,

Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

What do you have against making money? I mean, 2 of your pages at the top of the results makes you more money. Really.

Yes, you want the about us page to come after the other page. So, convince Google that your service page is a better match for the keyword query than your about us page.

Can be done with onpage with offpage, with a combo.

Your problem is that you're not at the top of the results. Work on getting your service page there and don't worry if the about page shows up in the serps too.

Do not depotimize. Do the opposite. Get the service page up, optimize it better.

Thanks for you response, Please note, the about us was my issue, this is under PROBLEM: for this site two service pages are ranking, but not in different spots, just one below is and to the right. the wrong page is the one that sits above and the correct page sits under and to the right, so the wrong page is the one ranking, im not sure weather to just optimize the wrong page as google likes it, or try and optimized the correct page and see if it takes over.

Hey, good question, I think I may have the answer.

It is likely that if the incorrect page is ranking for that keyword there is a lot of content and backlinks leading to that page's direct URL. Head over to a free backlink checker, enter your domain, and gather all the backlinks that lead to that page. This is gonna suck, but then what you want to do is contact all those directories or companies to which your page was linked or mentioned, and ask them to switch it to the correct page. Hope I helped!

There's no one definitive answer to this question, as it can depend on a variety of factors. However, some general things to consider include:

-Which page is ranking higher? If the higher-ranking page is the one you want to keep, then you may need to adjust your optimization strategy for the other page.

-Are both pages addressing the same topic? If not, you may be inadvertently cannibalizing your traffic by having two pages competing for the same keywords.

-What kind of content is on each page? If one page is largely composed of short, keyword-focused text while the other includes longer articles and detailed information, it's likely that the first page will rank higher. In this case, you may need to reconsider your content strategy in order to avoid cannibalization.

I am goinig to throw in some assumptions here - please let me know if I am correct or not.

#1 You are searching a company name

#2 The About Us page is ranking in the SERP listing

#3 Down and to the right based on say desktop view ( google search ) would suggest you have a business profile being displayed and I am guessing the link is to your homepage.

If all of these are true... what exactly is wrong with this scenario? other than the fact you should have a facebook profile and other pages from your site in the Serp listing as well?

Just the thought of tanking a high ranking serp listing because you would prefer one page to list higher than the other is just short of absurd.

Be THANKFUL you have 2 links on a page... and start adding additional content to get 3 and 4 and 6 pages of content in the serps.

the term "Keyword Cannibalization" is absolutely crazy... I call it keyword capitalization.

Especially on business pages, the "About Us" page is probably the most important page on your entire site. In my book, you have done everything right to have that come up first.

    Dont believe me? ( https://www.shopify.com/blog/how-to-...-about-us-page ) or ( https://www.bigcommerce.com/ecommerc...about-us-page/ ) or ( https://getuplift.co/optimize-about-us-page/ )

The about us page is the one and only page that actually begins to build TRUST, and the seed to a relationship with a potential customer / client... you can pitch and sell all you want, but if they dont TRUST you and your site - they wont buy.

Turn what you think is a negative into a positive... Craft a Trust building - conversion creating About Us page - and dont screw it up and lose rank! ( haha )

First you can set the redirection that wrong page to expected page, and remove all promotional activities in social media portals then re-index expected page in all the search engines
